Cool shit:
That OLED touch panel is fucking sick.
4 USB C ports is good.
They kept the headphone jack so that's nice.
Better display sounds useful.

Wack shit:
No MagSafe. That thing has saved my ass many times.
No SD card slot. I use my MBP mostly for photo editing and that shit is hella convenient.
Price. $1800 for the touch panel jawn? Man, I could buy decent camera for that.
No touch screen.

I'm gonna just stick to my MBP. I do hope they update the wireless keyboard with that OLED screen. I'd pay $200 for that.

Bigger trackpads. I love that. Macbooks have had big touch pads for years, and not even bigger.

My mom has a cheap ass Toshiba that has a trackpad the size of a small post it note.

Bad:
Storage still to low. 256GB as base? Should be 512 and 1tb tiers. And the 2TB option is fucking way way way overpriced should be an extra $700 not $1200.

Radeon Pro 460 good for everything - except gaming.

Only 3 real ports - the 4th is power. So that's 1 less than 2014 - which has two Thunderbolt and two USB 3 + Magsafe.

No HDMI - which was nice when visiting relative's houses.

I'm not upgrading my 15" 2014 with 512 and 2 graphic chips.

sure you can get adapters, but it hikes up the cost. an HDMI / DP out is STILL so useful, and direct connections are available universally

and the fact that most current mbp/iphone owners have NO usb-c cables (because they never needed them) makes a complete lack of usb-a ports silly.

yeah, they got to have more battery space, make em skinner, etc. but it's like c'moooon.

My 2014 has nearly the same geek bench score.

I use mine on a desktop with external keyboard and external monitor so the Retina screen improvements don't matter for me very often.

And that makes the Touchbar almost completely unused.

Sure, the new machine's SSD and RAM are way faster but 2014's is fast enough for what I do.
If my machine was stolen or completely broken then maybe - but it's not compelling enough for me now.

I think most PC manufactures are in this dilemma - the processor improvements are lagging so the replacement cycle is getting longer.A 2014 MacBook has a good screen, fast enough SSD, and nearly as fast of a processor - but can be had for as little as $1100 for a used one in perfect condition.

The only reason I got the 2014 over the 2012 I had was USB 3.0 - that was an improvement worth the upgrade.

Single-Core Score Multi-Core Score
2016: 4283 13089
2014: 4158 13717

Plus the UI, but with Utility and browser, was simple and the hardware stayed up and works. Meanwhile, Netgear is still out there taking dumps in boxes.

I've had one Express for over 8 years now, I think, and it's still rock solid. Also, the UI is so simple that my 70 year old parents, who have (for some unknown reason) 4 expresses and one time capsule, can set up and navigate them perfectly without calling me every other day. Going to miss that.

Turns out the new CPU and smaller battery works well for "light use" but really sucks when using the CPU a lot.

Turns out the new CPU has similar power profile as the old one when under load - but they cut the battery capacity by 25%.

The thing is beautiful - I was not expecting that.

It's the same way the 12' Macbook seemed dumb on paper but awesome in person.

The track pad is huge and great.
The screen look way better than my 2014 Macbook Pro.
The thinness is crazy. I didn't think I'd care - but it's way better looking and feels way smaller.

All the criticism about battery life being less and the keyboard being worse and the touch bar being a gimmick still and being down a port still stand.

If your around an Apple Store or Best Buy check it out in person - it's a super impressive piece of machinery.

I get that it's been less reliable with the new chips, but it is what it is, an estimate.

You got an hour left of web browsing or 40 minutes of rendering, just say I got the 40 minutes. A decision like that just seems so lazy it makes me wonder what other corners they've cut we haven't noticed in an effort to look perfect.

His example is:
"I need to know, that if I open chrome, while I'm resizing these pics, do I have an hour of battery life left?"

Showing a battery percentage that decreases is what Apple moved to, and I think it's the most logical and reliable way to report it.

But that doesn't solve his problem (which seems like a very common and logical use case.)

"That If i open Chrome"
can be a single tab or loading 40 tabs. And they way that Chrome is coded that will have drastically different effects on battery life. If 40 tabs are open with a flash animations and processes that are transmitting and receiving data often and loaded up with JavaScript then you may have much less battery then opening a single Chrome window with 1 tab and going to say the front page of Okayplayer.

"while I'm resizing these pics," again can mean something different. Is it using Preview and Core Image routine, or does it mean Photoshop running a long action on a folder of 50 gigabyte files that include re-sampling, sharpening, color space conversion/etc.

Translating that into time-left is trickier.

The method Apple *was* using would show wildly different estimates on remaining time when load shifted - plus it seems like there were some errors in the calculations.

I have used iStat Menu in the past to see time remaining - I'm not sure if that is accurate any longer.

And you can always look at the Average Energy impact in the Activity monitor to see if processes are consuming a lot of energy.

But it is tricky.

Just calculate the average power consumption over the last minute or two and divide the remaining power by that. Not tricky at all. As stated above, we know it's not accurate. We just want a rough estimate.

Interviews with people familiar with Apple's inner workings reveal that the Mac is getting far less attention than it once did. They say the Mac team has lost clout with the famed industrial design group led by Jony Ive and the company's software team. They also describe a lack of clear direction from senior management, departures of key people working on Mac hardware and technical challenges that have delayed the roll-out of new computers.

While the Mac generates about 10 percent of Apple sales, the company can't afford to alienate professional designers and other business customers. After all, they helped fuel Apple's revival in the late 1990s. In a stinging critique, Peter Kirn, founder of a website for music and video creators, wrote: "This is a company with no real vision for what its most creative users actually do with their most advanced machines."

Yeah, even if computers are only 10% of sales, those computer sales lead to sales of software like Final Cut Pro and whatever else Apple is offering these days. So it's a very significant chunk.

fortune 500 company.

You're 120% right...the power users are key and they are in danger of losing them. On top of the fact that id argue it was the resurgence of their personal computing brand with the transition to X86/intel chips was a big part of the momentum that lead to their world domination. While for 90% of your users a post personal computer world would be fine...graphic designers, musicians, coders...aka your power users, will ALWAYS need a mac.

I was thinking of selling my old 2014 MacBook Pro 15" to maybe get a new Mac and I noticed the track pad wouldn't click very well. Upon further inspection I see the battery had swollen up and was pressing on the track pad.

Took it into Apple ready to pay $199 for a replacement battery.

Turns out it also needs a new top as part of the replacement - and the total would be around $450.

It's been out of warranty for over 13 months.

Apple said they'd do it for free. 3 days later had the Mac back and has a new battery and top.

Hard to beat that level of service.
