"Its been 10 years ago today since Roger Troutman's passing..."

Share a favorite song, memory, or your love for all things Zapp/Roger here:

First show I ever went to was a Zapp show in Frisco in '91. I was the tender age of 9, but I still think its the best show I've ever been to. Its still very clear in my mind too; Roger on the talkbox and guitar, Lester on drums, Larry on percussion and bass, Sherman Fleetwood on keyboard.

This joint was a STAPLE at my junior high dances, I don't think I went to a dance in junior high or h.s. that didn't play this at least once:

Before I was allowed to have 2pac or hip hop albums in my parents house (grew up in a VERY religious household), I was listening to bumping grooves like this:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/5918668863c23658/

(Imagine how much I flipped out when I heard "Keep ya head up," and all the EPMD/Def Squad joints that sampled Zapp and roger!)

This is probably my fav. dedication song to Roger

Roger is the only person that i've met (so far) that i've been truly star struck by.

i can't remember if i opened the show, if my boy did, or if we did it together, but we met him backstage at a concert here in Detroit at the Fox Theater. i'll never forget it. he had on this white suit and i swear to God...it looked like he was glowing, son. dude straight up had an aura of light surrounding him.

i don't recall saying too much too him, but he was definitely cool and cordial. we got to see the whole band doing soundcheck and they sounded JUST LIKE THE RECORDS. straight FUNKY. i was SO geeked to be witnessing that shit.

anyway...after soundcheck, the group came together for a group prayer led by Roger (who, mind you, had the glow like Sho Nuff). i turned and looked around and...it's fuckin' SHIRLEY MURDOCK BEHIND ME, NIGGA.

i had to bounce like immediately after this because i had another gig to run to, so i didn't get a chance to see the actual show...but that was more than enough. if i remember correctly, it was only a few months after that concert that Roger got killed. i couldn't believe it. who would/could kill such a seemingly gentle, FUNKY soul?? shit was crazy.

at any rate, this is a little tribute that i did a few years back.

I was fortunate enough to see him live once in 85 at a small venue called the Crest Theater. We did a lot of parties there back in the day so we had some contacts and slipped in for the sound check. I remember Roger being in a real good mood. He was walking around joking with the band and at once point even broke into Rick's Cold Blooded on the talkbox. Our boy Sid introduced us and we got to chop it up with Roger for like 2-3 minutes. My impressions of dude were always of the laid back funny and friendly cat we saw that day. Of course he absolutely murdered it on stage that night. The light up jacket was bananas.

his guitar playing is seriously slept on. Often that would be the highlight of a Roger and/or Zapp album.

I saw Zapp LIVE in the 90's. Roger and crew rocked the house! I am still a fan of his musicianship and songwriting. I plan on owning all of the albums he worked on.

the part that was sampled for the MC Breed and Jungle Brothers song is my mothaf*ckin' sh*t.

very little angers me more than hearing them play this song on the radio and playing the short edit or fading it out when the solo comes on.

again...that is my mothaf*ckin' sh*t.

on the short list of my favorite songs ever.

That shit literally gives me chills.

I hear you on cutting that jam short. That's bullshit. In fact, when I run doubles of "More Bounce..." in clubs, I play the first refrain and then just cut right to the dope part.

RIP ROGER

Michigan State University...

some dude on campus had a something or other (lol...i can't remember what kinda car it was now), but he had chrome on the side (lmao!) and some SERIOUS sounds in that mug. i heard him creeping through campus a few times and all i could really make out was that high pitched synth.

for a brief period, i was wondering why that ni##a was rolling around pumping Belly Dancin' Dina. ni##as (as a whole) wasn't f*ckin' w/sh*t like that...LMAO.

i wasn't wrong...ni##as wasn't fading no Jungle Brothers. LOL.

to the beat y'all.

RIP Roger & MC Breed. (and the straight Afrika Baby Bam.)

..............damn if they didn't rip that damn stage to shreds. And to hear the brother, with the deep voice, sang, "I can make you daaaaaaaaaaance", and it was so clear, i damn near wet myself lol !!!!! And Roger, was just so hyped !!!!!! Oh man, they tore it up !!!!! I remember the first time i heard his version of, "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", on the radio. I remember telling my mom to turn that up, please. She did, and we both jammed all the way to the seward park. I didn't get out the car, until the song was over. Also remember when the radio station had got the long version, and they started playing it. It's funny, cause once they got the long version, i never heard the single version again(even after i had bought, well actually, my mom bought the album for me. I guess that's why i like albums, and didn't really care for 45's or greatest hits packages).

silk.

for years he had only "heard" Roger, and it was the first Roger video The Doc had ever seen. Didn't even know there were videos for the songs on The New Zapp IV U until recently.

unfortunately, while The Doc was able to hear a lot of these acts on the radio, he was living in places (W. NY and IN) where if you were lucky enough to see a Black artist's videos it was post-Prince and MJ, and only "main line" artists like Rick James and the like. It would have to be on a music show that sometimes showed clips like Solid Gold or the like.

and The Doc used to be scared of MTV, LOL...so he didn't watch it.

Zapp MUST be on in the ride in some shape or form.

The Doc remembers hearing Roger on the radio in Cleveland doing a live commentary, shortly before he died in '99...

...dude is one of The Doc's musical heroes without questions, and The Doc will be back w/links if need be.

Forgot the title but the chorus goes something like ..

'And we miss you
You're part of everything We do'

blasting the shit out of 'do it Roger'

Zapp and low rider culture have all but been fused together... mixes well like cigar paper and chronic

hard to believe a decade. oh back in the day we wore out his albums and would play musical chairs to Roger and Zapp. his multi instrumentalist ability is so under-appreciated. dude was bad, but the talk box and his light-hearted approach kept him so cool and real.

he just stayed real and down to earth right down to the troutman apartment buildings they had back in the day.

but sadly family and business ain't always a good mix. sad and hard to believe it's been 10 years. dude was only 47.
