mostly because of how infrequently they release updates. and especially compared to how often nvidia releases their driver updates and betas. with nvidia you're almost guaranteed to get day-of driver updates for major games. that means updates are usually monthly and often bi-weekly. with amd you're lucky to get a driver update once or twice every few months. this was my experience with purchasing and using an amd card after owning an nvidia card

I'm heading to Yosemite from Saturday until Thursday so I don't even know if I'll install it before then.

Looks like it's close to the 970 and not the 980 as some early articles indicated.

Long story but....

I'm an 1920x1080 gamer and Overwatch for the $199 Sapphire model is getting over 60FPS on Overwatch with everything set to High or Epic.

Good enough for me.

I'll spend the big bucks when the have a card that can do 60FPS with 4K for under $300 (probably a few years away.)
