How are folks organizing and keeping track of thousands of high resolution photos?

What do you mean by 'the cloud'? I ask because Picasa was a cloud service.

Do you mean an app to manage your photos on your home PC/Mac?

Something to manage my 15 years and tens of thousands of pictures that reside on my desktop computer.

I don't want a cloud solution because I will eventually make out the storage and I don't want to pay for storage.

Adobe Lightroom might be your best bet though. It would cost you 9.99 a month since it's part of their Creative Cloud suite but you would also get PhotoShop along with that package

version from B&H Photo and other online vendors I believe.

A good comparison:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/versions.html

AL6 works just fine for me. None of the additional features of the subscription model interest me at all.

manages your photos..... It takes over your folder structure and you can only access your photos easily from WITHIN the software. So say I want to email some pics to somebody, I can't just go to gmail and browse and attach my pics.....

Everyone is trying to take services that you use to use on your desktop and allow you to do them in the cloud anywhere on any device.

That's great and I want that but I also want to be able keep all my stuff on a device that is not in the cloud so I actually have control of my music, photos and documents and I don't have to end up paying fees to someone else to store or access my stuff.

It does have facial recognition. Still feel more inclined to use picasa unsupported than Lightroom 6.

do you use?

Also, a SSD helps a TON because of the way it catalogs your photos. Were you trying the new subscription based version or LR6?

I'm running it on a nearly 4 year old Macbook Pro 15"
