"Anyone ever had AT&T Uverse with gigapower???"

I've been suffering internet wise for 6 years since we moved to this country town but right now AT&T is installing their Uverse with gigapower on our street. So there's finally some light at the end of this tunnel. Anyone with any experience with this version of Uverse? Is it worth the money? I mean I really have no choice but was curious since I've been stuck with DSL for years.

Funnily enough, I'm actually ditching Cox (after being a customer over 5 years at two addresses) this weekend and the DirecTV/ATT installer is coming on Saturday. Cutting $55 off my bill for just internet/TV (fuck a landline) and bumping up my internet d/u speeds to 75/75.

Besides the price, the biggest selling point for me was going from Cox's cable line to ATT's recently installed fiber optics in my area. I received an email if I have interest in Google Fiber some time ago but I have an inkling I'm just outside the range for their Irvine installation.

I'll let you know how it goes. If I were you though, DSL is brutal and I'd explore any means possible to get off it.

Definitely getting off of the DSL and ditching my landline too. For basic home phone and DSL my bill is like 103 bucks which makes no sense.

There was no clean way to install a dish on my house without it being on the front and/or needing to put a ladder in my neighbor's yard, so they killed the DirecTV and signed me up for U-Verse. Pretty sweet, because it dropped my bill to about 110 for TV and internet.

Connection so far is great; hardwired I hit speeds up to 85 down and Xbox wifi gets me up to 55 down. Definitely better than Cox so far.

I will be paying close to nothing for it. It will not be dedicated 1GB like Google but def better then what you have.

I would imagine for those who do not have Google in their state might see high pricing

if you are getting gigapower, you have a direct fiber drop

Dedicated access vs shared access

AT&T is only offering shared access to residence, meaning
sharing bandwidth with the neighborhood

Dedicated is simply none shared access and generally comes
with symmetrical speeds (same speed up & down)

I ended up quitting and eating the cancellation fee because the salesman lied to me about what my bill would be.

edit - I didn't have gigapower, but I had one of the faster-tier fiber optic ones, and it was really fast.

for my team too. I work for att also.

I need to figure out if I want dtv. I have u-verse, which is cool for my household. we don't really do a lot movies or games, so I'm not sure if we'd benefit from the extra speed. it couldn't hurt tho. I've been reluctant to get a dish on/near the house. I might change my mind once I look at pricing tho.

Rjcc nailed it...the only thing you need to really worry about is the price point.

Gigapower is simply the sales term they are using to bring people on board...so you need to get qualifying questions about how fast they are guaranteeing your speed to be, etc.

if it is FTTP...then I'm assuming if they are marketing Gigapower in your area that you are near a L3 Ethernet switch that will allow you to get the speeds you need. Just off that ALONE I probably have a general idea of where you are....

You need to factor in how close you are to the CO...most FTTP has a max reach of 44.6 kft to your Remote Optical Line Terminal. Farther away degrades speeds a bit.

The only major competitor I see to AT&T on that front is Google Fiber...and even they are reselling facilities out of our CO's.

I hope that helps but, to answer your question in the short version...welcome to the 1st step of what the company is trying to do nationwide.

44.6 Kft from the ROLT is the distance limit on all fiber.

There is no such thing as non-regenerative signaling. Even delivering on Single Mode fiber...you are going to hit a distance limit and have to regenerate...meaning you are going to get SOME dispersion.

We aren't LightGig enabled in my region yet but I'm humping overtime to get Remote OLT's peppered around CO's so that we can start offering competitive speeds in our market.

But don't take my word for it....Go check Apex, my G. Alcatel 7342 specs will tell it all.

I just dont think it worth the head ache to debate it. The info you are denying is right there, as he stated, in APEX. Gigapower has restrictions because ALL fiber (single or multi) has a distance restriction. I dont care if it's 5mb circuit or 10GB ethernet circuit, there is a distance restriction.

They are gonna say you either have gigapower available or you dont. If you do have it available you can choose either 300meg or 1 gb.

THey arent looking at your distance from the co or anything like that. Its gonna be a screen and its gonna show them what service is availble. Thats it

I don't see how anything you said other than the pricing is gonna be crucial helps this guy
Its clear that you know about the network but its also clear you have minimal experience with the actual process of ordering service. which is fine but seriously. Relax

So...your simple "LightGig or Not" was determined by people like myself who actually set up the Distance Restrictions for your FSA.

All Gigapower is not the same. The only reason I mentioned distance restrictions is because, if you take that line over to DSL Reports....your neighbor two blocks down and closer to the PFP serving your area may get better speeds.

In short...this is the High Tech board. I try not to speak about shit I don't know backwards and forwards. Your statement was false. I can SEE why it seems true to you...but its false.

And like you said...this is some silly shit to argue about. Facts is facts. Another real talk moment...99.9% of our customer base don't have the equipment to maximize that GigaPower. It's just a pretty marketing tool.

potential customer

none of that shit about distance does him any good in any part of the process of obtaining service

this wasnt a "demonstrate your knowledge of networks post"

this was a guy asking for information that would assist him in making a decision on whether or not to get gigapower

*edit*

again just to make this clear

zero you said about distance, restrictions, none of that will be mentioned once in the entire process of obtaining uverse gigapower

i am intimately familiar with the process of ordering, provisioning, and troubleshooting uverse and i can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, from the customer standpoint(which was the whole purpose of this guys post) will distance be mentioned once to him.
