This is one of my favorite game series of all time. I think I played seasons with every single team on the first two versions, some teams more than one season. We had leagues going with the first SNES version and TSB III in college. Man that shit was fun.
More about each game: The original Tecmo Bowl only had four plays per team, no real NFL season, limited team selection. All passes were either complete, or intercepted IIRC.
The next version (TSB on NES) was probably the most played and most popular. Full seasons, stats, etc.
The first SNES version of TSB was very similar, but with better graphics and some minor tweaks. IIRC it also introduced trading. Not sure what else changed, besides rosters.
I've never even seen TSB II Special Edition.
The main difference with TSB III Final Version was that it had created players that you could power up. After numerous seasons, I eventually had a DE that was a god, with virtually all 100s.

You had to be extra careful to turn your controller away so your buddy wasn't looking at your hands.
And did you ever break one after they had the right play call? (And by "break one" in this context I mean cross the line of scrimmage.) I think I actually got a first down with Sweetness once.
My favorite was when I'd use the Raiders just to get Bo Jackson, and then I'd go for 60, 70 yards -- whatever -- and right when I got to the endzone I'd turn around and head the other direction down the field just to mess with my buddy. One time I think I actually got to my endzone, back to my opponent's endzone, and then up to my endzone again. It was awesome.

Yeah, I turned the controller sideways with my brother but not my friends. Gotta know who to trust. lol

Yeah, a couple times I got gains on picked runs. The best though was that on pass plays, you could still complete for gains on those plays that had the curl route at the end if you timed it just right, because the defender would be behind you.

Bo was so nasty. I don't think I ever did what you did though, I would just dance around in circles near the end zone.
On Tecmo Super Bowl, I could run out an entire quarter with Cunningham, just running around in the backfield dodging defenders, before finally running for a gain or passing the ball. Shit was funny.

Before the 1991 version, you couldn't play an entire full season on ANY sports title. Not basketball, baseball, nothing. In fact, the ability to play w/ as many users in the season was ahead of it's time. Many sports titles after that only allowed ONE user to do so.
Yeah, the 1991 version is the best version because it was leaps and bounds ahead of the previous versions and it helped usher in the simulation sports titles of today. The 16-bit versions of Tecmo were technically better, but they weren't more innovative than the 1991 title. I remember the Genesis version had better graphics and the ability to do a RB "jump over the pile" play, but other than that it was just an upgrade.
Tecmo Super Bowl is not only one of the greatest sports games, but one of the greatest NES titles of all time.

Nothing like Chicago in the original TB. I still can't figure why many people preferred Nintendo's diagonal view POS football game.
