"I need DSLR Camera Help, Famz & Foez"

Peace,

I'm trying to get one of them fancy cameras. I got a budget of about 800-1000 and I was eyeballing the Nikon D3100 joint but it's mad small in my hands though.

I also liked the Canon EOS Rebel T2i.

But the Nikon D90 also had me interested.

It's far too many choices in the DSLR game. What's a safe bet for a hobbyist with SOME aspirations to get a little serious from time to time?

the issues with the sound on that cam don't bother me because i would use the external mic option anyway. the d90 was going to be my backup but my employer has one i can use anytime. consider getting a refurbished d90 body on amazon and using the savings on a decent lens or two, like the fixed 50mm 1.8 and a wide angle zoom.

the sig has some shots, most of which shot with a d70 and d300, and with sigma 15-30mm wide angle and nikon 80-200mm 2.8 lenses. the 50mm 1.4 lens is getting portrait work with muses!!

the T2i is better but the differences are slight enough that it really wont matter in the end. the money you save can be put to a good lens

i got my used body off ebay for $300 and just bought my 3rd new lens last week. its really not a crime to buy a used body, but you may need to get the light sensor cleaned. i'd reccomend you always get new lenses tho.

don't be tempted to get the 55-300 telephoto as part of the kit - if you really need a telephoto for sports or wildlife you'd probably be better off with the 70-300 or better instead. It really comes down to whether you prefer Nikon or Canon, but when I got into it I thought the Nikon menu system was more intuitive and the grip was more comfortable.

ken rockwell's site is a good place to start, but he has a lot of weird opinions - from setting the color setting to vivid for everything to never shooting raw files. i used to swear by the site, but now that i've learned more about photography i take what he says with a grain of salt. the photo.net forums are a good spot to ask questions and stuff.

edit - i have the d90 and love it, but really the only reason to buy it over the d3100 that i can think of is that it autofocuses older (non-af-s) lenses. it should be due for a replacement soon though, so you might want to wait a month or so and see what pops up.

is that it's not a replacement for a consumer video camera or even a point and shoot - autofocus is loud (you can hear it grinding on the built-in mic) and slow and uses a shitty contrast-based method instead of the main AF sensors that are built into your camera. It's best when you're not changing focus at all, or when you're manually "pulling" between fixed planes you want to be in focus on like they do in Hollywood films.

Check out this DJ Spinna/Homeboy Sandman/P.SO/Fresh Daily video and the making of video and you'll see how the video mode can really be dope when it's used right.

its about 3 years old but it's a serious piece of gear. it was one of the best selling bodies so you can get one at around 500-700 (i paid 650 for my body in great condition from adorma used). it has no video, which is totally fine with me, I dont care to shoot video, only great images. Sure it is an aps-c sized sensor, sure it only has 10.4 mp and sure its not so great past ISO 1600, but its a damn fine camera

here is an example of my work and what i have done with the 40d

i was thinking about the Nikon but i can't find anyone with a good enough review to justify it. Plus if you know more people with Canon's (as i do) you can borrow some of their lens when you need to.

Only because I got a good good deal though. As a beginner, it's serving it's purpose for me right now.

The good thing is that I.S. is in the body, so I can pretty much use any lens I want (with an adapter of course).

I also like the size which makes it more likely that i'll carry it with me and actually practice a lot more than I would with a larger DSLR.

don't buy an old camera. A few people here are telling you to buy bodies that are 3 or more years old, but the technology on these bitches improves so fast that it's usually not worth it unless you get a beast of a deal, imo. It's not like lenses where the thing doesn't change for five years and the changes aren't that serious. The bodies get better every year and by a lot.

Also, don't let people tell you that low-light sensitivity (high iso performance) isn't important. it's probably the most important thing to consider if you shoot indoors a lot.

Bought a Sony A230 a few months ago and though I love it, shooting indoors with it I automatically have to push my ISO all the way up to 1600 even with the aperture down to 2.5 and shutter speed at 1/60s. It's tough to keep things sharp at those settings and it doesn't help that the 230 starts to get noticeably noisy at 1600.

Can't wait for full frames to become the norm.

The 40D may not shoot video (which could be a deal breaker for some), however, it's a fast, top notch cam imo. Feels (literally) more pro, than pro-am...especially when compared to the Rebel series (which I shot with previously). I've been shooting with it for about 3 years now.

anyway, here are a couple digi-cam review sites that you should check out. two of my favorites:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/canon/
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php

sidenote: I actually have a backup (new) 40D kit that I've been planning to sale for a while now. Just haven't had time to put in on eBay. Not sure which route you'll end up going in the end (Canon/Nikon), but if it's Canon, and it's the 40D...get at me.

it up to the DSLR.... I went with Nikon, and that's because I didn't want a Canon due to the fact that it was the more popular brand. I went with what I thought was the under dog. I currently shoot with a D5000, but I really want that D7000. That shit has 39 focus points son... What's fucking with that.....?

Plus you're gonna want to shot video...great looking video.

The only problem is that the T2i, like the 60D, and 7d, are cropped images and not full frame.

Here's a visual example with different lenses.

http://vimeo.com/14832168

The T2i also doesn't have as many variable isos as its big brothers.

you can have the best camera body in the world, but if you stick a garbage lens on the front, you're not gonna like the end result. It's the lens that actually creates the image, everything else on the camera is just doing its best to not make the image worse.

It's the upgrade to the D90.

D3100 is nice, but won't autofocus with a lot of lenses. You'd have to just buy AF-S lenses, which tend to be more expensive. The D90/D7000 and above have built in AF motors so you can use AF-D lenses like the cheap 50mm 1.8.

I sold a lens to some freak off of Craigslist and when he came to test out the lens he brought his D7000 with him. I asked him if I could test it out and it felt great. I HAVE to get that camera, with those 39 auto focus points too...? Man oh man...

the d7000 will be next for me when possible, at this time anyway. for an ambitious beginner the d90 does much of the same for way less.

Even shooting in RAW, I can't imagine I'll ever max out this 8gb card in one outing. I'm not sure I'd even want to....that'd be well over 1000 pics right?

Or, one card with a small 4GB Eye-Fi card and the other with a 16GB card.

Or both with 64GB cards and don't worry about running out of space.

1000s of pictures, sure, but how much 1080p video, eh?

The dual slots is nice because you can have each one do something else, or you can just use em for overflow when shooting long videos. It's also handy because you can put pics on a cheap 2GB card and give me to clients right away.

I have a D300s, which has a CF slot and and SD slot. It's part of the reason I stuck with Nikon and didn't go for Canon's 7D (that, plus 51 auto focus points is oh so sweet). Even though it only shoots 720p, videos can eat up a ton of space very quickly.

In response to Reply # 70

the d7000 is a much better and more expensive camera (almost double the price) with a lot more professional features. for someone just starting out the d3100 is plenty, and it shoots 1080p video. if you shoot in low light and want a lot of depth of field (having everything in sharp focus; the opposite of the video you posted) then it might be worth it to spring for the d7000.

as far as a lens, in order to get the look they have in that video you want a really shallow depth of field, which means a low f stop - probably around 2.8. The kit lens probably isn't going to let you get that look in most situations. There are two lenses that will work on the d3100 that are a real value - the 35 mm f/1.8 prime (i.e., not a zoom), and the 50 mm f/1.4 prime. The 35 mm feels like a "normal" lens - not a telephoto or a wide angle, and feels like your subject isn't being magnified. The 50 feels like a short portrait lens on these cameras, so it's gong to look a little magnified, but it's going to be more flattering if you're shooting people.

check post 11 if you want to know a little bit more about the limitations of slr video. also, a lot of people that shoot slr use a shotgun or other directional mic since the built-in one isn't really the best.

cheap and warrantied, with kind of similar video quality to those far more expensive models (see kenrockwell.com) a good lens would be a fixed one (like 35mm or 50mm) with a wide apeture (such as f1.4 or f1.8). a cheap and decent one is the nikon 50mm f1.8 at $125.

look up the blog californiaisaplace for some nice d-slr video examples too.

the last terminator movie, for example, had scenes that were shot with the 5DmkII. A grip of other movies and TV shows have been shot with Canons. That's because they're better, and pros know this.

Actually, in general you should take everything ken rockwell says with massive grains of salt. he's the photographic equivalent of a glenn beck or any other loud mouth that says outrageous things. Still, the D7000 is an excellent camera and you'll have a lot of fun with it.

I sometimes randomly click on the profiles of users who are commenting on the photos of others. I've found some of the most amazing photographers way. If it's cool, I'll add you as contact.

for that budget, buy used! from KEH.com
I'd look into a 5dmk1 or a 40d. actually just get the 40d and a 50mm 1.8

iso performance is important, but dont get too hung up on the specs. get a camera
that inspires you to shoot. screw the numbers

I shoot fashion...see http://www.jondionowens.com

It puts a bit of a wrench because it's a really affordable camera, that t3i. Still, I fell in love with the D7000 after snapping with it.
