"since the last Sa-Ra post was so much fun"

i want to talk a little bit about their lyrics

some of them kinda bother me

i mean, i'm not a prude... in fact, some could even argue that i'm a degenerate. but i don't know why i'm sorta put off my all these lines about grabbing people's cocks and licking them from their ass to their crotch.

their music is great, but i think these lyrics cheapen it a little bit... it's not necessary. and i don't think it's sexy either.

what's MOST distrubing about this, though, is that i find myself identifying with Mr Coolidge, who consistently dogs my man Cody for his vulgar language (which doesn't offend me in the least) and accuses him of deliberately coarsening his songs in order to appeal to the unwashed and unlettered hip-hop demographic. i don't think Cody does this, but i think Sa-Ra do... and i wish they would stop.

(interestingly enough, Warren has no problem with Sa-Ra's vulgarity... go figga, my nigga)

I'll answer...

first why don't you repeat to me what you believe my problem with Cody and the "bad words" are...

reason I say this is because when this is coming up, you're not accurately presenting my views on Cody and the usage of those words...

first of all...it's not really fair to compare an officially released album with a collection of demos, and other stuff which may or may not be on their album...and even if it is on their album....maybe not in the same state..

but....If Sa-Ra had said..."I've got a d*ck full of blood and an open heart to lean on" I would have said that was cheesy as hell....

Cody was, to me, cheesy and pretentious in some places of his album....it seemed as though he was trying to tip his hat to the hip hop community and make his lyrics gully real quick, just to seem cool....it wasn't consistent, and seemed pretentious to me..

doesn't mean I didn't like his album....but there are others I've liked much better....

Sa-Ra...from the songs we heard have a unique style...i don't get that same pretenious feeling ....and again I don't judge that CDr as if it's their album...it just isn't...

I think you might want to ask the females about that....Ask them which line would they be more open too....I'm not certain, but I think a female may be open to the lick rather than the dictionary definition for an erection...

plus...this is not a good comparison....let's wait until Sa-Ra's album comes out.

first of all, i don't see how it matters whether or not they have a full album out. these are lyrics that they wrote and they perform in public. and almost every song has lyrics like this, so i don't think it's an anomaly

also, they talk about "cocks" a lot... in my experience, women tend to be a bit more offended by the c-word than the d-word

>first of all, i don't see how it matters whether or not they
>have a full album out. these are lyrics that they wrote and
>they perform in public.

I still don't see it as a fair comparison. And as I've repeated several times...it's not the fact that they used the words, it's the context in which they are used....From Cody=Corny....from Sa-RA=not corny. I mean that's just my opinion.

think about it for a minute...why would Warren Coolidge dismiss an artist JUST because they used some sexual language??? being that he's a P-funk fan...a Rick James Fan...a Prince fan....So obviously there is more to it than just the usage...The way it was used from Cody sounded corny....seemed like he was trying to hard to fit in...but again, that's just how it sounded with me. Very pretentious.

and almost every song has lyrics
>like this, so i don't think it's an anomaly

um....not the one's iv'e heard.

>
>also, they talk about "cocks" a lot... in my experience,
>women tend to be a bit more offended by the c-word than the
>d-word

could you give examples? because I think this is a bit of an exaggeration...

but again...whatever Sa-Ra's lyrical content is on their demo CDR...nothing jumped out at me like "damn...that was some corny shizt" but first time I heard Cody's album....that jumped out...over time I was able to appreciate him as an artist more...but i certainly don't have the hype you seem to have for him.

theyre not nearly raw enough. and i dont mean lyrically, their stuff is far too 'precise' from the programming to the 'sound' to really be 'stank'. not on those dilla plodding lifeless tracks anyway, - the uptempo tracks is where sa ra REALLY get funky. fuck all this mellow chill out ambient cocktail music.

i don't know who they are trying to appeal to with that, but i can't help but feel that they are deliberately coarsening the stuff to appear less... i dunno, "artsy"... "different" (as the kids say)?

Pharrell did the same thing on the first NERD album with all that unnecessary cursing and stuff

R Kelly's lyrics don't seem as freaky as they should because that kinda thing has become so noramlized that it's... like nothing to us.

i think that SRCP are trying to raise the stakes in the freak game, and i don't know how to feel about that. i mean, i'm all for that kinda thing... but y'know, there's a way to say things... there's a fine line between poetry and pornography (and while i love both of these things, i don't necessarily like them together)

that was his thing

it wasn't until 1992 or so that "freakiness" became the industry standard and "lick you up and down" became a required line to use on every single R&B album

funk was bringing the freakiness for years before 1992...Cameo...Midnight Star...BarKays...Junie Came with Suzie Super Groupie....

there were tons of artists like that...

which, Sa-Ra is appealing to many people because they harken back to that era...not the friggin silk and jodeci era...The funk been freaky since before them cats were even thought of...

plus the electro funk era...which again is something that Sa Ra makes you harken back to....I need a freak by sexual harrasment...dial a freak by eyptian lover....waaaaaay before 1992

I hear much more 80's funk in Sa-Ra...that is the one influence that totally leaps out at you from the get...that's the influence I've heard them speak on.....

jodeci and silk nor their era started the "freakiness" in R&B...that is just patently untrue, and the era that actually birthed it is the same era that is the most prevelent influence on Sa-RA

Parliment is grown folks music. Sure it is.

I'm speaking in terms of what's considered music for the youth...and music for grown folks. Other than hip hop/rap....there is no no urban music today that is for the youth...so pretty much everything else is grown folks music....

Sa-Ra's appeal....at least what I've gotten from the folks I've hipped to them ...is that they harken back to the time of a Cameo...a P...a Junie Suzie Super Groupie thing....making them different then today's norm...

I don't think their music was all that immature either really.

like what made parliament or prince or rick james so exciting when they were younger. how on earth was prince being mature with lyrics like 'irrestible bitch', ' i wanna fuck the taste out your mouth', 'horny toad', 'head' (!!!!), etc etc. or parliament, talking about peeing in peoples earholes, ending up with a mouth full of goo, etc etc. sure it might not have been as crass (in parliaments case anyway), and might have been more imaginative or adventurous but it was still damn juvenille! and as a kid, i liked that!

If those were the only types of songs they did...I'd agree. But since they weren't, I can't agree at all. And really, if we are comparing even the most crass songs of that era, to the crass songs of today???? I think it's obvious which had a higher level of maturity...and creativity...

you see the reason you liked those lyrics when you were young was because it was a bit counter to the norm at the time....today..crass lyrics are the norm.

why do you like the crude explicit lyrics afkap mentioned?

btw, i think youre using the word mature strangely. there is no way a lyric like 'i sincerely wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth' or lets pretend were married as a whole is mature - the whole concept of that track is like a bunch of teens fooling around.

or Sister...or head...(wait, ignore head)...but none of those songs were played on the radio...none of them.

The sexually explicit songs of today are all on the radio and the Tv...purposely marketed to the youth through popular culture...and the artists purposely present themselves as anti-intellectual beings tied to their lower nature....

Prince did his thing on the under....R.Kelly's thing is woven into the marketed popular culture...directly to the youth.

there's a big difference from my perspective.

prince was seen to be lowering moral standards with 'we can fuck until the dawn, songs about incest, oral sex, etc etc by a lot of older black music listeners. i remember an interview with a MPLS deejay at the time in the mid 80s who talked at great length about how prince was leading kids astray and instilling them with no values. sure it might not have pandered to the youth so blatantly today (prince did appeal to a cross section of ages) but listen to the purple rain concert, those are teenage girls screaming, not women in their 40s.

a guy like Prince was looked at as a rebel
>because he crossed the line on many occasions...but I still
>don't really see how Prince was doing was really promoting
>the type of behavior by young people that say...an R.Kelly

he was just promoting agressive near-rape sex (extra loveable), casual sex without relationships, sex with your sibling, etc etc.

i think youre looking at this a bit too conveniently. if you were 30 in 1981 i bet youd have thought prince was a disgrace. prince just wrote crass stuff better with more flair and imagination and in better songs. he made it into a virtual artform, lol. but it was still crass.

I can honestly say that there is a big difference in what Prince was promoting, and what's being promoted today...

again just my opinion....

but most folks, if their honest think of Prince as far more then the nasty guy....his career ..even then encompassed more then that.....plus kids are younger today when they are exposed to this sexuality...

I'm imagining the Vanity 6 poster I had on my wall...and comparing it to a XXL magazine that a kid could buy today...

I don't know...I still think there's a difference.

but the fact that their current identity is giving us something that current music is just not giving us....that's the real issue.

anything that expands the current state of Black music to include the type of quality it previously had get's a co-sign from me...

if this were 1980, it would be bold and shocking but we live in "anyhting goes" 2004....

the lyrics are desperate for a reaction from the audience, and its visible...

George Clinton's lyrics are a million times more clever and effective becuase of his intelligence and gift for humor...there's also a warped kind of sincerity there that these new cats dont have....

they just wanna say som'n nasty....

they write this shit specifically so you say say "oooh! did you hear what they said?!"

there is also a lack of context, something that Prince and Clinton had for days....they build a lyrical and musical atmosphere where their lyrics are almost called for...

also, the lyrics seemed like a natural extension of their believeable stage personas....most cats today are acting and doing a bad job of it....

I believed Prince was a sex fiend(he is...)I believed George Clinton was a wigged out mad scientist(he is...)but all these new cats put forth a facade of cool that seems very forced and self conscious....and it shows....

I watched Sa-Ra on stage and they were working very hard to play the role of the dudes they want you to believe they are on the records....but if they were doing it right, they wouldnt have to work so hard at it....

allow these artists to exist in the present without constantly comparing them to something from two decades back. its not like the p-funk influence is that evident anyway, apart from some of the singing styles and emphasis on quirkiness.

In response to Reply # 44

but it depends on what you mean by progression. that word usually connotes something boring and self consciously progressive rather than anything remotely edgy or 'fun'. id be interested to know what you think is 'progressive' in the last 10 years.....

>Im looking for progression in our arts, and I see
>regression....

how on earth are sa ra a regression? are you listening to the sounds theyre using? the influences theyre making into a unique hybrid? sure, some of their songs arent exactly profound, but theyre fun, and not in the typical mainstream-urban sense. theyre also imaginative. you know, what youre saying now, is like what a lot of adults in the early 80s said about prince and rick james.

>point blizz....until these young bucks can equal or surpass
>the greatness that came before them, what use do i have for
>them?

maybe, if you stop treating them like theyre some successor to god knows what, and let them be who THEY are (im not saying in every case, musiq and glenn are obvious wack rip offs, but sa ra arent really openly or gratuitously derivative), you might enjoy it a little more.

>If I told you you couldnt have cheese no more, all that is
>left is Velveeta...you'd just accept that, huh?

of course not, but why would i compare sa ra to stevie or curtis or someone like that? theyre not making trad-soul music or trying to. i dont expect to hear a mamas gun from them, or a voodoo. theyre not using live instruments. theyre working witha diff set of infleunces and in a diff style. maybe youre viewing them in the wrong context. it would be like listening to someone like el-p from a native tongues standpoint.

i will grant you that not all their songs are very good, and a lot of them are well, boring, but there are at least 3-4 great ones on their album demo thing, that are GREAT. (theyre not the dilla-inspired ones).

apart from 3-5 songs (we both agreed on which those were already). most of the time though, they dont know how to write a song. theyre mostly just beats.

i think they could be great producers/instrumentalists but they shoulkd get a songwriting partner to work with them. then they'd be unstoppable.

all these lines about grabbing people's cocks and
>licking them from their ass to their crotch.

thank god for lyrics like that - or rather, thank god for lyrics like that in this artier context thats usually filled with the most mundane odes to positivism and whimsy (hello, jill scott, lizz fields, musiq, etc). and whats better is that they dsont sound like copies of hip hop rhymes either, theyre fun, daring, and weird but still 'good'.

by the way, the best sa ra songs are the ones that dump the soporific, boring, downtempo, plodding, going-nowwhere subtle mellowness for some timbo, neptunes, and kraftwerk influence )but done in the sa ra style, not copying).

exactly.... They have the hip hop context in a sense...but their music is rooted more in the type of funk that was done in the late 70's early 80's. Which gives their music, in my view a stronger base then stuff where folks are copying the hip hop rhymes...

its more playful, its not done with that sense of over-masculine aggression like in hip hop where nas says the mouth or the pussy that is the question. its kinda like old funk lyrics (but without being cheesy). the other thing is that theyre kinda pushing the limits, as far as talking about licking from the ass to the crotch - i mean, no one else is talking about that in R&B or neo soul today are they? thats why i like these lyrics! in fact, that ass-crotch lyric made me respct sa ra even more!

GTFOHWTstupidity. for the supposed hip hop generation, this board does have a rather large number of pussy-footers scared of anything negative.

that i feel the profanity (or rather, vulgarity) is unwarranted and it cheapens the listening experience

that kind of "frank talk" might have been fresh, bold and exciting when Rick James and Prince first did it, but now in the current climate where crassness is the norm (as you said) it just seems boring and unimaginative. it's the easy way out. everybody does it now, which was not the case 20 years ago now.

today, the fresh, bold and exciting thing would probably be to find a more "artful" way to let your freak flag fly.

and btw P-Funk was NEVER crass. they might have been freaky, but they were always artful and humorous in the way they expressed themselves.

I'm defending it as much as making a distinction as to how that type of language is used in their work compared to that of Cody...

1 corny...1 not..

now Mr. Ginuwine has come to be as corny as a cob....but...I must say that the songs on his first album were very good, and the use of sexualized language..like that on Pony didn't make me wretch...primarily because I thought it was a good song.

sees the ground swell of popularity that Sa Ra is getting, and the direction their taking that seems to be getting more acceptence then Mr. Cody did...so...he borrows a criticism of Cody to use on Sa Ra...

we should all just be glad we have artists like Cody or Sa Ra to bring us something different in Black music...

i think they're great and i'm not even knocking them for the lyrics, even if i'm not quite feeling them (just as i didn't feel the vulgarity on the first NERD album, which is a record you all know i loved)

i think it's a little corny, but hey... that's their thing. my question is more about why some people will accept this kinda puffery from Sa-Ra but call it "crass" if someone like Kellz does it.

i just want to understand the double standard.

as...CODY'S LYRICS, AT TIMES ARE HELLA CORNY AND PRETENTIOUS...

I mean how many times do I have to say it...it's really that simple...the only double standard is occuring because you're dismissing what I actually said...and chosing to make up your own reasoning as to why I didn't like Cody....Now it's that I don't like vulgar lyrics...but yet I like Sa-Ra...

but it still doesn't change the fact that I got a dick full of blood and an open heart...and thank you bitches for my money and thank you momma for whatever...That shizt is corny man..it sounded pretenious and fake...

it's really that simple...you could probably find a million songs that use some sexual stuff that I like...but the difference is....Cody was being a bit cornball to me...it was like...hey I'm making folk-hiphop...so let me get some street cred and talk about my dick being full of blood...lol.

I don't know...that shizt was just corny to me man..

Sa-Ra is funky...I'll wait till they actually release an album to judge their lyrics.

and R. Kelly...I'm sorry..I've thought his lyrics were friggin stupid when the dude came out with the video with the light head mike on....no diss to his fans...but I just have never been one....it's just dumbed down a bit much for me ....but he has done some stuff I like, and I respect his talent..it's just that he doesn't show it enough in my opinion....but that's probably having something to do with the industry right now...there is money in making dumbed down music for the mainstream.

i liked the 'smack your ass, pull your hair' in dangelo's left and right. its not crass but i liked erykahs' 'kiss me on my neck'. joi has done some good freaky/crass type stuff.

most of the 'progressive' ppl in neo soul or the type of stuff gilles peterson plays dont seem to like talking about sex, theyre almost uptight and take being 'positive' into holier than thou territory.

cos 'set your pussy on fire' is hardly as bad as some of the stuff ive heard in hip hop.

but it just sounded wrong in that song... especially since it came so early in the album. it sounded like trying too hard... like compensating for something. ditto "i fucked brown sugar behind the fiberglass window" and "the money, the pussy..." and all that.

it was just unnecessary, and it always hurt my ears in some way.

all too often rappers on R&B tracks does do exactly that but here i didnt really feel it. i thought the raps were kinda intrusive, and i wish they werent there (you can get a red/mthod-less version on the cd single), but the slightly overtly aggressive bent aside, i think the rhymes' content isnt that far off from d's lyrics. they never resort to horrible namecalling or being what id call derogatory (or dyou disagree?). theyre just more hardcore. and lets face it, some ppl like it hardcore.

i don't know if it was a matter of context, but they're rhymes on "left + right" seemed lewder to me than the rhymes on their own albums!

and i definitely think that their shit clashed with D's lyrics. the general temperament and content might not be that different from what D was singing, but sometimes it's not about WHAT you say but HOW you say it.

i think i really disliked "get the money, the pussy, the weed..." yeah, that's what really rubbed me the wrong way. i hate all those reductionist credos like "money, clothes, hoes" or "sports, drugs, entertainment" and stuff like that

how did i get in this? i was just quietly passin thru.

leave my ass and crotch outta this...for now

and grown people, lets not act like we ain't all done some freak nasty shit behind closed doors (or wherever else). this music is in fact grown folks music made by 3 grown ass men...very freak nasty grown ass men...

scorpion, i respect what you said earlier about the stage performance not believably reflecting the freakiness of the music (i think that's what you said, i could be wrong)...would the nastiness of the lyrics be better and more than just for shock value to you if the people singing them fit the "freak nasty" sex-symbol image?

what do you guys think of okps giving such 'earnest' feedback to sa ra's music?

do you think 'BITTER AND TWISTED HATERS!' or 'hmmmm, interesting' or 'who cares?'?

also, why dont you tell the other guys in the group that bitch would be way hotter/weirder/cleverer if you sung it!

this whole thing is interesting. i don't think anybody is hatin...everyone isn't going to like everything about Sa-Ra's music, and that's cool. The fact that people are thinking and talking about it so much is amazing.

any musical discussion is going to be open-ended and full of people's opinions, and that's great. we're all establishing some conversation about something we love so much, and that's admirable...no matter what's being said. "i'm way grown in my life..." to come in here and have my feelings hurt, dig?

...and in regards to me singin the song, I'll make that suggestion to the fellas at the next session )

well...there are a few levels to why yr friends lyrics appear more crass than tittilating(sp)....

as far as image is concerned when speaking on personal proclivities...it is important to be believable...

but in 2004, its very hard to do that...why?....because almost EVERYBODY claims to be "freaky" these days....

From Mya's ridiculously desperate claims of freakiness, to Tamia's forced nudity, to the clownish antics of Britney and Christina...and EVERY damn dude on the radio claims to be "freaky"

"freak this....freak that...lick this...lick that...."

the shit is just old and tired...to blatantly say "I wanna lick you from yr ass to yr crotch...." just aint sexy....

if pornography aint done right it cant be a turn-off....

when dealing with mature sexual subject matter, you need to have flair and an innate understanding of the erotic....

most of us will agree that "Funny How Time Flies" was more erotic than "Warmth"....

no one can teach you to be sexy, nothing you can put on or take off can make you sexy.....

Either you is or you aint, and everyody sexy aint sexy in the same way....same thing with the notion of cool...

context is a huge part of this....a drunk chick yanking up her shirt or some dude whipping his dick out without cause wont get nobody hot and bothered....

now if you were playing Truth or Dare or Strip Poker, the unsheated titties and/or dick would provide more of a charge...

basically, what Im saying is its all in the presentation....

going up to someone and saying "Let's fuck...." can either be offensive or extremely erotic....it aint the words, its how you say 'em....

this could get long....you see where Im going with this?

In response to Reply # 237

there's work being done constantly to further improve and perfect the sound. making music is a process, as i'm sure you understand. the guys are working hard to create some really impactful shit. it may not reach everybody...no single piece of art will. and that's alright...

it's been said by others on the board, this CDR in question is not a full representation of SRCP's artistic potential. The real shit has yet to be released and heard by many of you, so all these debates may be a little premature.

but, that takes me back to what i said earlier...the fact that anything by the Creative Partners is in everyone's ears and mouths is quite amazing.

and with all that said, I will now resign from my position as SRCP's PR person, and remain a regular citizen of OKP boards

(and i'm glad u liked the boots!)

just because you happen to be SRCP's head cheerleader

it's all good... look, i think most of the people in this post like their music. but that doesn't mean that we unconditionally love every single thing about it. and i think it's cool that we hav this forum to express the ways in which we think they can improve (and even cooler than some of said artists actually read this board).

we WANT to see them do well... maybe they might agree with some of our criticisms and take a lead from them. maybe they might respectfully disagree and keep on doing what they're doing.

but in the end, it's all about the LOVE of the music... not the hate.

Considering i could be considered one of the "srcp cheerleaders" here on okp, i figured id chime in. I really think cats need to wait until sa-ra got some released, finished material out b4 they start to tear 'em down. Most of the tracks that people on here are refering to are from a 17 track demo that even i think is somewhat weak, and is definetly not the reason i became a fan. They are not even really sa-ra material, since one of those tracks has already been sold to Bilal (the hollywood hollywood one), so its obvious that the demo was more of a beat tape and the lyrics they put on the tracks were jus done for reference. And in regards to the lyrics that are on the demo, if u dont think "make u bust nuts on frequencies" is dope i cant do nothin for ya man, no homo.

In response to Reply # 0

Cody has a completely different tone than Sa-Ra. cody sounds like a negro making excuses for being kind of stuck on instant gratification. he fancies himself a pimp and speaks as if there is magic emanating from his dick. truth is, in 2004 negros with a whole lot less can talk there way into som pussy being completely honest. so cody just ends up sounding like any dude that wants to get some "one night love" and isn't aware that it isn't a feat of awe to accomplish this these days.

Sa-ra feels more like they are encouraging the freak in all of us to be let loose. They don't even sound provacative to me, but in 2004 where you cannot shock people with content anymore, they sound more to me like they are just encouraging everyone to be honest and let the freak flow. you cannot encapsulate the lewdness of the music into one or two little lines.

by the way, i keep spotting elise nigel (is that her name or how you spell it) around town. i wonder how freaky she is?

149. "what's clever, exciting or funny about 'be my bitch'?"
In response to Reply # 0

i mean, apart from the fact that it is a pretty grimy, well-written tune from a MUSICAL perspective. i actually like the song quite a bit, but the lyrics... i dunno. they don't offend me or even cause me to erupt in fits of laughter, but they...

let's be serious: for those of you who are likening this kind of thing to P-Funk's "freakiness," let's compare this to Funkadelic's "be my beach":

"she's a lot of fun, she likes to come on much too strong
she's a lot of fun, think that she's the only freak been born
as a matter of fact, she's not the only sand at the beach
or to be exact, there's a whole lot of beaches"

there's a level of wordplay there, of cleverness and wit that you're not getting in "be my bitch"... and the fact that it was rare to hear this kind of talk in an R&B song in 1975 has to be factored in as well.

today, in 2004 we've heard scores and scores of casually misogynistic songs calling women bitches for what? 15 years now? to be honest, i think this song would have been slightly more interesting - but only *slightly* - had it been sung with a female lead vocal. as it is, it ain't offensive but it's uninspired. "be my bitch"? that's the best you can come up with?

and then SOMEBODY gonna turn around and say that "i push my seed in her bush for life" is **pretentious**? i mean, at least it uses METAPHORS... and i'm not saying the song is particularly "deep," but at least the dude tried to express himself above a level of "i stick my dick in that ass tonight," which he very well could have said.

but this ain't about Cody, or holding him up as a standard of anything... i just think that some of you are being extremely dishonest here.

but where the music is so forward-thinking and the lyrics so uninspired, i think it makes the whole thing sound like a song parody... and not a particularly funny one either.

it's kinda like those little P-Funk song parodies NWA had, like "my automobile" and "i'd rather fuck with you"... but that was over a decade ago (they were also a lot funnier, and that matters because i think SRCP WERE trying to be funny here... i hope so, anyway)

the lyrics are kinda like old 'freaky' funk songs - i mean, were the ohio players leaders of chivalry? i dont think so. i also dont think this song is misogynistic. its more like sexual role play. 'he says i dont want to wife you, but can you be my bitch?' so its acknowledged that there are other types of women there, not just bitches. and hes not even saying 'you ARE MY bitch', hes asking. its like when you call a girl 'a bad bitch' during sex, its not the same as 'you fucking bitch' in a heated argument. plus, the vocals dont have any menace to them, theyre not intimidating, or rough, or aggressive, theyre like sexual invites, not proclamations where the girl might as well not be there, or where shes just a sperm receptable for the rapper to do what he wants.

just boring

i mean, i GET what is being said... and i'm cool with it. but why does it have to be the hook? and the way that hook is pronounced like there's a big punchline in it, punctuated with a Too Short "beeeyatch!"

it's old. it's been done. ad nauseam.

it's just kinda uninspired to me.

what you think about sa ra's bitch song, is what i feel about cody randomly, completely pointlessly, needlessly inserting the thank you bitches line in serve this royalty (never mind bitch im broke, where theres a certain glee to the word and cussing the woman out). in STR, it really did sound like it was just thrown in for the sake of it.

it's not the same as "be my bitch" because the "bitch" ain't the punchline... it was part of it, but the alleged brokeness was more the joke.

it sounded like something Richard Pryor would say, rather than a diminished version of a P-Funk lyric

but he's still head and shoulders above a lot of cats, as far as i'm concerned.

these Lesson haters have a hard time accepting that because Cody tends to worship at the altar of The Faces and The Animals rather than at the shrine of P-Funk and Sly Stone. that's cool.

that much being said, if i was gonna edit THM into a single disc, "bitch i'm broke" would be one of the first songs i cut. but it's still kinda funny. i mean, the verses? come on...

i always hear 70s stuff like stevie, EWF or p-funk or all the gigantic funk bands of the 70s mentioned on okp, i dont really see much love for stax, motown, earlier R&B, solomon burke (who you were sort of right about, sounding quite like a country singer) or any of that here. and from what i know, cody is as much a fan of 60s R&B and soul as he is of 60s R&R, though it might be a bit more on the latter.

After talking to him on more than one occasion, hearing him live and newer material, observing him with his fans and listeners, it's clear to me that the "bitch i'm broke" days are behind him, and he's found a much more divine inspiration in his music and his lyrics.

I doubt if we will ever hear those few 'type' tracks from Headphone Masterpiece again.

but i'll still cherish them.

(havent heard Sa-Ra yet tho) sounds interesting.

kind of like all of those Made men advertisements in the Source before they released an album....lol..but with there actually being a legitimate reason for the hype.

very much looking forward to the Sa Ra official album...

i feel Afkap on this one...

but ironically, what he's saying is to some extent an indictment of both him and Warren. there's a lot of hypocrisy w/ the SaRa fans i've been seeing...

1) slamming NERD for the lack of musicianship displayed when most of these pre-album SaRa tracks have very little musicianship to my ear. yeah, they're complex (as in filled w/ much sound). but that doesn't make them evidence of musical talent...NERD make great music on very little musical ability. SaRa may have ability, but so far it's not being displayed...so they definitely on a level playing field w/ Chad & Skateboard P.

2) slamming Cody for his obscenity/profanity/whatever-y, & yet heartily embracing SaRa's (albeit enjoyable) crassness? it DEFINITELY is an image thing here, cuz the strongest argument Warren's given has been "Cody sounds corny doing it. SaRa doesnt" which is ridiculous to me 'cuz even the very statements SaRa have been using sound corny in themselves...there's no artifice, no art at all in lines like that...it's a blatant translation from reality to art, to the point where one would wonder if such lyricism IS art. Cody tries to do things w/ language. as a writer, as a poet, i appreciate that heartily...SaRa just takes pillowtalk & puts it to music. now if that's yr thing, cool (i'm definitely feeling SOME of these tracks, so i ain't here to complain), but don't call Cody corny for actually using his brain rather than his phallus to come up w/ lyrics...

please.

& let's dispense w/ the "oh, it's not a real album" talk, b/c like it has already been mentioned, these are songs they made of their own volition & made to completion, to the extent that they perform them in public & endorse them as uninhibited products of their own work.

it's definitely valid to draw comparisons...

I thought Fly or Die was a great album...I still listen to it on the regular. If there was ever any thing negative I said about Nerd's first album....well for one I didn't like it very much....certainly not as much as this album. But the other thing...Af was acting as if their first album was like one of the greatest albums ever...making some pretty wild comparisons....so anything negative I said about them...was in response to some outrageous claims about an average album.

>
>2) slamming Cody for his obscenity/profanity/whatever-y, &

agin...it's not the profanity that I was critisizig Cody for...the profanity was just part of the example of the real critisism.....his corny pretentious sounding lyrics. Corny, pretenious sounding lyrics is the critism....the examples of this involve some profanity.

Now again...I haven't got a problem with Cody...his album was alright. ......but when someone is again making just completely outrageous statements about an average album....my response is going to seem like an attack on the artist, but it's not....it's just a counter to the craziness of saying the guy is a savior for soul music....the last of the real bluesmen....a better song writer then Prince.....again...i'm not going to give any new artist that much dap....

Pretty much about Sa-Ra...all i've said is their funky...and their sound is a refershing change from what's going on now...I didn't come on here saying that Sa-Ra is better then P-funk...Sa-Ra is the second coming....or when I was saying I liked Martin Luther's music much better than Cody's...I wasn't saying Martin Luther was the next Jimi Hendrix...(like someone said about Cody)......I mean I ain't that easy....If I like it I like it...but an artist has a loooooooooooooong way to go before I start putting them in that type of status.

.there's no artifice, no art at all in lines
>like that...it's a blatant translation from reality to art,
>to the point where one would wonder if such lyricism IS art.

one person's art is another person's boo-boo.....whatis art and what is not is totally 1000% Subjective.

>Cody tries to do things w/ language. as a writer, as a poet,
>i appreciate that heartily..

that's fine. What he's trying to do with language on occasion has come across as pretentious and corny. Seems out of place in the general picture of what he's doing. But that's just me...again to someone else it may seem like genius.

.SaRa just takes pillowtalk &
>puts it to music. now if that's yr thing, cool (i'm
>definitely feeling SOME of these tracks, so i ain't here to
>complain), but don't call Cody corny for actually using his
>brain rather than his phallus to come up w/ lyrics...

wait a minute..Cody Chestnutt seems to be friggin obsessed with his phallus on some of them songs. And yes...I'm calling it corny...because it sounds corny to me...the manner in which he's doing it sounds pretentious....being that I was not present when the man made the music, I can't tell you what he used ..but whatever he used.....to me...it was cornball. Now again, I am but one person with an opinion....some others I've discussed Cody's music with share my opinion...others do not. Again...what's deep lines to one..is rubbish to another. That's just how it goes. Cody's a talented cat...maybe the next album will be one that I like more....

>
>please.
>
>& let's dispense w/ the "oh, it's not a real album" talk,
>b/c like it has already been mentioned, these are songs they
>made of their own volition & made to completion

hold it a second. You're assuming that they made them to completion. This is the problem. Folks are accepting something...because they want to...not because they know it's true. If even the artists themselves have told you that this is not an album...and these aren't complete songs...and some of what is on there has been sold to other artists...Why would you insist on believing other wise?

I have like a bazillion Prince bootlegs that have been released as if they were complete albums....songs on those albums have surfaced on actual Prince recordings, or on albums of other artists....what good would it have done to judge the demo....

I would be like comparing the Voodoo tour concert to the Prince Sign of the times rehersal CDs.....saying, "Prince stopped the song during the begining and told the band to pay attention....D'Angelo didn't do that in concert" one is an actual Concert and one is a rehersal....

it's just not the same thing....and it's based on an assumption "the songs were completed" that is just not true....

, to the
>extent that they perform them in public & endorse them as
>uninhibited products of their own work.

>it's definitely valid to draw comparisons...

comparing demos and completed officially releasd albums are not a valid comparison...and are only being made now by folks that wish to pour some water on the heat that Sa-Ra is generating with the CDrs that are circulating...

when their album is released, we can compare it to Headphone masterpiece, or whatever else

which of all the songs I’ve heard is probably my favorite. when afrobongo sent it to me I said that I liked it because it sounded so deliciously decadent and coke-addled. I got that just from listening to the music, y’know?

now I took time to listen to the words and they’re actually singing about doing cocaine in a fairly prosaic fashion… maybe it’s just me (and it probably is) but that kinda spoils it for me

the music speaks volumes… I think they should let it continue to do so
