"Poll question: Better Console: PS4 or XBOX One?"

I am still using my PS3 and am going to be forced to get a next gen console for Fallout 4. I am unsure of which to get and looking for advice. I would have normally just upgraded to a PS4 but because none of my PS3 games will work on it, I am open to whichever console is better. Thoughts?

-the baseline steam machine is at least as powerful as a xbone or ps4

-ps3, ps4, 360, and xbone controllers can be used with a steam machine

-the PC game library is exponentially larger than the ps4 and xbone libraries combined. this doesn't include emulation. you could conceivably have every game from every console, save for ps3 and 360, on your steam machine

-PC games are almost always cheaper than their console counterparts. games will often be 15-25% cheaper at launch, and much cheaper than that 6 months down the line

-the only games you'd miss out on by buying a PC instead of a console are console exclusives, of which there are currently very few, and fallout 4 isn't one of them

-the superior version of fallout 4 will be the pc version. it will look better and play better (higher frame rate). mods will fix bugs, add quests + weapons + characters, improve graphics, and extend its life for years after people stop playing it on consoles. modders are still making and supporting mods for fallout 3 and new vegas

Bearfield was right

If you're looking for exclusives they're coming but as of now they've just been ok, unless you're looking to play updated versions of games you've already played.

I've gotten more use out of my PC than any console so far though. Games are cheaper, look a lot better, and no backwards compatibility issues.

Sometimes it boils down to how many of your friends have which system also.

This is usually the correct answer.

That being said, the mod community on PC (especially for games like Fallout) is absurdly great.

If you're also a fan of strategy games, XCOM 2 is going to be a PC exclusive, at least initially. XCOM 1 still has a huge community because of several killer mods keeping it going.

I am researching Steam Machines now:

http://www.cnet.com/products/alienware-steam-machine/

but I am just wondering if I should just get a regular PC for games.

I am not a hardcore gamer. I play every once in a while when time permits. I generally (with the exception of Fallout) wait for the price to drop on games before I buy them.

My favorites right now are:
Uncharted series
Fallout series
Final Fantasy
The Last of Us
The Walking Dead (Telltale)
Red Dead Redemption

Read Dead *might* be getting a PC port one day, but it's not confirmed and it's been years since that game came out.

Uncharted and Last of Us are only on Sony consoles.

Final Fantasy XV *might* also come to PC, but that hasn't been announced yet. FFs have been on PC before but they generally have come a bit after the console versions. I'd say that's likely to change since some Japanese devs are finding unexpected success on PC (Valkyria Chronicles did great on PC for Sega).

two of the series you love are produced by one studio, Naughty Dog, which is owned by Sony. if you like those games more than anything else currently going, there's a chance you end up buying a PS4 anyway just to play those games, after already spending ~$700 on a quality Steam machine for the other games you casually play.

I envy the lifestyle of a PC gamer, but I think you also have to be reasonably invested to get what you want out of it. There are, at times, config files to goof with, weird tics with drivers and hardware to contend with, that are removed from the console experience by virtue of homogeny. For someone that says they don't play too many games, and listed several major franchises that are either exclusive to Sony consoles or guaranteed available on anything, it sounds like a console would be a more pragmatic decision, graphics and mod support aside.

When PC devs can tailor their games towards 3-4 different configurations instead of virtually unlimited as it was before, then we'll start seeing a similar level of homogeny... on top of the other PC advantages that bearfield stated, of course.

Honestly, I tend to float from one platform to another depending on whims, but I'm glad that the Steam Machine is finally releasing. I don't plan on getting one personally, but we've already seen several of the (good) changes that PC pressure has put on the console wars, and now we're seeing the (good) changes that console pressure has put on the PC. Competition always benefits the consumer, so it's good to see this coming around.

and hasn't for a few generations now.

When was the last time one major console absolutely blasted the comp out the water?

Exactly.

Just decide on what brand and features you're more familiar with and ride with it.

Is that I only know a handful of people who console game. So I'd really be on my own playing PC. I'm about to make that leap part time over to PC gaming but I think it'll be primarily for non-multiplayer heavy games.

I just now pre ordered Batman: Arkham Knight, the premium version with season pass for $33

Shit retails for $89 on consoles.

If you already have one of the new consoles, I'd highly recommend your next step being a gaming pc.
