entirely linear.
but also a game ass game. a legit, old school, puzzle platformer.
but also story driven from beginning to end.
the balance is not impossible, but it is more difficult to maintain as you introduce more gameplay variety. after all, the player is only free in Limbo to walk, jump, and push things.
emergent, open games offer a compelling type of story discovery because it FEELS authored by the player, but that's an illusion. the game's design is still limiting the kinds of stories we discover.
avoiding overt narrative and maximizing gameplay variety, like Minecraft, is a choice, but is it THE one true choice? i don't think so. Minecraft is special because it's kind of an outlier in its devotion to that choice.
balancing varied gameplay with branching and procedural narratives, like Skyrim, is another choice.
going linear with designated cutscenes and gameplay arenas, like The Last of Us, yet another.
games can have no story like Pong, or be Gone Home: a simple story maze with no fail state.
i like all them choices.
video games are a dope medium because that push and pull between mechanics and narrative can express itself in so many ways. i love when it all balances out, but sometimes when it fails to balance out it's hella interesting too. -30- You know it's drama, but it sound real good.
