Almost 16 years ago, A Tribe Called Quest released its fifth album, The Love Movement. A Top 3 debut, the album arrived to the public following word from the group that it would be their last. In addition to frustrations with the act’s lifelong label, Jive Records, Q-Tip publicly spoke about a growing creative rift between him and Phife Dawg—which was later chronicled in documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life. That September, 1998 LP would earn a gold plaque, though never to be followed up.

In the time that has passed, Jive Records was absorbed by Epic Records, each A.T.C.Q. member released solo and side albums. Founding member Jarobi also would reunite with his band-mates on a number of tours and public appearances. Nothing more significant would transpire, however, than the March 22 death of Phife Dawg.

Unknown to the public, before Phife’s death from kidney failure, he, Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi had recorded a sixth album as A Tribe Called Quest.

Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid confirmed the album’s existence in a conversation with the Rap Radar Podcast. At the 14:00 mark, when asked about the status of OutKast, Reid shifted the discussion to another Hip-Hop group thought to be permanently on hiatus. “You know what I’m excited about though? A Tribe Called Quest. has A Tribe Called Quest album coming.” Asked if the release is a compilation of unused material, L.A. clarified, “It’s an album that recorded before Phife passed away. I’m really happy about it, man. It’s really something special. It’s one of the things I’m most excited about out of everything we’re working on.”

While Reid was not at Jive during the 1990s, Epic now is responsible for that label’s artists. The high-profile executive touched upon his close bond with Q-Tip. When Reid was CEO at Arista Records in 2000, Q-Tip was a label star, thanks to his 1999 gold-certified solo debut, Amplified.

“ a long relationship. Q-Tip’s a real friend, man. We didn’t hang out, take pictures, and act Hollywood, but he’s a friend. He’s made some incredible music and I love it.” As far as Tribe’s yet-to-be-titled next album, L.A. Reid confirmed complete participation. “Phife is there —the whole group: Jarobi, the entire group, everybody. It’s great too.” Reid promised that this album would not become another tease without delivery. “It’s coming very soon, it’ll be first album in 18 years.”

LA Reid sounded pretty confident and did say "their first album in 18 years" and it's "coming very soon". The Love Movement was released in 1998. 98 + 18 years = 2016.
Could be happening.

Statik Selektah indicated he knew of the project and has heard stuff from it.

I'm curious if this will be a lot of te stuff Tip was gonna use for The Last Zulu re-worked or maybe even left as is, and placed under the Tribe banner? Obviously Reid said all members are on it, but if we remember, Tip said a few years ago he wanted to get te Tribe dudes on his solo album. I'm thinking it just transformed into a quasi-Tribe project and maybe it was excelerated after Phife's passing.

I am a big Tribe fan. They are my favorite rap act and one of my favorite groups across genres.

But unless it has the blessings of the remaining members and the album was done pretty much before his death, I don't want to hear any new posthumous work from them.

No Biggie Duets.

No countless 2Pac albums.

I would buy a collection of remixes and unreleased songs, but Tribe will always be the collection of the original members during the time they physically recorded together. Anything else is wack.

Post me some recent content where the members said something about recording new music. Phife did interviews before he died. I know he was working on an EP. Don't recall him mentioning Tribe back in the studio.

... it seemed that the album wasn't completed before Phife died.

It doesn't make sense that the group would record an album and not release it, unless it wasn't finished or it wasn't very good.

Either way, I'd rather stick with the older stuff and hold on to the nostalgia than listen to songs which are spliced together or aren't up to their standard of quality.

with everyone in the studio. nothing about it not being finished. it's highly likely that it would have come out, but with Phife getting ill and then passing, it has been postponed.

Like you said, Phife's passing likely caused some type of delay with the marketing and release of the album. But the the words 'working on', which Reid said, made me think that either the album wasn't fine tuned or that the marketing and other parts to get the album ready to be released are incomplete and still being reviewed.

If the album wasn't finished or Tip and Shaheed weren't prepared to release the recordings I feel odd listening in to something that weren't intended to be listened to by the public. I almost get that feeling where I'm rubbernecking at a bad accident. That I'm seeing something that is just to be experienced by close family and friends.

to pursue this story a bit further and get some follow-up comments? I thought for sure after the podcast dropped and the story got out that there would be more information being dug up. But the weekend passes and it's late Monday and nothing but the regurgitated story from Friday. Damn, can someone get one the phone to Tip, Ali, Jarobi, LA Reid or someone else in the know and get some more info?

A project like this automatically gets ton of press and people were clearly asked to stay quiet about it until now so I can't imagine you're not going to be hearing about it EVERYWHERE when the real promotion begins

Although he doesn't mention any new Tribe stuff, he references November's Fallon performance as something special that brought the group back together as a crew. There have been mentions that January was an original release time for Tribe stuff, so I'm even more curious now what the time between Nov 14th and January entailed with regards to the Tribe.

Good podcast too, Jarobi seems like a cool dude.

I know the album is real....but is it an album the group is truly proud of?

I think if this was a project to be proud of, one of the Tribe members (Q-tip/Ali) would've broke the news.

By L.A. Reid saying this, it's just a corporate capitalist trying to hype up and get as much out of a golden era group. With the loss of Phife, sales will be up just for nostalgic reasons. There is money there so they know they can get something substantial out of one last project.

Hopefully I am wrong and it is classic. Well, I know for sure there should be a few dope cuts.

Regardless, the album is getting my money.

This interview took place around the 25th anniversary release of their debut album. It's about 5 months tops between when the interview was done and his passing. How much could he have done in that time because it doesn't sound like they were working on music prior to this interview.

Jason Newman: Two years ago, Q-Tip said that Tribe's opening slot for Kanye West would be the group's last shows. Did you agree with that decision?

Phife Dawg: I don't agree with it, but it is what it is. We haven't performed together since then.

Jason Newman: Would you be open to more performances with the group?

Phife Dawg: Absolutely. I think it is ludicrous that we are not performing together.

Jason Newman: In 2015, where is the group at mentally?

Phife Dawg: Tribe is no longer a group, first off. So once Q-Tip made the announcement that those were the last two shows, that was pretty much it, for real.

Jason Newman: What do you think is the main impediment Tribe Called Quest isn't a group anymore?

Phife Dawg: (Long pause) I can't really talk about it, to be honest. Because when I talk, my mouth gets me in trouble. I'm the type of dude that tries to keep it 100 and I always get in trouble for it. But I will say: it's dumb, and I don't agree with it and we're doing the fans a great injustice by not getting together and rocking, and that's all I can really speak on as far as that goes.

Jason Newman: In a more general sense, if other members were open to going into the studio and recording a new album, would you consider that?

Phife Dawg: I don't know. I don't know because if we can't get together and do shows, it's going to be even more difficult going into the studio and recording an album. Think about it: The shows that we do are 60 minutes of your day for whatever amount of money. It's just 60 minutes of your day and then you go on with your life, so forth and so on. I don't see nothing wrong with doing 15 shows a year for a good amount of money. Sixty minutes of your day and you keep it moving. We all have families.
But at the same time, on the flip side of that, I believe in consistency. If we're not a group, we're not a group. If we are, we are. Let's get this money. If we're not, then let's not even tease the fans. None of that craziness.

Well um, I'll still go with the consensus (...15/Statik/etc.) that it was done in time before the passing. If that's what there are saying then I'll go with it.

Apart of me though.......ahh, fuck it.....still copping regardless.

In the end, I'm likely going to buy the album, mostly because of the testimonials by ?uest and some other folks.

But it's interesting that he didn't bring up the album in ANY way. That last response was really telling in that Phife felt that the group didn't have the motivation to spend an extended amount of time recording an album.

Given the history of the group, Phife could have meant that the group had other commitments and didn't have time to spend recording or they didn't want to record with one another because of the dysfunction of the band.

Either way, unless the group had a standing policy of simply avoiding talking about the album, it's seeming more and more that the album Reid is talking about is an album that was rushed or maybe pieced together over time.

The chances of the album living up to the anticipation are as high as the level of commitment of Tip, Shaheed, and Jarobi to release something that they know the fans of the group are going to revere as much as the earlier four (or three albums).

It wouldn't keep in the spirit of Tip's obsessive nature and great talent to release something that was subpar. And I'm sure that whatever issues Tip and Phife had, that they viewed each other as brothers, estranged brothers, but still as brothers. Tip may be callous, but I don't think he would pull the other two into some ploy to bring Phife down at the expense of the group's legacy.

histories. Tip ain't getting pushed around to release Tribe shit. Tip, the one who least wanted to do Tribe related stuff after the breakup(s) is highly unlikely to be someone trying to release an album with the Tribe name that doesn't have his and the other member's approval. These guys aren't gonna get pushed around to record stuff or put the Tribe name on anything they don't want to. It's obvious. They could easily launch a social media campaign and shame the shit out of Epic and Reid if they didn't want this to happen.

If a new album comes out with that ATCQ name, there is seemingly no way the members aren't on board. These guys aren't 19 years old signed to a record contract and being pressured into things. They are seasoned veterans of the world and the music game.

Damn, we really need more info from this in the know so these things can be cleared up. Can someone send a tweet to Jarobi or whoever and get some feedback? Lol.

If he was working on some off the wall singing stuff or whatever, I could see the timeline not making much sense. But if he was already on his OG hip hop shit, it's not a stretch to think Phife adds his verses to say 5-7 tracks and Jarobi kicks a rhyme or 2 on some stuff. Judging by Nutshell, Phife was on his game towards the end and could bring energy to a track.

I am kinda going nuts waiting for more info on this.

I'm buying regardless. I just want to hear the fellas speak on it.

But how is Phife adding on a few verses to a Tip Solo count as a Tribe album?

I certainly hope that's not what this is.

And re-working some of the material Tip had slated for The Last Zulu doesn't necessarily mean verses would be tacked on. If it's already a Tribe vibe as Tip had previously described it, what's to say Phife couldn't lock in on that and add on to a bunch of stuff to make it more "Tribe" than solo Tip?

Look, I get its a new possibility and info is scarce, but I'm just trying to connect some dots to give myself hope. And to be honest, I'm not at all bothered if Phife is only on say half the tracks and the rest is Tip alone or adding some Jarobi in. The last 2 Tribe albums were made by all of them but Phife and Tip couldn't stand each other. If you offer me a new Tribe album now with the blessings of all members that came from a positive atmosphere between them after all these years, I'm taking that album and running away happy as a pig in shit. New Tip verses and beats? New Phife verses? Possibly new Ali beats? A few Jarobi rhymes? Dopeness.

Again, my assumption about how the album could have been kickstarted by using some of Tip's solo stuff that hasn't been completed/released or other stuff he has worked on, could be way off. Just made sense to me.

I wanna state that my intention isn't to be argumentative, but I'm approaching this from a much more "glass half full" angle than most of you seem to be using.

Plus, Bottomline, if it's dope shit that gives me that feeling even if it's only in spots.....after all these years and thinking they'd never do anything together again...I'm just gonna sit back and soak it all in as a fan.

for you? Help me understand that. Unless the actual rhyme for rhyme ratio of the original albums is met and maintained, it ain't Tribe? Did Consequence make the them not Tribe anymore? (Maybe it did for some, but I don't hear many people disregarding BR&L completely because he was on it).
Jarobi had rhymes for the early shit that got scrapped because he decided to do the culinary thing. But he has shown on Evitan he can rhyme alright and he is about as Tribe as it comes, especially as he's been described as the "Heart and Soul" of ATCQ by Q-Tip himself.

And I am grasping at whatever *sensible* info or inferences I can. I really want this to happen, it's a big deal.

It kinda did fuck up the Tribe vibe because we didn't know who this lil nigga was. Plus he wasn't dope back then. I wouldn't mind Jarobi spitting some bars though because I know how important he was to the group.

Quest seems pretty enthused/behind the project and NONE of the surviving members have released statements.

beyond the initial report and the 3 artist responses we've seen. It's crazy. Been total silence. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

... I just hope it isn't a project that was to fulfill contractual obligations and that it's real and it's released as it was intended to.
