I'm basically going to use it to write sermons, books, personal office matters, surf the wed, and stuff like that.

I got one each of this one for both my kids (teens).

I was leery at first, but they're working out great.

You just can't have a ton of stuff running at the same time, otherwise it'll run slow...

I write as a hobby, a good keyboard makes a big difference. ThinkPads are the only laptops I've used where the typing experience is really on-par with a good desktop keyboard.

I've been using an old ThinkPad x120e that I got for $100 dollars on eBay, it's small and not powerful but I only do writing on. It looks like you can get the newer x140e for a decent price:

Keep in mind that the screen is pretty small, 11.6". I don't know if you're looking for something bigger.

I've been buying the new zenbooks (Asus ux305) for $699 and theyre great. 8 GB, 256 ssd, very thin and light. Only issue has been some weirdness on connecting to 2.4 GHz wifi at times. Definitely would recommend if you can go up a few hundred more. It's really a steal at $700.

Gotta wait for the coupons to hit.

Coupons can be found at bargain sites like this example: http://slickdeals.net/f/7780899-dell-outlet-home-25-on-pcs-laptos-tablets?v=1

Then search on Dell's outlet : http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/22/campaigns/outlet

They had this for $339 before coupon:
Inspiron 15 - 3542
Processor: Intel Core 4th Generation i3-4030U processor (3M Cache, 1.9 GHz)
Windows 8.1
500 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
4GB DDR3L at 1600MHz
15.6 inch LED Backlit Display with Truelife and HD resolution (1366 x 768)
8X DVD +/- RW Drive
Intel HD Graphics
Dell Outlet Inspiron-15 - 3542

After a 25% coupon and add shipping that'd be around $275-$300.
