"You guys are smart: Help me get back into Gaming"

(Well, I've been into gaming, but checked out recently,
for whatever reason)

This is NOT one of these:

"I can't decide between X, and Y, tell me what to buy!!" posts

Its not only about products.

I'm asking because you folks are genuinely smart and thoughtful,
and having recently learned about all of the craziness going on
in the gaming world, I'm emboldened to get back into it (weird
conclusion; perhaps I should just say f*ck it and not bother).

I wanna know:

What blogs do you read? What systems do you own? Games for
smartphone, tablet, computer (I own a MBP). What youtube
channels and twitter accounts? Big games, indy games,
whatever.

Recommend systems. Recommend games. I'd rather this be
POSITIVE rather than negative. Tell me where to go, rather
than where not to go. Tell me who you LIKE, rather who you
DON'T like.

I do NOT want to launch one of "those" conversations. Let me
and anyone else decide for ourselves whether we like the content
or not. Again, I'm asking because I TRUST y'alls opinion.

I want the smart people's perspective. Not the leviathan
(to which some of you might be belong; difference is I know
you all as individuals, and believe you are independent
thinkers)

but I'd recommend starting off w/ small stuff and indie games, some of them are actually designed around the amount of time adults w/ jobs have to play games (a half hour or an hour here and there)

Other than the fact that you like broken systems, I like
what you like: Sports, Sci-Fi, Comics

RPGs and shit that people who like to think like

I'll play a shooter if its good

What are these "indie" games that you speak of? Where
does one find them? I literally know nothing about this
culture

http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2013/12/the-20-best-indie-videogames-of-2013.html

"Indie" basically means what it means in the music business; it's not a game published by Ubisoft, EA, Take Two, Activision or Bethesda (plus a few others). Generally smaller teams of 3-10 people working on a game with a very specific focus, often leaning on one or two new ideas and making them feel as tight as possible.

From this list (which is out of date and many of them have appeared on other platforms) I'd easily recommend Rogue Legacy, Papers Please, Proteus, Antichamber and The Swapper. Outside that list I'd add Hotline Miami, Limbo, Super Meat Boy, FTL, Spelunky, Lone Survivor and Bastion.

If you're open minded to the types of gameplay that can exist out there, indie games is where it's at. Some really creative games out there that twist and blend genres, while often creating whole new ones out right.

Another great thing about indies is that they're typically playable on low-end PC's and/or mobile platforms (ie, no need to jump feet first into pricier console gaming if you just want a taste).

Of that (great) list of games that Nodima recommended, I would personally suggest:

Papers Please: You work border patrol for an Eastern Bloc-ish fictional country set in a Cold War world. Gameplay can get repetitive in later stages, but the surprising immersion in the story (Do I take this bribe to provide heat for my family? Do I bust this foreigner for a bad ID when I just let her husband through) really carries this title. There are compelling moral quandaries in here that you don't really see in many video games to this degree.

Antichamber: Puzzle mindfuck. Forget all your presuppositions about physics and geometry and everything logical, and start from scratch. Great game to play not sober.

FTL: Also playable on iOS tablets. Have you ever watched Star Trek/Star Wars/whatever science fiction and wondered what it'd be like to pilot one of those ships getting busted up, with fires and hull breaches and crew dying because of motherfuckers that keep shooting at you? Then this is the game for you. Easily one of my favorite games of the last 5 years, indie or not... I've put in at least hundreds of hours on a $5 investment.

And one more not mentioned by Nodima, The Binding of Isaac:

New remastered version is coming out soon, but original version is typically less than $2. Total throwback to old school NES Legend of Zelda dungeon crawling with a quirky gothic theme. All action and the more you play the crazier it gets.

http://www.giantbomb.com / Giant Bombcast. Ryan Davis passed away last year but the site remains as joyful as ever, I watch/read/listen to just about everything they do at this point, even their F1 and wrestling podcasts and I don't even watch those things.

A lot of their best stuff is behind a subscription but the podcast is free.

this is their most recent free video, going through a bunch of old CD-I games most've probably never seen: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/cd-i-dont-know-about-these-games-man/2300-9419/

If you'd have asked a year ago I'd say the easiest way would've been to get a PS3 and a PS+ subscription. In the past two years I've received the following games from the program (along with Giantbomb, the biggest reason I stopped being a dude that just bought NBA 2K and whatever Rockstar put out every year): Fez, Outlast, Tomb Raider, Super Street Fighter IV AE, Mercenary Kings, Dyad, Hotline Miami, Remember Me, DmC Devil May Cry, NBA 2K14 (PS3), Resogun, Brothers, GRID 2, Binary Domain, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, XCOM Enemy Unknown, Bit.Trip Runner 2, Saints Row The Third, Bioshock Infinite (I bought this but it was PS+), Uncharted 3 (bought but PS+), Sleeping Dogs, Joe Danger 2, Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Spec Ops: The Line, Just Cause 2, Assassin's Creed II, Machinarium ,Batman Arkham City, Portal 2, Outland, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, Renegade Ops, inFamous 2, Virtua Fighter 5, Sonic 2.

I've got to assume it'll remain as fantastic a service going forward but 2014 has paled in comparison to 2012/2013.

Don't have too much else to say right now, I'd need more guidance as to what you're into, but my quickest recommendation is a PS3 (or 4) and a PS+ subscription. And listen to / watch a ton of Giantbomb stuff. Those dudes are seriously killing it on enthusiast coverage of a medium; Grantland could learn a lot from how they push personality-based pop culture coverage without an overwhelming sense of corporate lordship.

So it's mostly shooters and sports games for me.

I really liked some of the new Xbox one games - titanfall and dead rising were cool. Forza motorsport is another great game that doesn't take up too much time for a few races in a session.

For the older systems I liked forza horizon a lot, gears of war series was great, and halo series is one of my favorites to play with friends.

I usually don't really have time or patience to get into skyrim or fallout type games. But there are a couple open world games that I like. Grand theft auto has always been one of my favorites.

The game was shit when it came out but it's great now after a zillion patches and an expansion.

Id go with a PS4 honestly. Steam is very cool but I like having a separate system for gaming for whatever reason. Also, most of the quality indies come to the consoles eventually. PS4 seems to have way better relationships indie developers than Microsoft. You can't go wrong with either system honestly. Both are really nice machines that are worth the money. 2015 looks like it's going to be a banner year game-wise.

you can check out www.toucharcade.com and go through their highest rated games to get started.

I've finally hooked myself into Fallout New Vegas on my 360 and hope to parlay that to finishing GTAV and The Witcher 2 which are some really good games to get that gaming feeling back.

The offspring :-D
