"The Hard Drive Storage Post"

Check it...I'm at the point where I need more storage.

The days when I could squeak past with a 80GB hard drive are long gone.

I need something fast....reliable...with about 150-200GB of space...and not too expensive.

I'm looking thru these sites looking for deals...

Let me know of ANY deals you may know of...what brands to check for...etc.

FYI...I'm running on a 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon 64 processor...I only have one HD (80GB) and a DVD burner hooked up...so I have plenty of IDE space...hence the request for an internal. Plus...I'm strapped for dough...so externals are no go unless they are under $150.

They had the drive on sale for $109.50. It was one of the drives reviewed...and while its a bit slower than the best performers...casual users like myself will never see the difference.

Plus...Seagate has a reputation for quiet drives...and that for me is a must.

An AMD64 based computer will more than likely have support for SATA so you should be good.

In response to Reply # 0

I'm using my Archos to record all of the DVDs I rent and I need more storage ASAP. My PC was built (1.5/ AMD Athlon/ 1gb ram/ 40gb HD) and I don't want to spend too much on a PC that only cost me 3 bills.. I have a 120gb external connected to it now and it's 92% full. I pulled a 10gb HD from an old PC and installed it Sunday. My brother has a 80gb internal he pulled from a server set-up and I want to install it also.

Can I have 3 internal HDs and 1 external on one PC?

your motherboard has.

as far as spending money on a computer that u didn't pay much for.... if u buy a new hard drive to put in that comptuer, there is nothing stoppingyour from taking that drive out and putting it in a new computer whenever u get one.

I've had experiences of where I installed to many internal devices and it taxed my system power. But if your supply is aa higher rated one you should be in good shape.

Ok...typical of me...I had no idea that there was a difference between SATA and PATA setups. The Drive I have on the PC now is PATA.

I just did the knowledge to my Motherboard...which is only about 2 years old. It does support SATA connections...but I'm pretty sure the drive I have in their now is the old school IDE connect.

What do I have to do to get this new hard drive to work? Oh...FYI...this is my motherboard.

But I wasn't able to recall off the top of my head whether my power supply had the right connections for Serial. So...I called back and switched to an Ultra 100 HD from Western Digital. Not as quiet...but comparable and...even better....CHEAPER!

If you on a 64-based chip then you prolly have SATA on your board.

Go for somethin SATA (150) minimum 7200rpm, pref. w/8-16MB buffer.

That site is my primary thoroughfare when it comes to puter hardware.

I have a 2.0ghz Dell Dimension 4550. The second HD is filling up with a capacity of 80GB. I want around 250GB, I have IDE connections. What can I get for this drive to be the 2nd drive. SATA, PATA, Ultra ATA, 7200, 5200rpm, all this shit doesn't really make sense to me, nor do I know exactly what to get.

A quiet HD would be nice tho.

Thanks.

I'm getting this baby right hurr: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=102648-1

They also have 160gb and 200gb models. Of course, if you don't have a Mac, you probably don't need a firewire port. They have USB-only drives for less money.

I'm a big fan of Zip Zoom Fly: they have really great prices and free FedEx 2-day shipping.

fat32 can be read by jsut about any operating system. windows, linux, osx, and so on.

ususally when u buy them they'll say on the box something aobut being compatible with windows and macs. that's all it means.

41. "be careful with using fat32 and windows..."
In response to Reply # 34

I bought a Lacie and formatted it with fat32. I never have any problems with it on Macs and for the large part it works fine with my PC. But, if I start or restart my PC with the Lacie plugged in, Windows does something where it wants to check the files and removes shit for some reason, I think it removes files it assumes are corrupted or something. I lost some really important files I saved from a Mac so now I just always make sure the drive is off until windows is fully loaded.

If there's a way to stop windows from doing this, I'd love to know.

Mech

You do have to cop the SATA connection for the motherboard but once you get that and you install it's smooth sailing. My SATA drive is my baby. It saved me from my last crash. Most of my stuff was on there already especially my music. Now I basically put everything on there and keep my master drive free.

38. "Notebook hard drive --- Is newegg reliable? --- Knoppix is cool."
In response to Reply # 0

The hard drive is completely toast. It doesn't even show up in the BIOS. I want to install a new hard drive, but I'm not sure what online stores are reliable? Right now I'm leaning towards newegg, but I've never bought anything from them? They have a couple of OEM drives, like 40 GB for $65. Is that a price I can beat?

Well, since the hard drive is done, I decided to burn Knoppix, and run it off the CD. It's pretty cool. If things get too tight around here, I may use this as an alternate OS.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

I think I'm going to just start having half of my paycheck direct deposited to NewEgg. It's just easier that way.
