"Dragon Age: Inquisition"

I know I saw a few replies about it in a different thread but I figured I would start the official thread....I was going to hold out on copping a ps4 until FFXV and/or MGS5 came out but DA is one of my fav series and combined with all the reviews, I had to cave in.

Only about an hour in so just getting started but these visuals and scale are pretty damn impressive thus far.

So far I mean it's just not my type of game. I'm trying to get into it but hell I had more fun with Diablo. This is for those who like all that dialogue and choices of an RPG. I just want to kill and kill more with some style. So it's really not my type of game.

The early part is a lot of dialogue but the missions get better and there is a lot of hack and slash action. Once you get your groups powers up it's pretty dope.

The first area they send you to once you have your initial group is a time waste. Leave that spot as soon as you can, the story and action progress better afterwards.

It's essentially just a tutorial and it's way too big. I just got to the storm coast and it's such a better map plus more integrated storyline aspects.

I wouldn't have copped at full retail. But at $39 I was like what the hell. Drawn out games like this never get my full attention. But since I've paid for it and it's digital I guess I'll play it to the end.

I still think that if you give it a decent shot, it'll be right up your alley as an action-oriented game but with more thought behind it, hah

As for DA:I though, I'm gonna jump in once I find a big chunk of time. LOVED the first, skipped the second, and I've always wanted to revisit the world. Really digging what I've read about DA:I so far.

i've said this before in another post but dark souls is a legitimate classic that will be revered, studied, and copied in the coming years. what makes it so good is that it requires the use of gaming muscles you haven't used in decades and as a result scratches itches you forgot about. accomplishing tasks such as beating bosses, discovering secrets, and memorizing the game world feels very good, much better than it does in most modern games that constantly hold your hand and tell you the exact location of everything in the game world. it's easily my favorite game of the previous generation

AND you can get it on PC for a song if you wait for a steam/gmg/amazon sale. the pc port is junk but you can install a small program that fixes all the problems with the port and enables the game to run at 4k resolution, which makes it look a lot better than the console versions. the art design in that game is fantastic and holds up under tight scrutiny (such as viewing it in ~2.5 times the intended resolution)

>I just want to kill and kill more with some style. So it's really not my type of game.

in case you don't know about DD:

it's capcom's take on western games like skyrim, made by a team composed of former devil may cry and resident evil devs. you can see that development pedigree reflected in the gameplay. the controls are super responsive, there are tons of combos to employ, and the combat is nuanced to the point of having cancellable attacks like a fighting game or bayonetta. it also has shadow of the colossus-style boss fights in which your character is climbing on the back of cyclopses (just one of many types of bossses) to stab their eye for bonus damage and a stun. it's a lot of fun to play

the downsides are that the story isn't great, the menus are clunky, the upgrade/item/crafting systems aren't that good or well-explained, and the open world isn't particularly interesting

but it's really fun to run around and get into fights with groups of traditional western-style fantasy monsters and bust out devil may cry type combos on them

the latest version called dragon's dogma: dark arisen should be on the 360 and/or ps3 store for a decent price or you could probably get it on amazon for ~$30

That was always a serious problem for me in the first two...it was somewhat frustrating in trying to organize my battles, particularly with positioning. The new interface is very intuitive and user friendly. My only issue thus far is that the tactics/gambit system for the characters seems to have been significantly dumbed down.

The combination of high level decision making (in the war room) combined with the grind of the missions.....so good imo. Just got to the Fallow Mire, incredible map.

And I still haven't finished it!

Mostly because I got busy and other things came out, I didn't want to burn myself out on this so I stopped for a bit. Played some more last night and fell back in love with it again.

The epic scale of the game after you leave the Hinterlands is just what I look for in a game like this.

People that play and don't care for it really have to get past that first area. Once you do the story really opens up and you actually give a crap about whats going on.

Haven't been this engaged in a story and my character since the Mass Effect series.

Where you pick between the mages or the Templars. Storyline wise it's right after Val Royeaux...so you can easily get there in 5 or so hours. I'm in the middle of the mage story and it's a whole lot of fun.

do you know how happy i was to discover that after creating my character, part of the dalish belief system is the idea that humans have corrupted their lands and that the dalish are waiting for the day when the humans will abandon it, as is the way of humans to do? that made me smile. i constantly tell people that i am not the herald of andraste and my gods are dalish. sometimes a game hits that sweet spot of wish fulfillment.

Yeah, bought it when it dropped, as I had just moved and gotten an XB1.

played like two hours of it and was confused and bored.

Decided to give it another go and I'm pretty pleased. Really good game, really deep customization and crafting.

Still doesn't feel totally as coherent as a Fallout or Skyrim, but it's a damn good game and the graphics are top notch.

A few tech failings here and there, but nothing game breaking. Not sure if I'll pony up for the DLC yet, but trying to grind through this main campaign.

I just beat this a week back....lets just say I had a lot of other shit going on lol. I probably spent a solid 100+ hours on the game, thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it...the level of detail is pretty incredible. My one major gripe is that the game throws a lot of heavier material in the final couple missions but I never felt the weight of some of that elven history and such because it was still so new...it wasn't really earned so I couldn't quite feel the gravity of some of the revelations that happened.

In terms of battling, once I optimized my party in terms of role + customized weapons, the game was pretty much cake, and I absolutely wrecked the final 3 dragons once I got serious about killing them. My line-up was:

- Blackwall as the tank of course with custom shield and armor, with huge guard bonuses
- Myself as the 2-handed warrior with custom sword + armor, with Reaver specialization (whose damge output is kinda ridiculuous...with the upgraded ring of pain + dragons rage + devour, we're talking 3k+ damage on any enemy including the dragons with the ability to constantly heal via devour)
- Cole as the assassin with 2 custom 2-handed blades, doing 3k+ damage in stealth
- Solas/Dorian for barrier + magic capabilities. Prob the least important aspect of the party but solid crowd control and supplementary damage. I used Dorian for most of the game because he's just fun to have around and then went with Solas for the latter 1/3 due to the heavier elf story-line elements.

I started this game back up because of this thread. I never actually beat it because I got stuck at the level where you meet the Empress or whatever

This play through is going a little better because I was smarter with my build (mage this time) and I couldn't get past the first stage because the slow ass PS4 was still downloading it, so I spent hella time grinding.

Good journey, but toward the end I sorta wanted to get it over with. I was a level 21 two handed warrior and figured I had enough horses to pull it off. I've killed 5 of the ten dragons, so why not?

Liked the ending, good twists for the sequel. After a few beers I dropped the cash for all the DLC, and I'll be delving into that.

Definitely an improvement playwise over the first two. I wouldn't mind another one done in the same style with a few more refinements and minus the fetch quests (shards)

I had to leave some stuff for later. The Hissing Wastes were just so damn huge, I said fuggit and just finished the game.
