"Nintendo NX revealed as Nintendo Switch (video) "

https://youtu.be/f5uik5fgIaI

I saw video of a possible new Mario & Mario Kart.
More interesting was seeing NBA 2K17.
Will this console have better 3rd party support finally?
I'm not big on gaming on the go, but the form factor is interesting.

Has this board given up on Nintendo at this point?

While it's a bit clunkier then I want (but its expected it had to be to fit in a nice sized screen and two controllers)...its one sexy beast and a completely different animal from their kid friendly design. It looks like something designed by Apple or Sony (in 2007, but still, gotta give em props)

That commercial sealed it; shit looked like a millennial car commercial with all the actors legally allowed to buy a drink.

They also had a subtle shoutout to E-sports in the end with that Splatoon championship scene.

It's firmly between the 'fun' party aspect of Wii (imagine being able to play high def drunken mario kart at every house party) and some hardcore games (Skyrim) No one's been able to confirm on what level the graphics are but if they keep it somewhere between XboxOne and Xbox 360 with comparable ports of this gen games...it's gonna be a game changer. Biggest issue is that they are late as fuck to the game, but i don't see a reason why a gamer wouldnt want to add this as a second or third system strictly to play the still godly Nintendo made games assuming the price is right (under $300 bucks)

The video obviously showcases that the system can do 3rd party titles which is a big step up from the Wii and Wii U, but the Switch is not running the new Red Dead Redemption 2 at 60fps.

save for 1st party titles

i imagine that this will be SOP for nintendo: release a console with middling power and a gimmick at a comparatively weird time in the console cycle

granted i'm the type of person that gets excited for eShop games.

but the console looks way more convenient to have around. i hope the UI is easy to navigate.
I wonder if it has touch controls and how much storage there will be.

Where does this leave the 3DS?

through 2018.

Or at least that was the rumor from the lady who got most of the Switch details correct:

https://arcadegirl64.wordpress.com/2016/08/31/recap-of-nx-hardware-details/

That'll work for me since I just copped a New 3DS in August. I'd been wanting one with the removable cover plates for a while.

Do you call the VR PS4 a gimmick? They are still trying to innovate around actual games. I respect that. If the games are fire I'm all in. Plus I still like portable gaming. It's a win win.

I stayed away from the WiiU and the Wii really. I haven't purchased a Nintendo console (not including handhelds) since the N64. So far it looks like they might have me back on board.

From what I understand the demand was lower than what they thought. I even had one pre ordered that I canceled because I didn't see the point at the moment.

VR is a gimmick as well, more than this piece of Nintendo hardware. I got this thing pushing more units also.

That thing has remained popular the entire time. That crowd plus the console crowd will be pleased. You do know games are more than just OMGZ GRAPHICXXXX!!!! right?

I get decent graphics with a Nintendo system that I can take with me that doesn't have motion bullshit but just pure gameplay, it sounds good to me. Shit, I've played my 3DS more than my PS4 in the past few months because the games are "fun".

Some of yall just want the Call of Duty's and Maddens and fuck everything else. I'm glad Nintendo came with this, first piece of somewhat console hardware from them in a long time that I'm legit excited for.

it's not gonna happen. Also I dont think Wi U backwards compatibility matters since nobody bought a Wii U in the first place, lol.

However if they can bring it around to this gen's graphics along with nintendo peerless games at a decent price point, I dont see how its not going to be a success. Obviously people are gonna get their COD/Madden on in other systems...what Nintendo needs is something comparable that can run respectably in the race along with their own games and it seems they've achieved that.

they're likely going to convert WiiU games into eShop, single screen remasters
its not like the 2nd screen was mandatory for most games so that shouldn't be a problem other than having to buy the game again.

we don't know what the battery life is or standby time. i said PROBABLY abysmal.
The Nvidia Shield clocked around 6hrs so i'm assuming this would get you 3. The handheld part for me, is merely a bonus so i can play games anywhere in the house like my 3DS.

we also don't know how it connects to the dock. It would be smart if there was a usb hookup, but i'm sure they're gonna have some proprietary connector, forcing you to lug the dock around.

thereby facilitating immersion for the player. this can be achieved purely with art direction but that's somewhat rare. most games use power and art direction in concert. when power is lacking it can undermine the art direction and immersion-breaking things happen: jagged edges, poor draw distance, pop-in, bad textures, etc.

what about modern games makes you think they're going to age poorly?

It's a novel idea that keeps true to Nintendo's main brand of making fun games and systems for not-so-serious gamers.

This seems like it allows Nintendo to get into mobile gaming without having to worry about porting its games for iOs or Android for a variety of form factors and devices. It's streamlined their development process which can only mean better games.

Nintendo hasn't been attempting to get into serious gaming since the N64 and it's probably for the best since, from what I understand, Nintendo doesn't have the resources for R&D to create next-level gaming devices like Sony and Microsoft.

In a way, the lack of raw power that the device has is disappointing because it would be cool to see Mario Kart or another Nintendo exclusive on a really kitted out system, but I see Nintendo's reasoning for their business choices.

And make no mistake, the Switch's main feature---that it's both a home console and a portable handheld console---is a gimmick, and one that will realistically only appeal to a small slice of the gaming population. It's a cool concept and one that I've thought would be neat in the past, but I have to ask myself: How much will I really use this?

How much will the average gamer really use this feature? On paper or in an ad it sounds great. You play some Zelda but then you have to go somewhere so you just grab the Switch and take it with you. But in practice, how often are you playing a game and then need to go somewhere where you'll still be able to play that game? If I'm playing a game and then need to leave, I probably need to leave to go do something else. Otherwise I would simply stay.

this summer.

The Switch price needs to be closer to that than the Wii U. They Wii U didn't get away with that price 4 years ago and it's Nintendo's worst selling console. However, the Wii launched at $250 and positioned itself as the cheap quirky alternative to the 360 and PS3, and that was Nintendo's best selling console.

If Nintendo wants to bank on another low power box, they gotta make this thing super cheap, especially when Xbones and PS4s can be had for $250.

i generally play my handhelds before bed or lazing around the house.

The draw for me is just being able to play it in bed or on the couch and not take up the tv.
I'm not really ready to throw dirt on it until i actually hear a dev say they're having real problems with it.

Fri Dec-23-16 02:11 PM by bearfield

according to digital foundry:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-nintendo-switch-spec-analysis

As things stand, CPU clocks are halved compared to the standard Tegra X1, but it's the GPU aspect of the equation that will prove more controversial. Even while docked, Switch doesn't run at Tegra X1's full potential. Clock-speeds are locked here at 768MHz, considerably lower than the 1GHz found in Shield Android TV, but the big surprise from our perspective was the extent to which Nintendo has down-clocked the GPU to hit its thermal and battery life targets. That's not a typo: it really is 307.2MHz - meaning that in portable mode, Switch runs at exactly 40 per cent of the clock-speed of the fully docked device. And yes, the table below does indeed confirm that developers can choose to hobble Switch performance when plugged in to match the handheld profile should they so choose.

--------------

that's significant. that's not just a slightly reduced draw distance or a reduction in texture filtering. that's devastating to frame rates and overall visual fidelity. i don't doubt that nintendo can make it work for their first party titles since they always seem to make their shitty hardware work for them but i have a hard time imagining 3rd party titles running well when undocked

In response to Reply # 46

zero.

Ubi and EA'nem will make a couple obligatory games at launch, mostly ports of old titles and sports games, then abandon it.

the only hope is that the publishers currently making 3DS games stick around and we get a Bravely sequel that can be played on the TV or some shit.

that alleged 60% reduction is across the board. it's not going to magically not apply to intelligent systems or platinum games

probably. SOP for new nintendo hardware

>the only hope is that the publishers currently making 3DS

this would be great. i would love to play something like bravely default (or any of the myriad handheld-exclusive JRPG's i've missed over the years) on a nice tablet screen or TV, even if it's "only" 720p. i still think non-AAA 3rd party devs are going to have issues with making games run well when the tablet is undocked unless they aim super low

In response to Reply # 50

the Vita has hella indies (Single A titles, if you will) that I can continue on my TV with PS4 cross saves, but it's not the seamless transition that Nintendo is promising.

i'm hoping the Switch occupies that AA space between A and AAA. give me games that are more polished and substantial than the simple and arcadey stuff i get on my Vita. they don't need to be 50-hour open-world adventures, but i'm hoping the 3rd parties are able to find a mid-size niche on the Switch.

i'm thinking handheld devs should be able to spec up to that level easier than AAA devs can spec down.

In response to Reply # 46

All its really gotta do is not be a Wii U

Graphics dont matter, power dont matter.

The games are gonna be good. The only thing that matters right now is price. If its $250, parents are copping and gamers are putting it next to their XB1s. They keep it tight with the first party titles, 2nd/3rd party experiments, and continue to do well with indie devs, it'll work out.

$250 is worth only having dope 1st party titles and eshop exclusives. If the price is in that range, youre copping it and then deciding whether to pair it with a PS4 or XB1.

In response to Reply # 46

the screen in the handheld is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than any TV in your home. the system doesn't need to push nearly as many triangles to that screen as it does to your TV.

I think in the end people are more worried about this than they need to be, but I don't plan on getting one either way so this news didn't really register with me beyond a vague sense that it'll all be OK.

and possibly having to go from 720p (listed resolution of the screen) to something below 720p in order to get your game to run undocked is pretty significant. this may be the pc snob in me talking. most people may not notice the difference between 600p and 720p on a screen that small

probably. i think this is standard "why won't nintendo pony up for decent hardware just this one time?!" discussion. i do plan on getting one if i can get some games like bravely default, dragon quest, and other jrpgs previously relegated to handhelds. and it's nintendo. they'll be fine

All they have to do is mix PSN and XBL into one branding it as Nintendo Online. They've got enough catalog to sell used backlog games as Switch compatible to satiate the appetites while developers create new Switch specific experiences.

The Switch is damn near full proof in a way. Switch owners get all the AAA games on other platforms plus the exclusive Nintendo games. I'm copping at 250 if true sight unseen.

In response to Reply # 0

I was just in Tokyo a few weeks ago and I was in a room full of Japanese people (one of which was a 10 year old child who owns a WiiU). When I brought up the switch they looked at me like I had two heads. I played the trailer for them and they lost their minds. I would think if they are planing to launch this thing in March they might want to start promoting it. I guess that will happen after the January event.

Cop-on-sight price

Like i said, this is going right next to the pc/ps4/XB1 whether you plan on undocking it or not.

$250, like the Wii, is fine even if you only play 1st party games and never even open the eShop or play Virtual Console.

If they can do this, it'll definitely help.
I already heard on The Know that Gamestop is not getting many consoles.
So I expect a "Oh, we didn't know there was going to be this much demand" press release.

The big determining factor of course; what games are scheduled to drop at the release date? I suppose I'll be alright if that new Zelda actually drops when the console is released. I just hope Amazon has them in stock by the time the price and ordering info is released since I'm sure it'll be impossible to get one at the brick and mortar store here in NYC.

A mew Metroid dropping and I'll be on cloud nine; for some reason, I don't care for Mario type games anymore.

It's a damn shame if Nintendo doesn't learn from their past mistakes regarding the sales being shoddy; it's cool and all if the consoles themselves are good to great in terms of design, but it don't mean a thing if the games themselves aren't entertaining.

Still, at $250.00 out the game, that's hard to not want to take a crack at the system.

it looks like they learned from the Wii U and 3DS launch and went back to the Wii playbook and added some NDS plays.

leading with motion control stuff. not promising

mario was a given. i'm not fooled by the hat thing. that's a de facto double jump

xenoblade could be good

fire emblem warriors seems counter to the fire emblem gameplay design philosophy (i guess they're just licensing out the characters though). i don't know how much juice omega force has left after hyrule warriors, samurai warriors, dynasty warriors, and dragon quest heroes

dragon quest 10 and 11! in japan only for now! dragon quest heroes 1 is already available on all (?) platforms, with 2 coming soon to those same platforms

skyrim running on under powered hardware. great. maybe motion controls will add some player agency or provide more immersion

new SMT might be good but persona 5 is coming out soon

no more heroes 2? maybe? the design and gameplay that made that game unique is ~10 years old now. suda's track record lately is kind of spotty

no one is buying nintendo consoles for ea sports games

f-zero in that montage? thought i saw a listing for hitman in there. reddit says ssx (maybe a sequel to the recent reboot?) + a gang of titles already available on xone and ps4

it's over. i'm skeptical. $300 seems like a lot for what it's offering, speaking as a person who owns a gaming pc and a ps4. other people might find that price point more appealing

In response to Reply # 0

-The actual presentation was cringe-worthy at points, but a few of the games looks pretty good and they updated the site with a bunch of good infos.
-I thought it would be $250. $50 more doesn't really make a difference to me, but I think it might to some.
-Accessory pricing is high. $70 for the pro controller and $80 for a Joycon set? Yeesh.
-It seems like they're doing a PS+/Games with gold style thing but for NES/SNES games: "Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month." Also discounts. I hope it's less than what Sony and MS are charging but I know it won't be.
-Two to six hours battery isn't bad, especially if it just uses a regular USB-C cable. I can just charge it with the same brick I use for my camera. The website says it gets three hours when playing Zelda.
-I like that it uses game cards. Something old-school cool about them.
-Micro SD cards are also a smart move. I was worried they'd do some nut ass Vita shit. Also, it already having 32GB of internal memory is good.
-Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers looks kind of like that SFII game that was on 360/PS3 that Udon did the art for.

Zelda is launching with it and looks amazing so I'm basically getting one at launch.

Miyamoto has crazy personality, the rest of these mofos...they need to hire real pr people.

While I get the wii controller will effectively never die, we couldda skipped that 5 minute westworld ass shootout production. On top of I hope with the kinect (rip) dying such an ignoble death they dont really push motion controls cause...

That EA Switch thing scared me when it would be a "special" version. which makes me think we going back to wii control games where they would put in shitty shaking joystick dynamics just because. All EA needs to do is stuff Madden/FIFA 's current gen version exactly into the Switch and its a wrap (imagine settling madden or 2k shit talking on rhe spot). That alone would sell me but as it is...

I preordered it, but thinking on it I wonder why, lol. Its great but outside of Nintendo's offering (of which only zelda will be ready ar launch) no other games sold me. Shit, some those announcements seemed more for New 3ds then a new high def system.

Hell, I got a PS4 at launch in Nov. 13' and literally didn't buy a game for the thing until Infamous Second Son in March 14'.

The fact that it's launching with what I consider a must have makes it automatically the most interesting launch since the Wii and Twilight Princess. I'd rather have one game I really want than a bunch of third party stuff I could care less about just to check boxes (although having both would be good, like the PSP launch).

*Raises hand*

Im an idiot and its my birthday a few weeks after the release; I can just add Zelda to my ever growing list of games apparently I collect, but just don't play.

They shouldda left it in the oven a bit longer until they had more games. Zelda's an AAA title to the extreme...probably the best launch title we've seen in decades. But the overall list is the most anemic launch for a system ive ever seen:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (March 3rd)
1-2-Switch (March 3rd)
Just Dance 2017 (March 3rd)
Skylanders Imaginators (March 3rd)
Super Bomberman R (March 3rd)

LOL

What I hoped is that since Wii U had those expected Nintendo classics with plans to port them (splatoon, smash, mario kart), id be able to cop to effectively 'catch up' with what Nintendo's been doing for the past ten years or so.

Add on a couple of sports games/ similar multiplayer games to actually tote this thing around as an option for some drunken house party shenanigans.

Instead it looks like outside of the Zelda those ports are vaguely dropping in 2017? Like why i gotta wait till Fall for PORTS of years old Wii U games like y'all aint know you had a new system coming out.

And there are no real sports games/multiplayer games.

1 2 Switch seems like a shitty attempt to revamp Wii Sports as 'offline fun' when them niggas just needed to basically just copy that same exact template with just better graphics/features. And unlike Wii Sports which as pack in was responsible for selling millions of OG Wii's...1 2 Switch is a full priced game.

I see it doing better than the Wii U overall, but that's about it.

Too expensive. Launch lineup looks weak outside of Zelda. 3rd party support ain't happening.

Diehards will buy it, but it's not going to convert people into casual gamers like the Wii did with them damn joycons. The system's only hope is that it takes the handheld baton from the 3DS, but I don't see how with the games shown and battery life that ranges from TWO to six hours. The handheld angle is probably why they're selling it for $40 cheaper in Japan than in the US. America don't give a fuck about handhelds no more.

But it has SFII so I'm coppin.

Probably in the range of the PS3/360/PSP, or in the low 80 millions.

Which would be really good for a Nintendo home system considering only Wii sold more than that.

interesting they're going with the launch "window" approach again

Zelda obviously looks dope
The Mario game looked good but kinda Sonic-like
I actually wanna play the motion stuff especially Arms, which interestingly has online play.
I'm one of the few people interested in that Puyo/Tetris game
Mario Kart 8 with way better battle mode

Looking forward to Splatoon 2, and RiME

Battery life isn't that big of a deal to me and i'm glad it can charge with USB-C

Curious about the convoluted online thing and the absence of Virtual Console talk.
I just hope my eshop purchases are still in tact

I pre ordered because I want to be able to play that Mario game when it drops. That said the launch line up looks weak sauce outside of Zelda. But I guess most launch lineups are weak sauce. Nintendo needed to knock this one out of the park. The pitch was coming right down the plate and all they did was hit a foul. I'm a casual gamer who didn't own a wii U so I'm hoping that there will be enough solid titles to support my purchase of this damn console. Also virtual console is a big deal for me. They gotta get that right.

I don't even know if this will be hard to get post launch because of how weird that presentation was last night and the lack of killer apps outside of Zelda now and Mario around Christmas.

You can't overwrite the Wii U firmware with custom firmware, but outside of that you can do everything else. Even then they have a work around for custom firmware that you can run off of the SD card though.

You could download games straight from Nintendo's servers through some back door and install them straight to internal memory or an external drive and run them like normal. FOR FREE. If you can get it from the eStore then you can get it.

I'm sure the independent games are cool too (I guess).

Funnily enough, Twilight Princess HD eats up half of 32 GBs. It must be a staple of the Zelda series, like the Master Sword.

If you tryna play Bayonetta, for the cost of a 32 GB SD card (I started with a 8 GB and soon realized some games were at least 10 GBs) and a SD card Reader, you could set your Wii U up to play that and any other game in 2 hours from scratch.

I fucked around and copped a pro controller. Now it almost gets as much burn as my PS4 did. That's until I cop another PS4 at least.

I love still having physical media for my games. Especially carts because they last. However if you can download this game why make the amount of storage space so small? AND how are you gonna charge so much with that small amount of space?!?!?

I really don't understand Nintendo and with the Switch rolling out like this I doubt I ever will.

Shit, the Vita was a $250 handheld with NO internal memory AND you had to shell out for proprietary memory cards that weren't usable in anything else and (still) go for obscene amounts of money ($85 for 32GB, $104 for 64GB).

I'm actually hoping this replaces the Vita as a console for Western downloadable indie games (if Sony doesn't make another portable, which I'm guessing they won't).

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/01/hands-on-with-nintendo-switch-jack-of-all-trades-master-of-some/2/

The entire hands-on article is worth reading, but I thought this was interesting:

"The more I think about it, the more I think Nintendo should have released a cheaper, portable-only edition of the Switch. Doing so would reduce the $299 asking price (Nintendo is selling extra TV docking systems for $90 on their own) and highlight the system's biggest strengths. But doing so would also essentially concede an essential truth: that Nintendo has made a great portable console that just happens to connect to your TV, rather than a great TV console that happens to be portable. If Nintendo can focus on the Switch's strengths, and somehow bulk up a threadbare software library, then it could still end up being an interesting part of the console market."

I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the day Resident Evil 4 was announced for the PS2, and while I definitely feel like I've missed out on the Mario Galaxy games I get the impression Wind Waker was the last unique 3D Zelda game until this one and I really can't think of anything besides those Mario games I was super interested in playing on a Nintendo console. Every dope game they had usually had a reasonable alternative on PS4 (like Bayonetta -> DmC) even if it wasn't 1:1 in terms of Japanese weirdness/quality.

I'm really, really interested in this new Zelda but, again, I still have a LOT of game that's (seemingly) very similar in structure, and I also can't justify spending $300 just to play a single game. Nintendo 64 and Playstation was really the only generation I found having two consoles viable, PS2 just ate Gamecube's lunch and I never looked back.

It's looking like a banner year for third party games (ghost recon, red dead, for honor, etc etc) and exclusives (God of Warm, Zero Horizon Dawn) and spending $300 on a half-novelty system doesn't seem like the best move.

I (sorta, through the internet) know this Russian pixel artist who worked on Pocket Rumble so I think I'll buy that.

I'll probably also get Mr. Shifty and Dandara.

What I really want are ports of Nuclear Throne and Hyperlight Drifter. The former especially since I do a run damn near every day and it would probably work better on Switch than it does on Vita.

In response to Reply # 0

I saw one person playing the game bright and early this morning before I left for work. One of the streamer's JoyCon controllers was acting up and wasn't responding correctly 100% of the time he had it inside the controller. He mentioned Nintendo issuing an update for the system later on today, which is pretty wild. Almost as if folks that were fortunate to cop the system are serving as beta testers.

The Zelda game itself looks beyond gorgeous, but I still don't think copping a Switch is justified solely for playing this game. From what little I saw, the game looks quite deep and it appears to have adopted a ton of crafting game mechanics from recent action-RPG type games. I'd love to see what a Metroid game would look like on this system.

In response to Reply # 0

Is it possible Nintendo is trying to gin up extra interesting in the Switch system by selling the systems in short supply, similar to how they did with the original Wii? The WiiU did poorly from what I gather casually online, so is it possible Nintendo wants to garner extra interest in their brand?

It'll be interesting to me if the system continues to sell in short supply some holiday season.

its never a total shortage. you may not be able to find any in one area, but its like a goldmine the next town over.

There's a 3DS 'shortage' now. One target around here hasn't had very many for months while another across town is completely stocked.

I feel like I've e-known y'all dudes for years so you already know I'm portable fiend. In the two days I've owned this thing, I'd say it's the best portable I've played, and owes more to the PSP Go than any previous Nintendo handheld, imo. I can see it getting comparisons to the Vita, but I feel like this blows that out of the water on a hardware/design level:

-No proprietary memory cards (and 32GB internal)
-Standard charging cable
-An even bigger screen
-Traditional console control setup (two shoulder buttons and clicking sticks)
-Easily hooks up to a TV
-Allows for the use of external controllers

In a crazy way, the PSP Go actually has a lot of those features (internal memory, controller support, TV hookup) so this feels more like what the Vita should have been if Sony wasn't scared of cannibalizing PS3/PS4 sales.

I'm many hours into BotW and I've played it all in portable mode with a very brief break for table top to test my pro controller. The thing is super comfortable for long play sessions and I can really see taking it everywhere with me. I guess my only knock thus far is that I wish the dock didn't have to be upright because it doesn't fit well in my entertainment thingy (not that I have any huge desire to dock it anyway).

I was fortunate enough to see Kotaku post that Amazon had some in stock; I was one of the lucky ones to press that Add To Cart button within that two-three hour window when the Switches were in stock. It arrived yesterday and boy am I amazed at how tiny the system is. I was a little worried nothing was going to be in the box since I didn't see any tape on box itself to seal everything closed.

I only played about 10-15 minutes, but I can easily see Breath of the Wild stealing many weekend hours from me. I'm too smart to know I can't even tough this game during the work week since it'll easily keep my up til 1 to 2 in the AM. Seeing that both this and the new Mario game are both sandbox-ish in style made me want to cop the system, even though it is highly possible those maybe the only two high quality games for the system going by Nintendo's recent history with quality games for their recent systems. I suppose ultimately time will tell.
