The original Nintendo was about dead. Sony had yet to announce the original Playstation. Not sure if this was the height of the original console wars between SNES and the Genesis, but it was definitely the earliest I remember having to choose which system I'd get a game on.
I had just convinced my brother to go in with me on buying the Sega CD. It was a bust of a system so far with the two games I had: Sewer Shark & Prize Fighter. The latter was a motion capture boxing game. Horrible. Think Dragon's Lair but boxing. I have about 5 video game Ls, and the Sega CD along with Prize Fighter are two of them. (The Power Glove, the NES advantage and renting the Playstation console from the local video store instead of just saving up to buy it.) But we got Sonic CD which became arguably the best in the series.
Also, my friends and I would travel to Hesterman's Bowl because they had the new Mortal Kombat II machine. It was the first time I recognized the culture of putting your quarter on the machine for calling next. There was always this kid playing running the machine, pulling off flawless victories and these new finishing moves called friendships and babalities. I was never a Street Fighter guy, and the original Mortal Kombat didn't do anything for me. But Mortal Kombat 2 was an amazing sequel.
I also was introduced to two Lucas Arts games, Day Of The Tentacle which is regarded as a PC classic, and Sam And Max Hit The Road, the first PC game I beat without any cheat codes. Granted the game wasn't that hard, but it was fun.

Tetris, Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 were all I played. Had this top-down martial arts game as well but it wasn't very good. Could beat Mario Land front to back no problem, tiny sprites and all, but I didn't have the courage to beat the sequel until a few years later. I could beat 5 out of the 6 zones easily, but always had problems with the Star Zone, specifically that autoscrolling stage. SML2 was an incredible game though, much better than the original.
My cousin would bring his Famicom/NES to our grandparents' place every now and then, and we'd play that. Can't remember the games he had, think we usually played Mario 3.
Moved downunder in late 93, and my parents somehow convinced me to get the Mega Drive, even though I wanted the SNES with Mario All-Stars, a decision I still regret to this day. I got Sonic 2 and Batman Returns with the MD. Sonic 2 was all right, but I didn't love it like Mario, and Batman Returns was...well I don't think I've ever gotten past the 2nd stage.

parents wouldn't buy me video game systems, so I had to make do. Sierra games were my jam -- King's Quest, Police Quest, Manhunter, Hero's Quest. Also remember when we had to buy a new 15MB hard-drive in order to play Wing Commander 2, because whatever the install was exceeded what we had. Also remember when we had to upgrade to 8MB RAM in order to play NHL 94, one of the best decisions my family ever made. Oh yeah, and that was roughly Doom 2 era, definitely pirated all those 'shareware' type games. Duke Nukem was one of those, too. I have no idea how game publishers were making money back then, because I never paid for shit lol.

my timeline is all messed up now that I try to put it together. I've thought I started kindergarten in 1995 for the longest time but it must have been 1993 or 1994...
Man I really don't remember so let's assume I was still living in my old neighborhood where my cousin lived and he had the SNES in his basement and I was mad jealous. He had a power glove, Star Fox, Link to the Past (which was baffling to me at the time, I used to sit and try to understand that game in total darkness while my cousins would be outside playing basketball and my aunt would ask me why she even lets me over if I'm gonna ignore them and play with their toys in the dark all summer).
They had Myst which I thought was pretty but dumb, it's weird just how popular that game really was.
Honestly I don't think I really started playing games until 1994.
Oh wait no we had a couple PC games then, X-Wing is the only specific one I can remember and a ton of shareware stuff from AOL's ANTagonist Games keyword page.
Haha, my little bro and I were on that page constantly. Dirt Bike, Glypha III, Wolfenstein...probably others that escape me. The shareware stuff was huge. Lots of funky homebrew stuff in there. The Ambrosia shareware stuff like Avara and Harry the Handsome Executive got a lot of play in our house as well.
I never liked Myst, either.

and then came home and played more Street Fighter. Moved to ATL for college in the mid-90s and would leave class and head right to the underground arcade for more gaming.

went to a boarding academy then college dorm so there were lots of sports games and fighting games on SNES and Genesis. I remember Alter Beast, SF, Mortal Kombat, RBI and a gang of Madden (which everyone wanted to play me since I talked so much shit)

He was playing stuff like Wing Commander, Star Wars. All the Kings Quest games. Fallout. Street Fighter 2.
I also had a computer but it wasn't as good as his. Played all the same games but alot of the oldies like AD&D: Pools of Radiance, Ultima, Heroes of Might & Magic.
I had a Sega Genesis before I had a SNES. After I was done playing all the great stuff on Genesis I got a SNES and played all those games so I was a few years behind and had my SNES way into my senior year of HS (1995)

Any other fighting game (Mortal, Sam. Showdown) were only played in the event the line to get down with Chun Li was too long or the machine was broken (playing with no forward kick was impossible with her)
