It looks like Apple is trying to go "Portless" one day soon. This is pretty drastic.

Didn't Nokia beat Apple with an Android tablet with USB C?

"ultrabook" in Intel's nomenclature... you're not editing video or working in Lightroom on this thing. It's perfect for my job, systems admin work. It reminds me of the Chromebook Pixel.

That's my next Mac. It's gorgeous.

Some of the bands cost $7,000. That's 3.5 entry level macBook Pros.

Let's hope this shit bombs, except for the sport.

But you're not exactly right either. This is targeting the Chinese market. They thought the 5C was going to appeal to China and that bombed. So they went in the complete other direction, hired Ahrendts and Deneve, and targeted the ultra-lux.

And they're gonna kill on it.

>Let's hope this shit bombs, except for the sport.

>But it won't. And I'm surprised to hear you so negative
>towards Apple.

They rarely do anything this boneheaded - or maybe this is a new - wrong- direction.

In the past Apple has been accused of charging a "premium" for their products based on aesthetic reasons, like a fancy box, or something like that. In reality the "premium" is usually there as a margin they want so they can make a profit, it's much larger than the commodity PC makers, but it was never - NEVER - for fashion reasons.

Apple's design has been what they think is attractive, they sometimes omit features, but they've never mad a Mac that cost 10 times what a similar mac has cost for fashion reasons. (You could argue the 14" Black iBook costing $100 more than the white as a precedent, but that was only a 8% premium, so I wasn't that upset. And we bought the white one instead.) (Oh, and the Twentieth Anniversary Mac - that was an absolute failure too.)

Apple has accumulated 175 billion dollars by making a few hundred dollars profit off of selling hundreds of millions of items. I don't see how this boutique move is going to help them.

I think Jony Ive's personal taste are what's pushing this. He's a super rich asshole who likes this kind of stuff (which is his right.)

Forbes says Rolex makes about 4.7 billion dollars a year in total revenue. Apple makes 2.5 times that one a slow quarter IN PROFIT. Prada makes 5 billion. It's peanuts.

I just don't see how that fits into their business as anything more than a distraction.

A $349 fitness watch is pretty expensive already - and add some $50 to $100 bands and maybe it's iPod nano size business. *
At least that business exists here.*

But they're wasting a lot of energy on the luxury market, IMHO.

I hate to say this, but if Steve was alive he might have tempered this fashion part down a bit. Steve was the ultimate super rich asshole but he never aimed at the luxury Market.

Though I'm always hesitant to compare balance sheets between companies with entirely different business models, but I get what you're saying.

Jony Ive may have had a hand in this but this is Tim Cook's company now. I agree that if Jobs was still at the helm we likely would never have seen this happen.

I was actually talking about this with a coworker today. Jobs is a visionary, Cook is a CEO. Jobs won't compromise his vision for the business, while Cook is more flexible to make *business* decisions. Make no mistake, this is Cook's company through and through. But while Jobs had the cultural cachet that Cook lacks, Cook adjusted by leaning on those with that flair (like Dre and Ahrendts).

We'll see if their foray into "fashionable" products will be successful, but in business terms it absolutely makes sense to leverage your strengths... and that Apple brand is incredibly strong.

I don't think Apple will regret the "energy" spent on the luxury market though.. unless something extreme happens, like that 18 hour battery really only lasting 3, or something like that.

True or false:

You need to have your iPhone on you to get any function out of the watch.

I cannot find a single source that answers this question, and I feel like I'm losing my mind.

Simply put, can someone go for a jog with this watch and leave their phone at home, and still get calls, listen to music, hearbeat sensor/GPS, all that?

With that apple drone response. What if I want to plug in a mouse, and my portable hard drive and hook it up to a big screen projector. Something alot of us do at work on a daily basis. How many overpriced USB-C bridges do I need to buy from only apple to do this?

This computer's only good if you're actually using it as a portable. Wireless networking, wireless printer, wireless projector (via Apple TV?)

I'm still confounded on why they didn't include ethernet on my 15" Mac Pro.

The "rumor" was that Apple would introduce a hub/dock with this, but I didn't see an announcement for it.

I get the target for some of these watches are for the same people that will get a Chopard,Franck Mueller, IWC, Omega, Rolex, etc. But that seems a bit short sighted. While you can view those watches as pieces of jewelry or art, they can also be (and often are) passed down as heirlooms over the years and appreciate over time. I can't see a $10,000 watch, which is essentially a bluetooth tethered computer, doing the same thing. Once the updates and support stop for it (which, being a computer, has to happen at some point) I'm left with a very expensive, very compromised arm band that's worth about the same amount as a Swatch.

Edit: Article on the nouveau rich in China... note that it was written in 2012

http://gbtimes.com/life/materialism-and-status-symbols-china

What about ‘normal’ people, you may wonder… the ones on the street, your average Chinese? Well, they may not be able to afford a Rolls Royce, but they will try to own a famous Apple product. The craze associated with this brand has grown to epic proportions in China, with the demand of iPhones far exceeding supply.

What's interesting is that this "flashy" craze has some backlash amongst the *insanely* rich in China, where they actually prefer to keep their wealth hidden around the "common" folk. There's a particular community of these folk in SoCal:

Hell, I don't even own an iPhone. Just something I thought of while reading some of the articles on them and the justification for the Apple Edition's price. Somebody's going to buy them, so kudos to them, rational or not. Then again, 'I got money' is always a good reason for some, so there's that

people are gonna upgrade these less often than tablets.
and it already looks dated not to mention it will be in a couple of years.
and it looks like a smartwatch
id much rather have a watch that happens to be a smartwatch.
the stuntin will go hard on this one. not in a good way. in a google glass kinda way.
they are going hard on the first iteration. should gauge the market first and then release the 2nd gen luxury models.
all that to say they will sell a bajillion of these still.

Had black in cart shipping on 4/24 but it kept asking me to enter my phone number (even though it was clearly there) and kept rejecting me.

By the time that worked the shipping date slipped.

So I went with the blue and got 4/24 shipping.

Either they had very little to sell or everyone wanted one.

I just wish if you had one in your cart that the ship date would be guaranteed during checkout process.

69. "So I tried them on"
In response to Reply # 66

Got an appointment for 8:15pm today. The stores have a BUNCH of Apple Watch displays that let you use the watch but not try it on.

I tried on both the 38MM and the 42MM. (Remember I pre-ordered the 38mm for price reason alone.) I normally where Timex watches, and I wore my t2M45 which has a 40mm face and 11.6mm hight the store. (Picture of the Timex here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SQKJZ2)

The 38MM was smaller than I though, but doing some match the 42mm screen size is 15% bigger. Both sizes' width and height are very comfortable, I thought it would be too thick.

I think 38mm will be fine, but 42mm would have been better.

The interface is kind of confusing until you play with it for a bit.

The swipe up for glances didn't work everywhere I thought it would. The swipe down for notifications did.

Force touch was a little weird, and the taptic feedback was a little light.

I hike a lot (or used to, need to start again) around 40 miles a month (used to do 100+) and being able to track heart rate, see notifications without fishing the phone out of my pocket and maybe use a podcast client on the watch all seem like things this will accomplish.

They always have a 15 day return period.

It's really f'ing small.

Screen looks good.

Keyboard is weird but I opened a document and typed a few paragraph and it got every letter I meant to type.

The gold color one looks cool.

That new track pad feels like you're clicking it - it's no bullshit. I turned the machine off and there's no click. Back on and it's click everywhere including the very top.

USB-C connector was fine - couldn't test bumping it and seeing if it'd release.

Oh, and for $1299 you do get a 256GB HD, the MacBook Pro's still at 128GB

If I traveled A LOT and just needed to blog or email or office then it'd be good - but right now its not the machine for me.

But it's SMALL.

The new 13.3 inch MacBook Pro with Retina is on sale for $1099. BUT they have open box ones for $978.

PLUS if you go down to the post office and ask for a change of address packet they have Best Buy 10% codes inside them. These codes used to not work on open box items, but it worked today.

Long story short you can get the new ForceTouch MacBook Pro for $881 before tax.

Thew new 12" is not on sale, but hey when can you get a Macbook Pro for $881?

Apple wouldn't let you pre-sign and required a signature so I had to schlep down to UPS after work to get it (plus a NewEgg delivery.)

There were at least 40 people picking up their watches too - so Apple requiring a signature and not allow pre-signing wasted at least 20 hours of people's time at this single location

The packaging was super lame - it's filled with useless protectors, sticky covers, pieces of paper, and the hard case might be good for travel, but it feels and looks cheap and that it'll yellow over time. I'd much rather have had it be like "normal watch" packaging.

I'll use it tomorrow when I go for a hike and report back.

Had it delivered to work and got it by 10 AM.

I liked the packaging a lot. But then again I expected something more like this:

https://hazqtechtalk.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/dsc_0326.jpg

I work at a department store and we sell a ton of more expensive watches that have much crapper packaging.

Also unlike some I'm ok with the plastic sport charger vs the stainless version because the back isn't sapphire and it because also matches my other chargers nicely.

Gonna go to work in a bit and see how the battery holds up.

I actually like this package better than what shipped with the sport. IF your going to ship in a case like that it should have room for the charger too, IMHO.

Check this photo of the hard case:
http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Apple-Watch-Unboxing-DSC_0210.jpg

Notice it has a band installed and fits perfectly - well the issue is that that's the smaller of the two bands on it, so if you put the larger strap on you can't use that case as a hard protector.

I haven't been able to work out with it on due to an injury, but I can tell you the heartrate reading matched 100% the reading the doctor's machine took this morning - 63 BPM on both.

For heart rate tracking is was very good.

As for checking text messages on my phone or reading RSS feeds of CNN stories, etc, it's okay.

I don't have a lot of notifications on my phone, I don't get a ton of texts or emails I have to see immedaitely so it's not something I really care about.

The sport band was really good (I had the blue.)

People complaining about the thickness either have very expensive think watches or have never owned a watch. it's the same as my cheap Timexs.

Wasn't crazy about the charger, it's fine but it did it impress me.

The watch faces and the info they can show is great.

I found I pressed the crown thinking it'd always get me back to the watch but sometimes it gets you to the app selecting screen - which I rarely needed to go to.

I flipped it for a profit of $100 so I really liked it

In response to Reply # 85

There are two kinds of Apps: Apple's Apps and other Apps

Apple's apps were not slow at all because they are always on the watch.

The other Apps would launch kind of slowly but nothing bad - I mainly used Nike + Running and Overcast - both of which responded well.

The "Glances" from those two apps are what I interacted with the most.

Nothing was so slow that I was like "HURRY UP!" but it's not iPhone fast.

Now other apps may be faster of slower depending on how they're written and what assets need to be transferred to the watch.

One thing that was disappointing was that the heart rate data could not be shared with the Nike application - only with Apple's health.

And let me repeat this: The watch faces are great and the band is nice. And if you get one and don't like it you can probably flip it like I did, or just return within 14 days for a full refund.

After selling my initial Apple Watch (at a profit) I received one for my birthday.

This time it's a 42mm Black Sport Watch.

My criticism of the 38mm blue what case is not true for the 42mm.

The 38mm comes with a hard case that fits the small sized band.

The 42mm comes with a hard case that fits the large sized band. (This makes more sense because it will also accommodate the small size band.)

I've not done anything at all with the watch yet, it just arrived in the mail.
