"Joe Montana Football '16 in Development (swipe) "

Joe Montana Football 16 in development in Unreal Engine 4, says Joe Montana
By Samit Sarkar on Mar 16, 2015 at 10:00p @SamitSarkar

Joe Montana, the legendary NFL quarterback, is once again lending his name to a football video game. Called Joe Montana Football 16, the game is in development in Unreal Engine 4, announced Montana on Twitter today.

The tweet contains a screenshot bearing the Unreal Engine 4 logo. Along with the image, Montana said, "It just got Unreal," and mentioned the Unreal Engine Twitter account along with the hashtag #joemontanafootball16.

Montana, 58, has been teasing Joe Montana Football 16 since July 2014, when he tweeted artwork of himself in a generic football jersey with the hashtags #joemontanafootball16 and #youvewaitedlongenough. He followed that up in October with a video of himself recording motion capture, along with his in-game model mapped to the motion capture, tagged with #morethanarosterupdate and #montana16. The former hashtag refers to a common derisive refrain among gamers: the idea of annualized sports games as nothing more than "roster updates."

Today's screenshot makes Joe Montana Football 16 look like a game that lacks official licensing from the NFL and the NFL Players Association — in other words, it does not appear to contain real NFL teams or current NFL players. There's no word yet on developers, publishers or platforms for Montana 16, but being an unlicensed product would open up the game to being released on consoles, like 2010's Backbreaker.

Electronic Arts maintains licensing agreements with the NFL and NFLPA, exclusive contracts that prevent any other publishers from making console games with real NFL teams or players. An unlicensed game could feature Montana because the NFLPA deal only covers active NFL players; licensing for retired athletes is handled separately. In that manner, Montana appeared with nearly 240 former NFL athletes in 2007's All-Pro Football 2K8, the first (and to date, only) football game from 2K Sports after EA secured its original exclusive contracts in 2004 for the Madden NFL series.

Montana, who played for the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs over a 16-year career from 1979 to 1994, previously starred in a series of football video games published by Sega in the early 1990s. The franchise began with 1990's Joe Montana Football on the Sega Master System, Genesis and MS-DOS, and concluded in 1994 with NFL '95.

and how it was a "talking" game with real voices. That was revolutionary at the time! Then Madden came out and it was over.

They didn't call offsides, lol. I'd have Reggie White standing right next to the QB as he snaps. I'd take a whole day to trade everybody with 90+ rating to the Falcons and go undefeated.

I was awful on kick return, but Emmitt Smith on the HB Screen was killer.

I loved the snowy field, too because the game came out before the Falcons got the Dome.

that other 2k Pro Football shit with retired players was missing the license. Not enough retired players to fill all the rosters. So the made up players ended up being wack.

They opted to take it out since it was dealing with legends from different time periods & felt it couldn't properly balance it because the players don't age & stuff. It had nothing to do with gameplay or NFL licensing

Microsoft has no problem burning cash away and want this to be their MLB The Show.

If they make it cheap, superior, and heavily advertise it...it might make a dent considering how many sports gamers are xbox owners. Maddens by far the leader and will remain so, but considering the exclusive deal is up in 2022 they might have built enough of a loyal fanbase that they can be a true rival.

Either way, it will force Madden to step their game up if its really as good a product as they say, which is great for everyone.

I can't find it through Google, I heard about it through the latest Bombast's email section:

http://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/giant-bombcast-03-17-2015/1600-1163/

I can't give you a perfect timestamp but it's from the emails section (I think, maybe it was news, which was 30-45 mins before that) which starts around 2:30 or so. Some pretty bold claims that are hard to believe were made in the post which means it should all be taken as a grain of salt, but from what I remember the guy said it was Unreal Engine 4, being developed by Visual Concepts, was releasing in July alongside the launch of Windows 10 as the showcase for Xbox One / Windows 10 compatibility, would have NFL licensing (the screenshot Montana posted leads one to believe at least this is false) due to some clause in Microsoft's Surface contract with the league, and is essentially built on the foundation of the 2K games with the goal of becoming Microsoft's version of Sony's MLB The Show.

Because of the league licensing claim and some other stuff I can't entirely endorse it but I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft wanted an exclusive football game to separate itself from Sony's exclusive baseball crowd. It's just a question of whether Xbox owners would ditch Madden for a better playing, non-licensed game. If it has licenses that's a different story but I think if it did we'd have heard a lot more about this game a lot sooner than four months out from release.

Someone will create the NFL rosters within the first week of release.

They would also have to make the likenesses as close as they can without getting sued.

Can a sports game be successful without a license? Is there a way to pull a game off without the licenses? Maybe a completely virtual league with user-created players?

The teams were made of aliens, trolls, skeletons, and robots. Players could be killed in the middle of the game. You could bribe the ref or even kill the ref as well. The field had landmines and fire pits.

Major League Baseball and Winning Run. Then they got the license when they went 3D, around the same time every console maker had a licensed sports game (lest we forget Nintendo had those Kobe Bryant and QB Club games as well) and that era pretty much killed the non-licensed sports game.

But outside of rare cases, you still needed SOME kind of name to sell your game, whether it was a coach (Walsh, Madden), a player (Montana, Bird, Jordan) or the entire league even back when sports games were simple and the gameplay mattered more than the simulation.

It's always crazy to think about sports games, though. A little over a decade ago every sport had so many options:

Football - QB Club, NCAA Football, Gameday, Madden, Blitz, NCAA Gamebreaker, NFL Fever...

Basketball - Live, 2K, NBA Street, Hoopz (descendant of Jam), March Madness, NCAA Final Four, Kobe's Courtside...

Hockey - NHL, FaceOff, 2K...

Baseball - Triple Play, 2K, 989 MLB, Griffey's Slugfest...

and now there's basically one game for each sport.

the options back then were great. Gameplay was the focus. Now game makers know they can sell because they have a license. It was a better day then.

A good game (gameplay, graphics, 'storyline') usually sells in some degree.

But weren't development costs, at least for a game that uses the cutting edge technology that this game would use, lower back then than now?

Or at least with the cartridges and the number of systems, the developers had a better sense of the numbers a game might need to be successful?

Every year people come back to here, and I'm sure other forums, and complain about how sorry Madden and the rest of the games with the exclusive licenses are. Part of the reason is nostalgia, but there's some truth that with the exception of EA rebuilding and the shelving NBA Live, none of the exclusive license games are radically different year to year except for change in hardware.

I don't follow this stuff at all but y'alls speculations about the roster stuff have me curious.

If the game came out and was customizable in such a way that you could create and share custom rosters and player designs, and let's say for argument's sake someone created the current rosters and logos for the nfl teams, could EA and the NFL do anything about this?

Is there any precedent for this kind of thing?

It almost seems like it would turn into a file-sharing dilemma where perhaps NFL/EA would look to Sony/Microsoft to police the sharing of the profiles as infringement.

I'd mail an xbox memory card and a $5 "donation" to a guy and he'd load the rosters and mail it back to me.

actually I did it one year, and then the next year I'd been on the FFXI beta (entered it mainly for the Hard Drive, which Sony decided to take back BUT send beta testers a free one for their trouble...which I proceeded to only use for the 2K Sports halftime highlights features basically) so I had keyboard for my PS2 and had the real dumb idea to just do the rosters manually via ESPN's depth charts.

Those things were NOT very accurate in the early 2000s, and neither were the NCAA rosters in terms of player size/jersey number.

So of course I helped make one of the first OperationSports PS3 NCAA rosters once roster sharing became available. Because it was so fun to do that all over again. Luckily we were cribbing from an excel spreadsheet made by the main dude doing 360 rosters, one of the few times I was glad 360 was the more popular console last generation. Didn't need any original work!

I would have been happy to partake in that. From about 2003 to 2007, I geeked over nothing harder than NCAA Football. Kinda sad, although I do look back fondly on that game.

I played NCAA for months, got the Heisman 3 out of 4 years, and still got drafted in the 2nd round in Madden.
