"External Hard Drive Crashes and Data Recovery Option"

Problem: 2TB Western Digital Hard Drive stopped mounting on my computer. I got a new enclosure for it. And now my MAC can't read it.

I can open the Disk Utility and see the drive, but the computer still can’t read it. The only thing on the drive are video files avi, mkv, and mp4.

I’ve contacted a few Data Recovery Services and they said I have to bring the drive in, but recovery can run from $500 to $1,500. I wouldn’t be against $500, but not crazy about it.

What other options do I have? Data Recovery software? Or should I just eat that L and start looking for these movies all over again?

The results were mixed, but overall good. It appeared to recover data that was on unaffected sectors of the hard drive, and failed to recover those that were physically affected. Also, most of my MP3s were jacked up... songs were cut in parts and spliced with other songs. I think it's worth a try if there is data on there that you need. However, since you said movies, these sound like very large files...the chances might be low for those to come out unaffected (since there is a greater chance that their data spans a physically damaged part of the drive). Just something to think about.

These might help.

I'll usually get a , um, "trial copy" and if it works I'll but it.

....they have a trial version which can scan the drive and show what files can be recovered, i think it lets you recover a few in the trial mode as well
