H2 wins if you play both now...the gameplay in Goldeneye is kinda dated. I think when they came out, most people saw Goldeneye as the better game (a lot of people were disappointed with H2).
Since Rare made a much more recent shooter in Perfect Dark Zero, wouldn't it be more fair to compare that and H2?

Imho, its still tops.
The giddy fun of it still tops most console fps, including Halo 2. When was the last time in Halo you had the same feeling as getting trapped in the bathroom with three dudes outside literally killing each other for the right to kill you, with remote mines outside waiting to rain death.

the way you could hit different body parts, the way you had time to line up a shot with the R button, the way you could easily strafe round opponents, the way a pistol actually felt deadly, was perfect
in all FPS games since, they may have implemented some of these things but none of it has come off properly
the halo one player shooting isn't that good what makes it amazing is 1. the vehicles 2. the AI teammates
fighting the flood? honestly, pretty wack
oh, and Halo2 also fails to get round the pink gay looking alien level syndrome. all GE's levels looked cool
of course, with Xbox live, you can't really say it's not a greater multiplayer experience than GE. you can play it all day and not get bored.

Oh well, vehicles and jumping(which im not a big fan of in anything close to a realistic fps).
Halo is supersolid and balanced multiplayer...but there's nothing about it that screams spectacular. Goldeneye still beats it in the weapons department, and if my memory serves me right has a wider variety of game types(even tho you can customize halo)

When Golden Eye dropped it was one of it's first kind for a home console. The controls were great and it played great. Was it a better game than Halo 2 today? HELL NO. Dual wielding? The sheer amount of weapons? Come on. Golden Eye was that crack back in '98. But compare it with Halo 2 and the amount of options, depth, etc that it has, Halo 2 wins hands down. I played Golden Eye to death and loved every minute of it. We use to have dorm competitions and what not across Clark, Morehouse, and Morris Brown. But if we had a game like Halo 2 back then? Sheeit, some of us would have never graduated. I've played Halo 2 in the last year more than probably any game I've played in the last 10 years outside of the Tekken series. Yes, Golden Eye was a great game and was cocaine, but dammit Halo 2 is that crack that'll have you like Tyrone Biggums.

My friends were going nuts over that I game back in the day so I went over to check it out. What can I say -- I was not impressed. I'd already played Doom 2 over my 28.8 modem, and had ridiculous fun just 1v1'ing my friend. I'd also played Quake, where you can free look with the mouse at all times, and things felt *much* more 3D and expansive, instead of the Doom 2+ that Goldeneye felt like.
I realize that it set the bar for multiplayer options and respect it for that, but then online PC mod communities have expanded upon all that themselves.
Goldeneye "greatness" is largely founded upon it being the first really successful CONSOLE fps. As a fps there were lots of games doing similar, similarly fun things all at the same time.

The point of my post is that Goldeneye is grossly overrated because it was the first successful fps on a console. Anyone (<--- read "me") who had been playing PC fps's before Goldeneye knew it wasn't anything to get too excited about. Everyone on here calling it a great fps shooter is only saying that because they were only playing consoles, and not all the games available at the time.
I hate Goldeneye. Having been introduced to REAL fps's on the PC, I couldn't stand being able to look around freely. Someone above you and you wanna shoot at them? Oh yeah -- you gotta stand still and look around like an ass while anyone can take shots at you like a sitting duck. Someone below you? Ditto. It was pure garbage coming from Quake.
Until consoles had dual analog I would touch a fps on them, meaning Halo 2 is a better game simply based on that alone.
Even with Halo's mutli console attachment and internet play, Goldeneye was the one that really fathered console shooting and multiplaying on consoles like that. I know that if you asked people about which one do they remeber playing more, its Goldeneye. Everyone had played it before...both Halos arent as universal to play.

I gave Goldeneye the vote out of nostalga. But Halo is a monster on that Mutltiplayer at times. Goldeneye is good cause anyone can hop on a play and enjoy it overall. Halo 2 takes some skill this the recoil of the guns and such so you have to improve your skill. Only think I loved about Goldeneye was learning how to throw the remote mines and detonate them in the air

the human brain is capable of getting used to slower frame rates it's as simple as that when i played GE, it was the PAL version so straight away it was 17% slower than what you're used to and we played 4 people most times, with at least 4 bots, sometimes 8 and i know that would give some of you fucking nosebleeds but it was fine
and who the hells said Goldeneye was more like Doom 2+ whereas Quake had "truly expansive 3D graphics"
bull and shit. in GE you actually thought of your enemies as 3 dimensional models of humans, that you could attack from different directions and hit on different bodyparts, not just generic blobs who are always facing you and always react to your bullets the same way, or DON'T react when you hit them with a pistol as if it was a water gun, which is what they are in practically every FPS since GE (except PD)

I swear, I played it for an entire week during last years christmas break with all my friends who are Halo2 junkies and after about an hour picked up on it and was competitive right along with them, but when there is basically no point to being a good shot and mofos will just run in guns blazzing without a care in the world, whats the skill in the game? NOTHING compares to magnum/sniperriffle Goldeneye.
