You know that assumption makes you dumb as fuck right?

And last time I checked, there are plenty of legends still alive who are better than Kendrick.

Dude did not say "best rapper today" he said "best rapper alive".

That would mean other than Big, Pac, Pun, L, Guru etc, Kendrick is the best to ever do it which is NOT the case.

it's a euphemism coined at least a decade ago, it doesn't suddenly mean Kendrick Lamar has eclipsed KRS-ONE.

Now that we're past that, who is the best rapper 'right today'(c)WC in your eyes?

Would you agree even if he ain't your guy that Kendrick has been building a pretty strong case since 2011 or so up thru now?

The point of my response is that the euphemism is bullshit and doesn't make sense.

Nas is sti easily a better rapper than Kendrick 'right today' and its not even close. Shall I name more?

I like Kendrick. This whole "best rapper alive" only means "hottest rapper in the game who has a song on the radio".

That's what I'm calling bullshit.

Nas is in a bit of a renaissance, he's an all-time great but nah, artistically he's not better than Kendrick right now to me.

So sure, name more if you like, I'll respectfully disagree on the first nomination & see if the next one sways me.

dawg we're too old to get mad over this bullshit & I don't think any of the three of us are listening to FM Clear Channel hip-hop.

The point was Kendrick has been coming into his own, put out probably the best album of last year & by his own bars here is pretty much challenging anyone to get on his level (while like a good kid who loves hip-hop giving a quick pass list of five established legends he grew up idolizing).

That's hip-hop. That ain't about a song on the radio.

Truth be told he hasn't really had any big radio hits. He's getting props because he actually pulled off a concept album as a young buck in 2012 & has been coming from all different angles on outside work with a degree of integrity & care for what he's doing as an artist.

I think his biggest actual 'radio hit' was the ASAP 'Fuckin Problem' song which isn't really even associated with him all that much.

I'm surprise to hear you slighting Kendrick, Anonymous. While I totally agree the "Best Rapper Alive" tag name is absurd (especially while Rakim walks this earth) I think its fair to say that Kendrick is taking this music to a level few others are venturing towards.

Nas proved he can still put out strong material, but Bombastic hit it on the head, Nas is like a renaissance artist. He's my favorite of all time, but at this point, you know what you're going to get from him. TO me the reason Kendrick is so refreshing, is that he's finally a young dude that is making fresh music but can actually rhyme. ANd I don't mean rhyme like "he's a dope MC," I mean he's digging deep and coming from a different angle.

I think that album is far from overrated, in fact, I think its somewhat of an anomaly, dare I say, masterpiece. Go back and really listen. There is vivid story telling from various points of view and characters, but more than that, there is actually the rarest thing which we seldom here in Hip-Hop being expressed throughout, and that is, vulnerability. He's talking about growing up and seeing things on the street, in his family etc. much like we've heard throughout rap history, but he talks from the eyes of a kid going to school etc. Its refreshing. I've heard all these young kids say so and so was the next new rapper etc. etc. and I always looked at them bafflingly. Kendrick is finally that dude doing something new and different, but at the same time carrying the flag of tradition int the best way.

Nas hasn't dropped any notable verses in some time. What are you basing that on, his "Maybach Curtains" verse?

When people say 'best rapper right now', they usually mean 'the rapper who has been rapping the best for the past year'. From August 2012 to August 2013, on a major label, that's Kendrick.

And I love how everyone is acting like my initial reply wasn't in response to dude saying "best rapper ALIVE"

Which was basically just pointing out how cliche and incorrectly used that phrase is.

I'm 30 years old bruh. I'm not some youngin'. I know all about the great records that you do. I wasn't suggesting Kendrick's career is better than KRS', for example.

I was saying that right now, there is no body in rap music better than Kendrick Lamar. If you disagree, cool. It's an opinion not a fact.

The term was defined clearly in context of this convo and you still brought up Nas like he's been doing anything other than sending checks to Kelis recently. I gave him credit for the Maybach Curtains verse, if you've got some other sterling 2013 Nas verses to point out that I slept on, by all means, bring em out, bring em out (c) Big.

I definitely think Nas' verse on "Hip Hop" with Scarface and the "Let Nas Down" remix are better than Kendrick's.

Nas' verse on the Cole remix was too sleepy to f--k with the passion of K Dot's Control verse. There are also no standout lines in there at all, compare that to Kendrick's closing on Control about the rapper's drunk grandpa trying to fly a plane, that shit was nuts (big up to Nas listing Extra P as his mentor, though)

Nas' flow on Hip-Hop was awful and some of those metaphors were worse (licking on her Worldstar? blech). And the song's whole concept is a weaker retread of Com's Used To Love Her.

I knew you would nitpick about the date. I agree that Kendrick had more passion in his verse than Let Nas Down but that's only because that song didn't call for passion. Although very different songs with very different goals I still say Nas' bars are better and I think there a lot of stand out lines, the whole beginning for instance:

"I ain't mad at ya young king,
this unsung song is haunting,
along comes a one son called the offspring,
the earth spins,
my old earth grin,
sung a church hymn,
she birthed in September,
took my first wind, again,
the earth spins"

The poetry there trumps anything in K-dot's verse. I thought the grandpa thing was kind of corny. Not saying Kendrick's verse wasn't nice, he just ain't seeing Nas.

Other great parts/lines of that song in my opinion are:

"We was trying to be the Queensbridge Cosby's,
but the street life robbed me of that,
so I had to put it in raps,
and who could I ask for help,
older ni**as was gettin mad,
but that's the gift and the curse,
that's the good and the bad"

"..that's some advice I never got,
If I don't sell another record I just steady rock,
while you was writing down my rhymes I was just trying to show you that if you say what's in your mind,
you can stand the test of time"

That whole song is dope, the only track this year that I listened to like 5 or 6 times in a row when first hearing it. Hopefully Kendrick will get me to do the same when he's 20 years deep in the game.

Not dismissive at all. The statement is as bullshit as MTVs hottest rappers in the game being past off as the best rappers in the game. Only reason people are catching feeling is because I replied with my statement in regards to their favorite current rapper Kendrick. If he said that about Big Sean and I made the same statement you wouldve shut the fuck up like you should've.

I can list 25+ Nas verses in that time frame better than anything Kendrick has spit.

And again, I like Kendrick.

might as well type 'em out too, so we can pretend that rap is lyrics on a page rather than a unique musical artform/sport in which the great MC's engage.

can we also disregard the inherent musicality & melodic ability that Kendrick uses to create mood compared to Nas' tone-deaf attempts that have detracted from just about any song he's implemented it on?

well, besides 'Doo Rags', where his off-key sing-songey style sorta fits the childlike wonder he lays out in the verses. I'm sure there's a couple others somewhere over the past couple decades but uh, yeah.

Do we think it's an accident that Nas' two best albums of the past ten years or more came because he finally is secure enough & had the good sense to let others do the heavy lifting for him in terms of songcraft so that he can focus on what he does best (spit) like in the early part of his career?

I certainly don't.

So let me get this straight. YOU made a statement of how Rakim doesn't have a verse better than the 10 best Kendrick verses and then when that statement is met with an artist who does in fact have many verses better, you backtrack on the concept of your initial statement? That's how we're playing? Ok. Take your ball and go home.

Me and Bomb still waiting for you to post THOSE TWENTY FIVE VERSES better than Kendricks best. And the other 4-10 rappers or albums better than Kendricks/GKMC in the last 2yrs.

Let your mad die down before you post tho

Either way my point remains.

I don't need to list any verses. Nas is a flat out better MC and I can't believe we are even having this discussion like he's not.

Bottom line, I felt like splitting hairs. Period.

You want to say Kendrick is the best new jack...cool.

But the fact that people took my splitting hairs and turned it into this disaster of a thread shows who's really emotional over this shit.

Calm down my man.

You and everyone else feels like licking sweat from Kendrick's balls.

It's all good.

Musical discussion begin:

There are 3 reasons why this verse is getting attention and Kendrick isn't the first to use these methods or benefit from these methods.

1 The verse is 2+ minutes

2 He claims he's the king of something

3 He names names

Those three things are resulting in this reaction. Always have and always will. The verse itself is decent at best and has some questionable lines.

Love his energy.

Hate his voice.

Love his confidence.

Hate parts of his delivery.

Not to mention Big Sean throws a subliminal at himself and Kendrick in the very song they're on.

The lines about running to get the hottest rapper which is what Big Sean can be found guilty of by getting Kendrick and then he mentions how people "name drop" which is what Kendrick does.

I actually don't have an issue with the NY line because he's claiming he's a lot of things he actually isn't alongside that line and it really is just a confident line and that's what hip-hop is. At the same time he does name Jay and Nas as two MCs that can fuck with him so its somewhat voids the claim. And at the end of the day Jay AND Nas run NY period and always will.

The names he named aren't even really good MCs to be honest. I know he says "anyone" but lookin at who he actually called out, they're only the hot MCs right now so that's not a very good bragging point to claim you're better than them.

And lastly, it never fail for an MC to get on a song and spit a long verse and get the "one of the greatest ever" reactions. Cappa may be the first that did this and then of course Canibus was infamous for doing this. And that's not to say those verses aren't great but a long verse doesn't automatically make the verse one of the best ever. People who have no basis to evaluate the quality of hip-hop and lyrics use that ignorant method.

Honestly, the verse is cool. Nothing to the level the crazy people in this post are making it out to be and I am fully confident that if Jay Elec knew what was on the table he would've smashed that shit for real.

As far as the Nas comments, no one is better when the dude is on. And to act like be hasn't been on the past few years is just not true. Starting from that Victory verse the guy has been on a tear.

He killed Distant Relatives
He killed these guest spots that he popped up on
He killed tracks like Nasty, The Don, Loco-Motive
He killed tracks that are not that good like Reach Out and the third verse of Worlds An Addiction
He killed Stay
2nd verse on Where's The Love is absurd
Let Nas Down remix is dope
The Black Bond is only shit Nas will and can do

I'm not going to write these verses down but the point is, Nas at his best is simply better than everyone else and he has been killing everything recently.

But he would never be an MC that I would be cautious in battling.

That list he spit out is really evident of how sad rap as become.

And then we have people in here talking like "Kendrick is the best". We have a whole separate post asking "who can fuck with Kendrick".

As if he would want any parts of someone like Black Thought.

And then when you mention a real MC they side step it by sayin "yea but he isn't relevant" based on the fact they don't play his song 5 times and hour on Hot Bullshit Whatever the Station is in your City.

This whole game is ridiculous. And I'm sure people will reply to me saying "you're mad" but that only further proves how ignorant this music discussion has gotten.

like yeah, that list is an oddly rounded representation of the "new school rappers" and if someone did the same type of shit in the 80s or 90s of course it would've been A LOT BETTER.

but I'm still happy with hip hop really, I just stick to what I like and every year I get more of what I like

I don't think any of these new dudes (who are popular) could fuck with Kendrick in a battle to be honest.

I also think Black Thought could take him on/win but this isn't his battle to fight. Plus lets be honest we all know even if Thought did win lyrically the general consensus in the media would be that he didn't, just because of Kendrick's popularity

I am a HUGE Kendrick fan by the way.

I probably agree with that because I like Kendrick but I still rate ALL MCs on the same scale. I'm not giving dudes a pass because they're from the new school. I don't want to hear "of course Nas and Thought are better but Kendrick is battling his class of new jacks" because the reality is, if Kendrick and anyone of these bat shit crazy people in this post want to label him as the "best alive" then he has to match up to the fucking best alive. Which he can't and even admits in the very verse he's claiming to be the best which is fucking stupid in my opinion. How are you going to have a verse about how you're the best and I the verse be like "Jay, Nas, Dre, and Em I'm not talking to you because you're clearly better."???

That's like me going to the park to play ball and only balling with the same dudes I know I'm better than, calling myself the best and then refusing to play with the real ballers.

Come on man...type of shit is that?

Like I said, Thought has nothing to do with this but if Kendrick wants to be labeled the best and challenge the *actual* nicest MCs in the game then he needs to man up and really name the nicest fucking MCs to ever do it.

>I am a HUGE Kendrick fan by the way.

Like I said, I like the dude and enjoyed his album but people, like always, are just extra extra with it. Just let Kendrick be Kendrick. Why do we have to go into "best rapper alive" mode all the time especially for a mediocre ass verse such as this.

I don't give passes either or think Kendrick is THE BEST NO QUESTIONS ASKED rapper alive. I think he is one of the best doing it right now, I also disagree with you on the verse, I think it was another dope Kendrick verse, but HE HAS HAD BETTER VERSES. Kendrick has two good projects and one really dope one. GKMC was my favorite rap album of last year and my second favorite album of the year, I even liked it more than El-P's/Killer Mike's albums and I am a HUGE El-P fan. I also liked it more than Life Is Good (which came in right behind the other two releases I mentioned) and Nas is my favorite MC OF ALL TIME. Number one. Seriously.

People are just flipping out now because of the name dropping we BOTH know this. Kendrick on this track pretty much was like "I'm trying to be the best" or "I'm the best" on some hip hop shit, which as sad as it sounds (and this is sad to me, believe me), in the mainstream, that is a huge fucking deal because no one really does that anymore. Another factor is the delivery of the verse, dude sounds hungry as shit. He also said he was the KONY and dude is from Cali so its pretty easy to see why people are flipping out over this verse IMO. When was the last time the general public reacted to a verse like this? I honestly have no idea. Have there been BETTER verses RECENTLY.....YES, but this verse, although it is DOPE, brought the names, which brought that SHOCK VALUE. No one was expecting Kendrick to do that.

I actually liked many albums better than Kendrick's. Kendrick's was cool but I never go back to it because I can only take so much of him. Also, I think yet again, the hip-hop fan over-reacted to the concept over the actual music. I like Life Is Good, Trophies, Mourning in America and Dreaming In Color, Ka, Killer Mike, El-P, Skelethon and a few others more than Kendrick. He'd probably just make my Top 10 of last year. I also agree that he is the best new jack out of all of those people he named in the song.

>to see why people are flipping out over this verse IMO. When
>was the last time the general public reacted to a verse like
>this? I honestly have no idea. Have there been BETTER verses
>RECENTLY.....YES, but this verse, although it is DOPE, brought
>the names, which brought that SHOCK VALUE. No one was
>expecting Kendrick to do that.
>

This is what I said above (which Bomb and others have yet to refute because they can't) and that is that the verse's appeal comes largely from the length, the name dropping, and the KoNY line. But I can't rock with that at all because claiming the verse is great because of those three things is ridiculous. Shock value hold NO weight with me and usually cheapens the quality of music for me.

To use Nas again as an example, verses of his like the 2nd verse on Where's The Love are just head and shoulders above a verse like Kendrick's. The delivery, the rhyme pattern, the phrasing, the lyrics, the imagery, the subtle details. it's not even remotely close in my opinion.

And that's why I hate shit like this because the verse is cool until these insane people come on here and start with the "greatest verse of all-time" and "August 13, 2013 - a turning point in hip-hop history".

Really? Do you know how fucking stupid they sound with that shit.

Nah man...I'm not listening to that bullshit for a minute.

is the best thing going right now is some ridiculous 'hip-hop' violation makes you sound silly.

If anybody's got a pretty valid argument, he's certainly one of them.

But just outta curiosity, who is the best rapper doing it over the past year or so?

Three straight projects that bodied just about everything else out in rap music at the time.

Before GKMC, people could say "well, he's on some underground shit, it ain't like he's 'relevant' or making hits", but when the album was a smash, it was a wrap.

Seen it a few times recently here & in GD, motherfuckas just programmed to pounce & usually over dumb shit.

Let's be clear: that woman is the Queen of this damn site since the day angiee dipped & deserves respect if she ain't shown disrespect towards one of y'all first.

She doesn't need my help even a little but felt compelled to state my position on the matter.

But back to the topic at hand: trying to act like one line can ruin a whole damn verse as raw as this is silly & misses the point while joylessly attempting in vain to throw shade on a musical moment.

Is every line of Bun B's verse on 'Murder' a winner? Naw but I bet that shit made a lotta dudes who hadn't before take notice.

'Discombumberate' ain't even a damn word but it doesn't matter, Cappadonna still stole the show submitting one of the best verses of the whole pre-Forever Wu-solo prime era.

Chickity-Choco-The-Chocolate-Chicken-This-Shit-Was-Silly-But-A-Star-Was-Born-Once-This-Verse-Was-Kickin!

Dig Me?

Some legendary verses are ones that probably do look dope on a printed page (Ra's second verse on 'The Ghetto') like it was a piece of poetry.

Others get into the conversation off energy/verbal-acrobatics (Pun's 'Twinz' verse with the 'dead-in-the-middle-of-Little-Italy bit' or in an Okayplayery example Elzhi on 'Motown 25').

Still some more get there for the context in which it came (Pac on 'Hit Em Up', Kid Hood on Scenario Remix, Superb on Ghost Dieni) or impact (Em on Renegade, Dirt on Fantasy).

This Kendrick blackout already notched at least a couple of those categories instantly with another still in play.

No single weak line you try to isolate & repeat like its a crime will be able to diminish the power of this rhyme.

If you don't get that, 'don't get involved'(c)K-Dot

Much like segregationalist governors in the 60's, smoking-permitted TWA commercial flights in the 70's, Hands Across America, Janine Garofallo's Fiona Apple VMA speech parody, Ken Starr's Clinton prosecution, Brady Anderson's 50-HR season, Y2K Technology Consultants, Laffy Taffy or anti-gay-marriage-crusaders throughout this new millennium........this verse's most dogged deniers/detractors will see support for their side eroding & treated derisively by history while some of us can be satisfied in knowing that THE BAR HAS BEEN RAISED as it happened in real-time.

Kendrick is the best new artist to break in some time. He is already probably in my top 20 or something.

Now, I don't expect everyone to like the same sh!t.

But if you like hip hop, especially the kind of hip hop that probably brought you to Okayplayer in the first place...

How do you not appreciate what he is doing??

And even if its not for you for whatever reason, how can some folks be so emotional over this??

In my mind a lot of folks are proving him to be 110% right.

He basically called the game out for being soft....

and then everyone got their pant!es in a bunch!!! Industry dudes and fans alike.

Posters I actually respect a lot saying stuff like "bu bu but what about nas?!?!?"

huh?

This is hip hop.

Its crazy.

now... the "parallel" u came up with about blown lines, using the Cappa line and the "chicatty choco...", that shit is apples to oranges man. can't remember if it was Dinco or Milo or Busta who said that, but they were just buggin out havin fun. they weren't tryin to come off as a lyrical surgeon or tryin to sound smart n shit lol.

this nigga talkin bout Farrakhan, bombs, and Sadaam in the same line and tryin to make u believe he's sayin some raw dog shit! smh/lol

foh, the shit was wack and corny, and u can't deny it. i call him out on that bullshit and u act like i got some malicious hate for KL. only thing i "hate" is the constant echo about this dude being the best.

KL is dope. often BEYOND dope. but sometimes (not ONE time) wack, with a voice, delivery and lyrical prowess that is sometimes a thing of beauty, and other times weak, nerdy and corny. that's just how i feel about dude.

almost every great rapper has a wack line here or there, but for me this is just further proof that the dude is not who u say he is, other than "the best thing going right now" :/

like O'Shea Jackson in '90.

He's feeling himself, that's for sure but really I think he's just trying to stir the pot & see if anybody up to the challenge.

And Jay Electronica........is not.

Goddamn, he shoulda stayed back in London with that rich broad he's scamming.

He hopped on there, not even really sounding recognizable vocally, drums all cut out so he can do his little a capella style verse & by the time the drums came back the song was over and no one cared.

Did he actually hear the rest of this record beforehand?

I mean, how you gonna get your name dropped in a song after a 3:30 of Kendrick dipping into like four different flows while essentially dropping a call to arms on all his peers then do....that.

I can't really remember anything he said beside 'Jay Electricity'.

Kendrick calling himself King of NY is sorta equivalent to what DMC was saying on Combat Jack this week, he was saying calling himself 'King Of Rap' really didn't have the same level of craziness/balls that 'King Of Rock' did. That was designed to make motherfuckers tight. I'm sure a few in that Live-Aid crowd were but damn if Run-DMC didn't destroy a stage in their 10-minute-allotted set way harder than that fucked-up Led Zep reunion did.

And I'll be damned if there's a rock act that's stronger than Kendrick right now.

you can keep all that 'do you got more hoes than him?' hoe shit you just spit because it means less than nothing from where I sit.

All in your feelings trying to come to his aid while actually applauding a fucking rapper for building a career off not rapping.

Talking about a 'great career' by a 40-year-old MC with less than 4 songs on iTunes.

That's like someone on the sports board trying to salute Jamarcus Russell's career because he got Al Davis to pay him 40 mill for sittin' fat down south, eating ribs & beating codeine cases.

Lean Back, Lil' Troy.

I don't care about a motherfucka's porfolio, I care about his performance.

LOL @ you telling me to cry about not being able to fuck Erykah Badu like as soon as you log off she's throwing that Sunshine pussy at you.

nah fam, i'm just recognizing that Jay has a great, successful life, and its a result of the music he's made, album or no album. why is this so hard to understand?

>Talking about a 'great career' by a 40-year-old MC with less

NOPE. more like if Jamarcus became a star by playing one or 2 games per season, put up 400yds passing on 25-30, 3TD, 0 int, and 90yds rushing, and STILL got his contract renewed every year. the fans might be mad, but JR would still be considered one of the best when he was on the field. now obviously there are huge differences between rap and football. durability and endurance count for a lot more in football (u can't get hurt in the fuckin studio). i'm just workin with the example u put out there.

u labeling JE's career as nonexistent is more bossip-blog-girl shit than anything. I never suggested that i was winning from any pussy or $ that man was gettin, i was just stating facts.
ur tryin to ridicule a man that in all likelihood has a much better career than you.

sean instantly forgettable. thanks for at least getting the other 2 on it

Kendrick told the rap game he's the one who knocks and then did the whole skydive/5 g5's/5grand/grandad/ section that was fucking ridiculous

and then Jay E. Went William Hurt in a History of Violence. little screen time, killed every second. rock/rock/rock/Roc and the Jay Electricity/PBS Mysteries/In a lofty place tanglin w/ satan over history.
I know this crazy nigga's gonna disappoint me. I don't care. He's so fuckin dope.

There were some parts where he was doin his thing on there, found his pocket, was ridin the beat nicely. But you're doing a song with two lyrical superheavyweights and wanna set it off with a 3 minute rhyme, and that's what ya come up with? C'mon!

Again...it's not about Sean's actual lyrics...It's his otherworldly corniness...It's his annoying voice....It's a lot of other things...And that's all glaring when he's rapping next to two MC's like Lamar and Electronica....

He;s not horrible....But, um, yeah...

When Sean did those tracks with Currency and Wiz I asked around for the version that editted out Sean. After some time I started liking his voice and flow now. Its unique and fun. He's one of my favorite rappers right now.

I just can't bring myself to care about this dude at all, I legitimately can't even stay in concentration for long-ass verses like this from him.

He was going almost as long as Kendrick yet it felt like Kendrick gobbled the whole turkey, gave Sean one drumstick on his own song & Jay Elec was tapping at the bottom of the cranberry sauce can waiting for the jellied cylinder to slide out.

The Yayo one was a banger even if the subject matter was tired.

I can't recall what else, also Alc's said he's got one they did for the album that they're saving but he thinks might be his biggest record since 'Keep It Thoro'.

Q is going to come with a 'singles/collection-of-bangers' type of album anyway, that's just more in line with his personality & he's sorta coming into his own with the melodic-hook-but-still-slightly-twisted approach to songwriting.

There was Yay-yay and I thought one more. I could be wrong though.

Q said in an interview that the album was partially about the history of the Crips. That Alc quote has me even more excited. I think this might be my most anticipated album for the rest of the year.

I kinda like Q for the opposite reasons I like Kendrick, he's more of an energy/flow/showboat type.

He's probably got a couple songs that say something to me but a lot of times even on songs I love (say, There He Go or Hands On The Wheel off the last one) I sorta have to tune out his content to get to the energy/rap-dexterity/songwriting aspects I enjoy.

I mean he's not an ASAP Rocky level of empty-flow/swagger-vessel, he at least spits in a way where I actually remember his words, but he ain't shown me Kendrick levels of depth & I'm not sure if that would work for him if he tried.

I think he's got the chance to deliver an incredible album coming up here (when is this shit actually supposed to drop?) but for almost altogether the opposite reasons that I thought Kendrick was pre-GKMC (and if you recall Q had sorta raised the stakes with Habits & Contradictions right before that, which I don't personally like more than Section.80 but it still went pretty hard & I couldn't get mad at someone for saying it's a toss-up).

That yin-and-yanging is feeding TDE right now. Jay Rock's killing features. They need to figure out how to bring Ab-Soul up to speed, I feel like he hasn't figured out who he is yet artistically.

Out of curiosity, what do you think are the 5 songs of his that best showcase him at this level?

this thread is about KL, so we gotta keep this in the paradigm of the new. i can't even mention him, let alone compare him, to the all time greats.

we'll just talk about a brotha that's WAY more consistently dope, illa than KL lyrically, and especially vocally and delivery wise. he just doesn't have the oratorical gifts that Young Badass possesses.

we can keep it simpler than that. all i gotta do is listen to the SK mixtape, then listen to GKMC and i can clearly see who is better.

Nah...U taken this topic much too seriously...Notice how I didn't call u any names or go HAM on you because of your opinion....Because after all, it's an opinion, right? But the irony is you pretty much did the same thing you r claiming that I just did....lol....U calling people out for even having the thought that Lamar is the best MC at the moment.....

U acting like people are saying 2 Chainz is the best doing it today....lol....Like dog, turn this shit down a little....

As Bomb said you don't think the kid is the best doing it TODAY, that's cool....

But who would you say is the best right now?

And baby dicks? really dog?....That's what's on your mind? Baby dicks?...lol

Like I said, too much, homie...

stop tryin to make this about everything but what i said. i called KL out on that bullshit, non-sensical line and u have nothing to say about it, other than some bullshit about i'm trying too hard.

u wanna focus on some extra verbage that i'm having fun with, that's your problem. i mean, u even tryin to dissect my "baby dicks" line (which is from Boondocks) lol. get a grip, homie.

and as i've said, Joey Bada$$ is a far superior emcee and makes better music than KL.

But let's just say it is.

Are you saying Nas never had a completely wack line?
Jay-Z?
All of the greats?

The fact that all you can focus on is 1 line out of 50 is sad and pathetic. Meanwhile I'll concentrate on all of them and appreciate it as a whole. You're just grasping for straws and nit picking, looking desperately for a reason to hate it. Enjoy (or don't enjoy rather).

*bumps track*

Don't get me wrong the song was cool.

But what's so great about it? A rapper telling his friends that he usually rhymes with that he wants to be better than them?

It's not as groundbreaking as people are making it out to be, and the rhymes really aren't that impressive. Not hating dude, I like him, and he's spit better.

In all honesty, he's lucky he was even mentioned there. I suspect it's because a) his album just dropped and b) he's fam with the whole TDE.

I put Hip Hop in quotes, because some seem to think it's ALL about
competition.

He showed old heads you don't have to be on bad terms to be openly
competitive.... and showed young heads you can be a non-hater and
be competitive, since this new generation is all about calling you a
hater if you don't like some shit.

This is kind of a revolutionary move on his part.

but to be honest, I don't think Kendrick really cares if it's a fall out, since he's on top of the rap world really, and he's flexin on niggas..

It remains to be seen if that will come back to bite him on the way down (Ah La 50 Cent)..

But the new school era of guys he called out aint necessarily the most menacing group of rappers ever either..at the most they'll just catch feelings and dont do songs with him no more..lol

I know that was the case even when GKMC dropped,
but to see this kind of reaction, from not just
hip hop heads, but all rap fans in general and the
whole industry, is an exciting and refreshing thing.

He's definitely got the game on lock and is "that dude"
right now, which couldn't be better for the future of hip hop.

he played the 48 Laws of Power Law #26 Enter all Actions with Boldness
to stimulate the rap game and bring some fresh attention on him and his projects, because of the buzz people are re-igniting his mixtapes and album, youtube videos are getting hits, his name is trending and the rap industry got a good shot of smelling salts...jolly good show indeed.

on the world that drew a line in the sand by emcee Kendrick Lamar and defined a new era in hip-hop music"..

Looking back 5-10 years from now thats how the hip-hop history books might read.

Technically it's not Kendrick's best verse, technically maybe not the best of the year..I've even heard opinions saying it's not even the best 'technical' verse on the SONG (some have said Jay Elect has that..)

But the proclamations made by KDot, and at the same time taking a true leadership role as Leader Of The New School in a competitive way..was as refreshing a verse as been heard in YEARS in hip-hop.

Not trying to argue, but you seriously believe that? If so that's disappointing as hell to me that hip-hop has gotten here.

"A new era in hip-hop music"? You mean an era where MC's say they want to be better than other MC's? Since when is that new? I realize the skinny jeans rap fans may not be used to hearing it, but it's never really went away.

He only told people he's cool with that he wants to kill them on songs. What's groundbreaking about that? Just that he named them? That loses all force when you're naming cats you're friends with.

The "line in the sand" you're referring to has already been drawn many times by others. Maybe it's refreshing to hear a current popular rapper mention it, but people need to stop acting like it's brand new or will be in history books.

And I don't think I had one prior.

Some hate his voice...cool. But if you hate his voice and love people like Q-tip, Sadat X, Grand Puba, Eminem..hypocrite much?

Some say the verse wasn't amazing...it wasn't. It was dope but the thing about it...it was meant to be BALLSY! Draw the line, with a verse of the quality 97% of these rappers couldn't conjure anyway, and challenge any and all to step up. Kendrick is capable of much more amazing ones so I don't think he's worried.

Jay Elec was dope but it was obvious they weren't all together at the same time when this was done. Maybe Jay was like "Ya'll want me to do a Big Sean song? Really? Fuck it, ok I'ma do my standard quality bars but I ain't excited about it AT ALL!" Obligatory Jay Z reference, Obligatory Jay Z reference, Obligatory Jay Z reference.

Only thing I took from Big Sean's verse (which it wasn't so bad, I was actually a little surprised): "I'm over niggas saying they the hottest nigga, then running to the hottest nigga just to stay hot."

LMAO @ the truth in that line and the irony of him getting a guy hotter than him on the song...so he can stay hot.

"Molly's prolly turn these nigga's to fuckin' Lindsay Lohan's/A bunch fuckin' white girls looking for parties"

What is competition? I'm trying to raise the bar high/
Who trying to jump and get it? You're better off trying to sky dive/
Out the exit window of 5 G 5's, with 5 grand/
With your granddad as the pilot, he drunk as fuck trying to land/
With a hand full of arthritis, and poppin' prosthetic leg/
Bumpin' Pac in the cockpit, so the shit that pops in his head/
is an option of violence, someone heard that the stewardess said/
that your parachute is a latex condom, hooked to a dread...

or whether you like Kendrick
or who 'wins' or 'loses'

the shit ruffled a lot of feathers apparently
so the real question is whether this gambit is gonna get us some dope songs?
are Krit and Mac and Pusha gonna give us the same shit or try something new?
Will these NY rappers actually finally figure out how to rap like the're from NY and not sound bland?

Yeah. When the rappers who were name dropped and the young NY rappers start dropping consecutive dope full projects including a conceptually based major label debut with songs that get play on the radio and the streets, then we can talk about game-changing.

For now, it's just a dope verse on a weak dude's song.

not the greatest, but it's hot. let it simmer for a while before it gets called great (R A Rugged Man's verse comes to mind, that thing shone on a mostly unheard album)

The last two Kendrick verses i've heard have been dope tho. that Tech N9ne Fragile and this. he's killin it.

I almost wanna say 'yolk' could go with being 'offspring' and then the Pac/New York connection could be one of those subtle dual-meaning/sounding things but admit that's a reach.

KL's NY line is no big deal...he just one-upped everyone in terms of "I'm the best".

That being said, it seems like most of his features on other people's shit are all about his newfound critical acclaim which is relevant but, ultimately boring. One of the things that was great about GKMC is that he captured the LA gang life so well. If I wanted to hear mediocre bragging, I could listen to Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Big Sean....He can rap, but he just sucks. Like Wayne, etc.

news right now???

kendrick is nasty, but fuck. rappers are having pillow fights to determine who's on top right now.. i'm supposed to be impressed that he's stating that he's the best out?? after "pardoning" dudes he's afraid of before even going at anyone else?? i don't want to hear some "oh, well, these guys are better than me and i promise i'm not going at them because they might actually tear me to shreds on the mic... but these other guys can't touch me, so i'm the best... oh, and did i mention that i love them all"... wtf.. mofos are oooh'ing and ahhhh'ing over that???

and then on top of that, ppl say joell ortiz (who i'm not a fan of, but RIPPED kendrick's verse) shouldn't be allowed to stake his claim because he's not relevant enough and his album sales aren't up??

i swear, if every "MC" he named and mofos he didn't name but consider themselves the best don't come back with a response and challenge this guy, i've lost all faith in the competition/sport aspect of hip hop in 2013 (as if it wasn't almost all gone already)..

i mean, this COULD be a great thing if it ignites a return to form and challenges dudes to show how good they are, because i think that's needed... but if all we end up with are some "tee-hee" tweets, i can't get with any of this...

perfect analogy for this weak shit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B25ywedwU04

I could give two sh!ts about album sales...that dude is mad corny and probably the worst rap voice I have ever heard.

If he didn't jump on this chance to be the first to respond, the only people letting words "Joelle Ortiz" come out of their mouth this weekwould be the few remaining Eminem fans that have convinced themselves Slaughterhouse makes good music.

Which makes sense, given the kid is still a teenager. He's still in many ways finding his voice as an artist, however, when it comes to MCing, he's super nice.

While GKMC may have been Kendrick's major label debut and the first thing the masses heard from him, he had been grinding for years and years, and had already put out two albums basically, in addition to a couple mixtapes, countless guest appearances, and some significant touring. Once Joey has all that under his belt, then we can discuss him I think.

But Joey's the only one I see on deck.

Joey's an oldies act. Kendrick clearly has influences too but he's found a way to create his own sound. Exquire has successfully done that but I think he'll stay relatively underground.

what i think is interesting is how kdot's statement is actually being taken seriously and not dismissed as a rappity-rapping rapper whining about how lame and weak popular rappers are, which in the early 2000's happened ever other day.

I mean obviously dude is a cut above everyone else as both a rapper and and artist (the universal acclaim of good kid madd city by critics and the mainstream success of the, well, mainstream), is it because he trojan horsed it, rode in on the DL, earned the right to be heard, then used his platform to make a bold statement? Why isn't he getting the "shut up hater" all the post-rawkus bitter underground cats got stamped with in the mid 2000's? Is the mainstream hip hop culture ready for hardcore lyrical-ness again?

holy hell i havent posted since like 2009

I like the song. Kendrick's verse was cool, and I like that NO ID is getting the work now he's always deserved. But I wish this social media generation we're in would stop acting like everything is the best thing ever. Remember when Odd Future performed on Fallon and y'all claimed it was gonna "change hip-hop like Wu-Tang?" lol.

What's the big deal about a rapper saying he's better than other rappers? Not to mention, he only named rappers he's cool with. People are acting like Hit Em Up/Takeover/Ether just dropped. This dude just told his friends he wants to be better than them lol.

Maybe that's a big deal for the skinny jeans hip hop, because he's not rapping about skateboards or snap backs or whatever they usually talk about, but I'm surprised to see fans on this board and older hip-hop heads being impressed at all. I mean shit I'm used to listening to, it's EXPECTED that mc's are trying to kill the competition.

There's no reason this is "revolutionary" or "drawing a line in the sand" like dude said above. What's new about it? Stop acting like he called out all of the industry, he safely told his friends "I got love for y'all, but I'm trying to murder you", what's revolutionary about an MC saying that?

This reminds me when non-hip hop heads heard Eminem and were like "wow look at his multi-sylable rhymes!" and heads were like "um we BEEN doing that." Maybe this new school just isn't used to hearing MC's being hungry? I'm used to it, so this didn't really blow me away.

Also, as New Yorker, I can honestly say I don't care about the KONY shit. Saying he juggles both coasts with one hand hit me like Canibus saying he plays pool with the planets. Bragging rhymes. Is that revolutionary too?

...but a few summers ago this guy CM Punk went on a tirade on TV about how unfair his treatment had been during his tenure with the company.

It was very good : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OS9wZGb_3g

The day after, even Jim Rome questioned on his TV show the consequences CM Punk would face (because Rome assumed it was real) and the internet blew up.

Now in retrospect I've sort of realized that this sort of promo happened every week in 1999, but Punk's promo was especially powerful because no one talks in earnest on WWE TV anymore. The WWE writes everything for these guys and the authenticity of their performances has suffered for it.

Now you're dealing with a similar situation in this Kendrick verse. I disagree with you that it isn't that special because I do think it's special as a standalone verse. It's one of those stunning performances we would've heard from Eminem in 02 or Wayne in 07. But even past that this verse is being received the way it is because of the current landscape of rap. I can't recall a time when there's been so few inspired and original rap acts, so little substance to be found across the genre. So when a guy comes out and actually calls it how he sees it - HEY LISTEN UP PUSSY RAPPERS! YOU'RE ALL PUSSY RAPPERS! - especially with it having not happened in so long, it really hits hard.

In short, the context isn't everything with this verse but it's undoubtedly a major factor.

maybe people won't just phone it in on their verses now and actually go hard every time out. maybe some great hip hop albums will come out of this. it's obviously affecting the hip hop world and i'm happy to see the outcome. i don't know why people have to get so angry. i don't like kid cudi at all, but i think his response to this was great.

but KL's verse stopped time for a minute... everyone talked about it and that's great for hip hop.

I'm not surprised people on here aren't impressed... that's typical internet bullshit. Either its' the greatest or wackest rap in the world but one thing rings true.

That verse was a problem and had everyone talking about it.

Rappers don't name names anymore.. everyone wants to be friends and make money but no one wants to keep it real like the old days. Hip hop is about destroying your competition on wax and KL reminded niggas that this industry shit has gassed these dudes up and made them lazy.

just glad to here an artist on a major speak up and try to get these other mc's to step their bars up.

"1 of the best verses ever recorded" stands out. No shots but we can receive 30 better verses off the top of our heads but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Mods, please archive this. I'm quoting this post after a Kendrick flop or wack bar. I fucks with him but the hyperbole has to stop.

Joe Budden has the best response but Papoose gained the most from this by beefing with Kendrick and Peter Rosenberg.

was great or even good. But I think it all depends on the ears you have and what you judge these type verses on. Folks here are the same ones who say "Hit em up" was average, horrible, or "lyrically mediocre" instead of recognizing how brutal it was, and how much aggression and energy it had. And I realized when I made my "East vs West" set on my last mix...when it comes to a lot of West Coast disses, or standout verses period, it's not about the lyrical complexity...but the pure aggression and delivery. Which is why "Drop a gem on em" doesn't hit nearly as hard as anything Pac dropped. Common destroyed Cube, yet you can still get hype off Cube saying plan/wack lines like "I'm bombin on Common Sense! Chicago is mine, nigga hit the fence!!!!"

Even with that, Kendrick's lyrics may only be a 8/10 on this verse, but the delivery, use of voice, flow, and then impact of what he said is easily 10/10.
