"The Only 'Best Albums of 2008' Post The Lesson Needs."
Mon Nov-10-08 10:52 PM by DarkStar

Y'know, the Grammy cutoff date should be September 30th of each year. Music that's eligible for nomination comes out between October 1 of the previous year and the aforementioned September 30th.

As I type this, it's November 10th.

So what the hell are WE waitin' for, a bus? I feel it's time.

Lemme see your your ten favorites released this year. ALL genres--don't coke-rap me to fuckin' tears, here, people.

Boxsets count, too--if they were released in '08, of course.

And bootlegs.

And rips of burns of rips of albums, too. As long as that music was originally released in 2008.

Okay, let's go.

Goldfrapp - "Seventh Tree"
Flying Lotus - "Los Angeles"
C.R.A.C. Knuckles - "The Piece Talks"
Lil' Wayne - "Tha Carter III"
Frank Zappa - "Zappa/Wazoo"
El-P - "WeAreAllGoingToBurnInHellMegamixx2"
Q- Tip - "The Renaissance"
Erykah Badu - "New Amerykah, Part One: 4th World War"
Miles Davis - "The Complete 'On the Corner' Sessions"
Portishead - "Third"

Don't be like me--have your mind made up BEFORE you drop your ten, so you're not looking at your list funny like, "...Naaah, I need to edit that..." Look through your file folders and Case Logic books, think about it, then come see me.

In response to Reply # 2

because I still haven't been able to listen to a few albums (ie Tronic, Evolver, The Rennaissance etc.) and I don't want to have to go back on my word. Here's five off the bat in no particular order:

The Foriegn Exchange- Leave it all Behind

This is easily my favorite album of the year. The production, coupled with the lyrical content and vocal arrangements made for a great listening experience. This is the first album in a very long time to give me "that" feeling. I don't know how to explain it, but I know it when I feel it.

Joe Budden- Halfway House

It hasn't been discussed too much in The Lesson, but I was really feeling this. I enjoyed it moreso for the lyrical content and song concepts than the production. I particularly like the joints Sidetracked, Under the Sun, and Check Me Out. I like hip hop thats lyrical and personal. Not flawless, but great considering it was done it 2 weeks.

Neyo- Year of The Gentleman

There seems to be mixed feelings about this album, but I really enjoyed the album. He does bite a lot of MJ stuff, but I'm an MJ fan, so I can appreciate it. Some people find his writing corny, but I find it refreshing compared to all of the sleazy sex ridden R&B that comes out. The album has a diverse sound, but he doesn't overdo it.

R. Kelly- 12 Play Fourth Quarter

This album will probably never be released, but it should at least be revamped like the whole Chocolate Factory/Loveland fiasco. When Robert decides not to bite whats popular (Skin, Hairbraider), and do what he does, he succeeds. Songs like Whole Lotta Kisses, Freaky Sensation, Playas Get Lonely and a few others show that he can still make that sexual music without being sleazy. Songs like Two Seater is what he should not ever do.

Elzhi- The Preface

I never really checked for Elzhi but I checked this out because I wanted some new music at the time and it was getting good reviews. Dude can spit, and has a way of capturing my attention. I wish dude was better with the hooks, but his song concepts are dope. I fux with Guessing Game and Transitional Joint, but I dont really like Fire remix. I'm still listening to this album to really ingest it all.

these are my 2nd and 3rd favorite albums (after portishead 'third') of the albums released in 2008 that i've heard

1. New Amerykah, E. Badu

10. Santogold, Santogold

not far behind (probably top 10 for me) is
8. The Odd Couple, Gnarls Barkley

i tried and failed to find the post where i explained, but anyway the short version is that i buy albums the week they're released if they're on sale and i know i'll enjoy them (why pay more later), but it may be a while before i get around to listening because i like to give each album my full attention when listening for the first time, reading along with the lyrics if they're in the booklet. if not for this routine, i could listen to them quickly but disjointedly and without concentration, which isn't how i do things with the albums i buy. that's why i usually don't do top 10 of the year lists until the next year.

Obviously I haven't heard everything that was released, thus no Q-Tip or Foreign Exchange just yet, and I'm still going through my collection, column, and OKP reviews to be sure I haven't missed anything. I will say that a few months ago, the Sonar Kollektiv Orchestr album was on top of my list. When I heard Jazzanova's was coming out, I had to pave the way for that. I was late to her album, but once I heard Kylie Auldist, I knew it was going to be very close to the top, if not the top.

Again, another great year for good music, so despite the struggles of the industry, it hasn't stopped people from making quality work.

When I make a list of albums, it consists of albums that I liked throughout the year. I still stand by my review:
http://www.okayplayer.com/reviews/may-2008/scarlett-johansson-200805215763/

Was it ever going to be chosen as my album of the year, no. The Sonar Kollektiv Orchestr album had been my favorite album up until I knew Jazzanova were going to come out with one. Then I came across Kylie Auldist's album and was totally blown away by that. Badu's album would be up there, so right there that's a decent Top 4.

I did like The Roots' album a lot but they tend to do one album for the purists, one album that forces people to think and RISING DOWN was the thinking man's album. That's not to say that GAME THEORY wasn't a thinking man's album, because the concept was heavy, it was dark for the majority of the album until they hit the Dilla tribute, that to me represent optimism for the future. When they get into something more complex, you have to listen to it a number of times for it to settle in. So for now, my Top 5 would look like this:

1. Kylie Auldist-Say That
2. Jazzanova-Of All The Things
3. Sonar Kollektiv Orchestra-Guaranteed Niceness
4. Erykah Badu-New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)
5. The Roots-Rising Down

I have not heard Foreign Exchange or Q-Tip's new one, and I don't want people to think "oh, Book's on OKP so he has to put up some Okayplayer's in his list to make it valid". That's not it. If an album feels good to me for whatever reason, it goes on. I would still make these choices regardless. I enjoy going for the underdog, and if I find something that moves me, I'll support it. Badu's album was very much like that, the woman is always heavy and the fact that the majority of people didn't understand it and felt "Honey" was a reason to soothe the bitterness of the album's tone made me realize that no one is tapping into what she's offering. The album was incredibly funky, it had Madlib on it and yet it was as if people bitched because she was getting "too weird". C'mon, this is Badu, who has never been afraid to do something left of center, it isn't Ashanti. This is why I also liked Scarlett Johansson's album, because as I've said many times before, it fucked with the notion of what people expected her to sound like. People expected bubbly, sexy, maybe some kind of dance record that they can fap to. Instead, it was an album with a dreadful vibe, and one doesn't normally associate someone who looks like that with music that sounds like new wave goth. It was the most un-mainstream mainstream album out there, and I'm a Tom Waits fan too, so the idea of a woman adding a female perspective to his work was unique. It's not unlike Prince singing Joni Mitchell lyrics. Words do not have sexual or gender orientation, but we do know who wrote them, and we are comfortable with the original author. When someone of the opposite sex sings those same lyrics, it can offer a different dynamic, even if it's only to say "she's singing the words of a man". Imagine if Rosario Dawson did an album of Leonard Cohen covers, would it work better? Of course we all know how Dawson's singing voice sounds, so maybe it would.

Anyway, it gets old having to explain myself why I liked Johansson's album, with people saying "try listening to it before reviewing it". I listened to the album a number of times before I wrote that review, that's how I always do it. How about "try reading my review before making any judgments, to know where I was coming from"? It also means someone read my work, enough to bash me for my opinion and I'm alright with that.

Do you do anything besides listen to music? I don't think I could get thru all those albums in a year let alone still have time to put in throwback albums that I feel like listening to..

Probably why I don't get into new music as much, just don't have the time anymore so listen to established artists I like and once in a while take a chance on something new, usually ending up going back to the old stuff I enjoy more.

I find myself becoming more selective as far as what is new, and at times I do enjoy listening without a need to be critical, or having to do a review. Or even better, to take a break.

I find myself wanting to explore more of what I missed or didn't know of, and it's nothing against the new. That's why when I do hear something that blows me away, I want to tell everyone. Unfortunately hearing something good means having to listen to a lot of bad.

I do know what you're saying. Would I be qualified to write a review, sure. Would I be qualified to write a decent review, being someone who hasn't taken a deep listen to their music over the last few years, probably not. I would have to get all of their albums and take it all in first, if I wanted to do the review in the way you'd want me to.

I believe it was you who had brought it up, but I have listened to some of the albums I missed, and there's a lady I know in the Bay Area who is a huge Radiohead fan (she traveled to London just to see them) and had sent me their B-sides and everything. I now understand the buzz, and I wish I didn't shut myself off after PABLO HONEY. I like the singles, as far as what had been turned into videos, and by the time they were getting the buzz with OK COMPUTER, I was shocked to know that these were the guys who made "Creep". I got into a lot of other music, and I missed the bus basically, and I have found myself wanting to catch up. Unlike you, I'm not able to listen to it in real time the way you had with other Radiohead fans, but it has allowed me to listen to it without the current buzz that an album can have at any particular time.

If I were to review the next album, I would have to go back and listen to everything they've done so I can get a feel for what they were trying to do as a group. Along with that, I was always amazed when people compared them to Pink Floyd. I'm a huge PF fan, and I didn't want anyone to fuck with that. I do hear the similarities, as far as taking certain sounds to a new place, taking the lyrics down a new avenue, and any sense of continuity. It sounds like they enjoy what they're doing, and fans are there for the ride, not unlike nine inch nails.

EDIT: For me, I tend to get more music from new artists, so I don't have to go back into their catalog. If it's a band like Melvins, I can go directly to their 6 song EP on C/Z since I've been a fan for (yikes) 22 years. I'm able to at least know about their progression, the changes, the growth, all of the stuff that allows me to review it objectively. I don't have that with Radiohead yet, but it's not too late. As I said before too, as everyone started to jump on the Radiohead bandwagon, I avoided it. Now that we're a few years behind OK COMPUTER, I can appreciate what they did up to and afterwards, and hopefully get a grasp of what they'll do next.

you told me a couple years ago that you hadn't listened to their albums and that you were interested but not planning to listen any time soon.

it's not that i think every person on earth should listen to them, let alone like them, it's just that i expect any self-respecting reviewer to be at least somewhat familiar with a major artist's work before reviewing something new. i can't imagine anyone professionally reviewing a radiohead album having not heard the other ones (or even having only heard 'pablo honey'). that said, it can be a good thing to divorce oneself from hype and buzz to be able to approach a piece of art/music on its own terms and judge it on its own merits. i do this myself with my aforementioned wait time between when i might buy (or download) an album and when i actually listen to it. it's sometimes years, as i said in that topic i couldn't find.

I feel the same way - I love listening to new artists and checking out real fresh music, but there's so many people trying to be up-and-coming, that it's rare that i find something real new that I love. Therefore I too end up going back to lots of established artists who i know and love. It's not a knock on new artists; I fully support them, just not all of them can be classics.

Meaning, first few listens I thought it had some gems......a 3 outta 5 mic album. And then I found myself still going back to it and now I don't see how I was kinda cool towards it. 4 mics!

Btw, that album contains two of the best beats EVER by Madlib and Black Milk.

I'm a longtime Beck fan, have heard some of the tracks but not the album in full. Maybe I'll pick that up today.

Positive I'm forgetting stuff.

1. Why? - Alopecia (I really don't want to put this at the top, but every time I listen I think my album of the year.)
2. Erykah Badu - New Amerykah (Honestly, Twinkle may be my favorite song of the year)
2. Moka Only - Claptrap
3. Q-Tip - The Renaissance (Combined with election day, this album felt like good news nobody expected.)
4. Steinski Retrospective
5. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig (His band is awesome. Listened to this one over and over on a Wyoming road trip.)
6. Brightback Morning Light - Motion to Rejoin
7. Foreign Exchange - Leave it All Behind (Felt nice to bump some RnB this year. For some reason, the last song really bugs me, but I love everything else.)
8. Subtle - Exiting Arm (I guess I might be running low, because I do like this album, but it didn't blow my mind or nothing.)
9. PUTS- Fun DMC
10.M83 - Saturdays = Youth

----
I check for: Serengeti, Zeroh, Open Mike Eagle, Jeremiah Jae, Moka Only.

i should listen to this, but i really get turned off when hip-hop and electronic musicians abandon their genre for (stale) indie rock.

>2. Erykah Badu - New Amerykah (Honestly, Twinkle may be my

that song is certainly one of mine. it gave me a whole new respect for and insight into ms. wright.

>10.M83 - Saturdays = Youth

this is a dope album. b/c it was an illegal d/l, i only listened once, but whenever i buy it i'm sure i'll listen just as compulsively as you.

If you like cLOUDDEAD and Reaching Quiet, then you'll at least know that those projects weren't 100 percent hip-hop either. It's different, but go into it knowing that it's different and *maybe* you'll hear it differently.

not* 100% hip-hop (which is fine, maybe even preference) isn't the same as jumping ship. a lot of my lower tier favorite artists have done just that. it's like the idea of indie rock (or folk rock or however you want to break it down) is supposed to be more impressive and sincere. i'll check out this why? album after i check out mum's last album, meaning a long time from now.

*confusing typo fixed

>i should listen to this, but i really get turned off when

I'm actually kind of burnt out on the whole 'Beck' sound in rock, which is why I tend to feel weird liking this album so much. But there's plenty of hip hop and electronic sounds in it, plenty of rapping. A lot of the sounds are upbeat, but the lyrics are super dark. Some are repulsive, yet still fascinating. One of my favorite choruses on the album is "Stalker's my whole style, and when I get caught, I'll deny, deny, deny." It's sung to a really pleasant melody, but when you realize what he's singing, it makes it even better. Anyway, the lyrics are definitely weird, but they're not inscrutable at all and almost always rewarding to listen to.

I know what you mean about the whole abandonment thing, but it feels more like they added things instead of stripped things away. Still, nothing has that kind of trademark Anticon ambient fuzz over boom bap drums sound. But it is dense, weird, rhythmic stuff.

In response to Reply # 0

IS THE BEST HIP HOP ALBUM OF THE YEAR.
I've heard everything but LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND (I'm buying it today!), and I have not heard a hip hop album as good as RISING DOWN all year.
Most of the hip hop albums that have come out this year aren't ALBUMS, they're just a CD WITH X AMOUNT OF SONGS.
We talking ALBUMS or RELEASES?
I know cats are stuck on this "who needs a whole piece of work when I can get the ringtone?" icrap, but I'm not understanding how cats can so quickly forget how much better this album is than every hip hop release we've had this year.
Like it's hip to make second place the winner or something.

Okay, rant over, resume pretending Elzhi had a better album.

I'm not redoing the whole list but "L7's" Top 20 for me. I'll drop Jake to honorable mention to be fair, I guess. "L7" would probably be in that #8-12 range.

Also, 88-Keys was decent, but not cracking the Top 20.

Termanology and Koushik finally arrived in the mail; honorable mentions.

Mr. West!? Ay, yo I don't know, but not Top 20.

Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind (hands down this album has moved me the most this year

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah (floored me when I first heard it, was so thankful to hear her come back and someone singing about meaningful topics)

2000 Black - Next Set A Rockers (when I want to hear broken and dance music there is nothing better than this album this year)

Devin The Dude - Landing Gear (always listening to this. in the car.. when i'm not playing FE its this or z-ro)

Z-Ro - Crack (alot of people don't know about this man that aren't from the south, but he always comes with the heat.)

Jazzanova - Of All The Things (another album that really hits a spot, I like every song on this except for Lie)

Erik Rico - Journey Back To Me (another overlooked album as it was only released as download and more for the niche of people that like underground soul and broken..but of all the albums i've played this more than anything in 2008)

IG Culture - Zen Badism (amazing concept album... haven't played as much as the others.. but I recognize how good it is)

edit: The Roots - Rising Down (almost left that out, but I played the shit out of this for a while)

OKP best of lists are always a trip for me cuz suprise, suprise, I still check for ridiculous things like new york underground rap and dont even know who Shawn Jackson or Charles Hamilton are. That said, that Erykah Badu album def suprised me and has stayed in rotation.

This is in order:

Madlib- Beat Konducta
Invizzibl Men- The Unveiling
Erykah Badu- New Amerykah
Large Pro- Main Source

Top 10, at the moment:

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah: Part One
Young Jeezy - The Recession
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Prodigy - H.N.I.C. (Part Two)
Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III
The Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind
N*E*R*D - Seeing Sounds
Black Milk - Tronic
G-Unit - Return Of The Bodysnatchers

Honorable mentions to Wale, Tanya Morgan, Kid Cudi and Spec Boogie for also holding me down on the EP/mixtape front.

...I'm still anxiously awaiting new albums this year from 50 Cent, Common & Kanye West, but I don't see this list changing *that* much by years-end.

Most of my favorite releases have already been listed but definitely THH deserves a mention in this post.

I really dug Phonte's Unheralded Symmetrics - The Story of U.S. I'm hoping for a follow-up, a comedic take on the whole autotune monstrosity.

I can appreciate all the time some of y'all took to think hard and write down your long lists and I'm a fan of all the backpack shit don't get me wrong... but having said that there's only one album I've listened to again and again since it came out this year... at the beginning I wasn't feeling it too much, but it grew on me like crazy... The Game "L.A.X." - don't hate, you know you love it too

I didn't like it and couldn't make it thru the album and I actually liked his first two albums, aside from a little too much name-dropping. I'll try to listen again to see if I missed something tho since maybe I just wasn't in the mood.

Al Green - Lay It Down
N*E*R*D - Seeing Sounds
Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind
Jazzanova - Of All The Things
Jamie Lidell - Jim
Dwele - Sketches of Man
Black Milk - Tronic

Down year for hip-hop compared to 2007, my shit went all the way alternative/R&B*

Other albums I really dug this year:

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Solange - Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams
Statik Selektah - Stick 2 the Script
Dela - Changes in Atmosphere
Wale - Mixtape About Nothing

I haven't heard the Santogold album, but I plan to before years end.

So far...

Honorable Mention:

Fela Kuti & Hov. One of my favorite mash ups of all time, played it a whole lot more than AG. My list would probably look a little like

1. nigerian gangster
2. time line
3. renaissance
4. rising down
5. when life gives you lemons
6. first of all...
7. adam's case files
8. the only color that matters is green (no mention of this either? that's a shame)
9. lay it down
10. new amerykah

honorable mentions: tronic, death of adam, who is this man? (john robinson), the preface, the way i see it, little dragon

If I made a list, I'd mention Nigerian gangster no doubt. I usually don't care for mashup albums but that one was awesome. And I agree about it being a lot more listenable than AG.

i've noticed looking through these lists that i slacked off big time this year when it came to listening to music. I didn't listen to a lot this year. I listened to mostly artists i knew that had releases coming out and not much new stuff.

It's funny with Portishead, because I can recall them receiving a lukewarm reception when the album first dropped. I like to think "Machine Gun" reminded a lot of people that they're still the shit without the turntablism and overt hip-hop references (although the track "Plastic" is an effective throwback for the hardheads).

The Best Albums (aka I liked/loved every song on these...)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind
Esperanza Spalding - Esperanza
Roy Hargrove - Earfood
Jazmine Sullivan - Fearless
Guillemots - Red
Mary J. Blige - Growing Pains (I know this was technically December 2007...)
Jackson Conti - Sujinho
Zo & Tigallo Love The 80's

I REALLY liked certain songs on these, but I didn't like the whole album:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Roots - Rising Down
Common - Universal Mind Control
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah: Part 1 (4th World War)
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
Young Jeezy - The Recession
Guilty Simpson - Ode To The Ghetto
Black Milk - Tronic
Jazzanova - Of All The Things
Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It
Beyonce - I Am...Sasha Fierce
Musiq Soulchild - Onmyradio
Al Green - Lay It Down
Madlib - WLIB AM: King Of The Wigflip
T-Pain - Thr33 Ringz
Jennifer Hudson - Jennifer Hudson
Robin Thicke - Something Else
John Legend - Evolver
Scarface - Emeritus
Q-Tip - The Renaissance
Brandy - Human
Usher - Here I Stand
T.I. - Paper Trail

Best Reissue to drop in 2008
-------------------------------------
George Duke - My Soul: The Complete MPS Fusion Recordings

And of course, how could I forget? Some guy talking about dirt and cymbals FINALLY put his album out this year...that was dope...

*cheese grin*

I feel like every single year there's always a gang of people who say it

I haven't listened to enough hip hop to say whether I think this year was good, but I can say haven't heard a hip hop album this year I like as much as the best albums from the past few years (Below The Heavens/ISWYD/Ali in 2007 and Game Theory/APOS/F&L advance in 2006 for starters)

In response to Reply # 0

Leon Ware - Moon Ride is really one of my favourites this year.
Also, you should all check out Natalie Gardiner and her album 'California' from 2008. She's got a reaally deep soul voice, maybe one of the best I've heard the last few years.

Also, I thought that Melo - Off My Chest was quite good, though I was a bit too mellow (pun intended).

2.) Guns n' Roses - Chinese Democracy
3.) Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life

well I could only come up with seven. I listened to a bunch, but none of the others really compared to my final group (to me).

7. Santogold :: Santogold
- Albums overhyped before I listen to them (*cough* Fleet Foxes) I usually end up hating, but what can I say about this? It's hipster popular and still pretty damn good.

6. MGMT :: Oracular Spectacular
- I run hot and cold on this one. Sometimes I think it's top three, other times I think it should be honorable mention. But the fact I'm still listening to it to decide which must mean something.

5. Lil Wayne :: The Carter III
- Grew on me, a lot. Wayne's rapping has taken a nosedive thanks to drugs and overexposure, but you can't deny the cascade of fun hits that this album provides. pretty much the club/party soundtrack to my 2008.

4. Starfucker :: Starfucker
- Sleeper album that I can't stop playing. A little inconsistent, but never bad and the strong tracks are on constant repeat. Just a great album with short poppy songs that get you through a road trip or cleaning the crib.

3. Cut Copy :: In Ghost Colours
- Does nothing really new but the retro sounds it draws from are so damn catchy. Very well layered; there's always a break or beat shift that has me re-picking my favorite song on the album every week.

2. Young Jeezy :: The Recession
- No it's not as good as 101 or The Inspiration. Yes, there are a few too many songs that sound alike and the R&B hooks ruin sequencing. But then you listen to something like "Get Allot" or "Who Dat" or "My President" and forget all of those flaws -- because this is a master at work, perfecting the art of trap rap. And of course, "Put On" has yet to get old to me.

1. Lloyd :: Lessons in Love
- The one album I enjoyed the most this year. perfectly sequenced, minus the fat of Street Love but with the same staying power. Eric Hudson produced his ass off. J-Lack and Polow dropped bombs. Play it while you ride over to your girl's apartment, play it in the living room while you eat dinner, then play it in the bedroom while you fuck.

My top 10 of 2008 in no particular order:

Tronic, by Black Milk
Life...The Best Game In Town, by Harvey Milk
Doomsdayer's Holiday, by Grails
The Way I See It, by Raphael Saadiq
Dear Science, by TV On The Radio
Smile, by Boris
The Ruiner, by Made Out of Babies
Heretic Pride, by The Mountain Goats
Meanderthal, by Torche
Third, by Portishead

The new Foreign Exchange would've been on my list if I heard it in 2008. Although some of these might take some getting used to I picked mostly albums that can have some cross-genre appeal (at least more than my other choices would be.)
