"Whats the current word on smartwatches?"

Does purchasing one make sense?

I started wearing a regular watch again about a year ago. Before that I had the mindset of "my phone has the time why would I want a watch?"

There are situations where pulling out your phone just isn't appropriate. Also, wearing a watch is a fashion statement.

I do think some of the features are interesting on smartwatches. I don't expect to use one constantly but it interest me enough to consider it.

I am seriously debating on getting the original 360. With the announcement of the new 360 would this be dumb? Would it make sense to wait it out longer to see if the price goes even lower? Should I consider a used one?

In response to Reply # 1

Why not go with the apple watch?

I had my mind set that I would get the 1st gen unless the 2nd got rid of the "flat tire" and doubled battery life. Even though that is not the case I really am liking the look of the 2nd one. So much so that the 1st gen isn't looking so good anymore in comparison.

The heart rate monitor and Exercise application are what I use 99% of the time.

Occasionally i'll read a text or pick up a phone call while hiking - it does help me continue hiking with stopping and pulling out the phone.

I haven't used it for iPod control, my wired headphones do that well enough.

At $199 it's be a hell of an exercise tracker - and $349 it's over-priced.

But more like this

http://www.engadget.com/www.engadget.com/2015/09/06/wena-wrist-hands-on/

I think some people will like to read notifications on their phone. It is convenient, but these current crop of 1 day a charge phone ain't it.

Smart watches I think are an evolutionary upgrade that will eventually be ubiquitous, but it isn't a life changing upgrade like people make it out to be.

and cuz of "ghost vibrations"

at work they don't want folks using their cell phones but many times i wont be at my desk yet need to be mindful of any emails that may come in. many times i'll feel a notification come in just to see its an up/game reminding me of something stupid. if i can take a quick look at my watch to see if its an email or not i think it would be good. perhaps that can all be fixed by spending some time adjusting my notifications settings tho.

then theres those ghost vibrations where i swear i felt my phone vibrate just to see that nope, nada. who's to say i wont start getting ghost vibrations on the watch tho.

i don't see myself spending $300 on one but if the 1st gen 360 gets to $100 brand new i just may.

kind of. The S7 Edge promo for Verizon convinced me to go for it. Still waiting for my submission for the Gear S2 to go through. Don't like the idea of tizen in principle but it appears to be a good option.

I wanted to get the classic but the offer was only for the dark gray model. Really digging the S7 edge, came from a Note 3 (yeah 3).

Anyone have the Gear S2?

to get another one too..
Hoping it's the 3G model, but i'm sure it's likely the bluetooth one. I'll give it to my wife.

Don't even trip on Tizen...if anything, it makes the watch BETTER...compared to my wife's current Sony Android Wear watch the interface is hands down much more intuitive and easier to navigate. Yeah...there aren't as many apps...but honestly, how many apps does one really need on a wristwatch?? The integration with S Health is great and the batter life is good. I can get through 1.5 days...but I usually just charge it over night because it's painless. The charger just happens to be the perfect place to stash the thing. For free.99...you will be very pleased with it.

I still prefer the design of the Moto 360 2nd Gen but having a fully round display may just be better.

I really want to find a way to swap it out for the classic, even if I have to pay $50 difference.

I do agree regarding the apps. I mostly want this to tell time, notifications, and not look like garbage. I'm sure I'll find other things I find useful but I think this will be plenty. From what I have read it does seem that Tizen is the better option at the moment. I just don't like the idea of samsung trying to split android even more. Oh well though.

Any tips for the s2?

Is the better fit for my lifestyle and what I use it for. I wanted it for the fitness tracking features primarily. The rubber band works best for that. I also have dressy watches, so I can easily just wear those if I need to dress things up. I think i'd probably not be likely to switch out bands all the time too. The knobby bezel is probably the only thing I'm missing out on with the classic....it would make turning the bezel easier while wearing gloves.

No real tips....just enjoy it for what it is and don't focus on what it doesn't have when compared to Android wear or Apple Watch. Overall....I think it's the best out of the choices on the market right now. Apps just aren't a big deal as people are making them out to be IMO. S Health is now completely robust enough for me to not miss having Endomondo or Strava apps on the watch.

I use a Pebble cause the charge lasts 3 plus days and it does pretty much everything I want a smartwatch for.

I use it to:
-Control music/podcasts (especially skipping podcast commercials on the bike or in the shower)
-Quick reply to texts "on my way" "riding now, call you later", etc
-Open voice search when I have bluetooth headphones on (via Tasker)
-Check in to places (yes, I still do this)
-See basic weather forecast
-On-Wrist Google Maps Directions (leave phone screen off, save battery)
-Time my Aeropress steeping
-Set timers, alarms and stopwatches
-Calculator (when my phone is annoying to get at)
-Calendar (both day/date and appointments)
-Tell Time

You just open it up and put a couple of square layers of electrical tape under the back panel. This removes the space in there where the connections are getting jiggled loose by that strong-ass vibration.

I did this with mine and the screen has only acted strangely once or twice since, and even then it was not nearly as severe as before.

I like it as a whole. I actually ended up paying $50 to upgrade to the S2 classic and I think that was a good deal. I do use it for a few things and don't really wanna do too much more with it.

1) Place golden eye Q-watch face on it - Check
2) Tell time - Check
3) Receive notifications, especially for calls - Check
4) Check weather - Check
5) Add water intake - Check
6) Check step count and count steps while phone is not on me - Check
7) Check notifications during a meeting without pulling out phone - Check

Things I may want to do and haven't tried

Control music, I see it has the option but I haven't been in a situation where I have had to use it....might be useful...don't think I want to wear it in the shower
Reply to texts/emails...I haven't really tried it and it seems it would be too cumbersome but I may give it a shot. Right now I am happy with being able to view the message and clear it or send it to the phone to take action there.
Voice search...not a big fan in general but may try it at some point
Use samsung/android pay

There are two things that I wish it could do or could do better

Track quality of sleep, why bother wearing it to sleep if it wont do this
Be able to set a timer/stop watch quickly. There should be a two step process to get to this on a watch as a worse case.

I haven't looked into the functions of the watch too much. There may be some tips on how to do things I'm not doing which would make it even better but I'm pretty happy with it.

Battery is lasting about 2.5 days so far. Seems to be increasing. I took it off the charger the second it hit 100% the first day but have since let it drop to under 10% before charging and let it sit charged for a while. I am turning it off at night since there's no need to have it on.

I did put a screen protector on it and it has a dent on the protector already.

Since most smart watches are companion devices I think the best move is to offer them for cheap bundled with new smartphones. I think people that enjoy wearing watches/bands would enjoy it if they didn't have to pay $200 and above for them.

These platforms are maturing a rate that software support cannot keep up with. Save your money and wait this out until it stabilizes like smartphones have.

is LEGIT!!!! i've had it for 6 days now. does everything a smart watch can do with notifications, step counter, sleep counter, but the activity tracker is great. I do a lot of cycling and hiking and it is as accurate as my Garmin Edge device. the HR is also cool and informative. i mostly got it for the activity tracking and step counter, but the wrist notifications from the phone are really great. battery is outstanding, lasts over a week. its also touch screen.
i think it does basically everything the Apple watch does besides voice command/text/talking, but the Apple watch cant do GPS activity tracking or heart rate, plus the battery is laughably bad.
