BY MITCH DYERRise of the Tomb Raider is an Xbox One exclusive, Microsoft announced during its press briefing at Gamescom 2014.

Crystal Dynamics' Darrell Gallagher explained, "we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft." He continued, "This doesn�t mean that we�re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4."

"In the next chapter of her journey, Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider," Microsoft said during Rise of the Tomb Raider's E3 announcement. "Featuring epic, high-octane action moments, Rise of the Tomb Raider will take gamers to multiple locations around the world filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth. how are you going to complain about a game's sales (when it hit like five million), make it a PS+ game and deep discount the HD upgrade on PS4, not to mention the series' long ass roots on Playstation, and then just cut your audience down by 2/3s like that?

last i heard ps4 was outselling xbone by a wide margin. that exclusivity contract must be extremely lucrative for them to be missing out on so many potential ps4 sales

I don't know if the Xbox number is even sold through to customers. The 10 million number for Sony is actual boxes in homes.

It doesn't relate to the huge hardware sales almost as if many people buy the system and don't do much with it.

i got zero boxed games for my ps4.

but i got 28 games on my hard drive.

paid a full $60 for about a third of them.

PSN has encouraged fullgame downloads more than XBL these past few years.

my PS3 has over 90 games on it.

my 360 probably has half of that.

i got way more physical 360 games than PS3, tho.

this time around i have zero boxed games for both platforms.

i only have like 6 games for my XBO, tho.

until NPD tracks digital games, we won't know what's really happening.

Phil Spencer's come out and said what most of us were thinking, that at some point this game will be everywhere, but likely not until the following spring/summer.

The reason this bugs me more than, say, not being able to play Halo or Sunset Overdrive is that was a choice I made when I bought into the Playstation brand however many years ago. I wanted to stick with Nintendo, but I couldn't justify it, and if I couldn't justify Mario and Zelda I certainly can't justify Microsoft's exclusives. I knew I wouldn't get to play Microsoft's games.

But Tomb Raider's (save Tomb Raider II and III, which Sony bought out completely and helped push the original Playstation over the edge in popularity) always been a multi-console series, and the last one was everywhere. If you liked that game it'd be reasonable to expect you could play the new one wherever you want.

I don't mind waiting for games, hell I didn't play the first one until it was free on PS+. It's just weird that third parties still see a value add in these timed exclusivity deals.

Pre-order bonuses and retailer-exclusive bonuses are way, way worse though.

and I don't like the XBox controller at all. The stick placement bugs me out. The d-pad stinks (stunk anyway, I haven't held a One controller). I might've liked Gears or PGR or Forza but nothing else on the XBox has ever stood out to me (even Halo). Last generation I also had the free vs. paid online services thing in my favor until I just couldn't resist PS+.


I don't really mean I "bought in"; if Nintendo ever made a great, connected, third-party friendly system there'd be a good chance I'd go back to Nintendo, although losing Naughty Dog games would be a major pain. But owning two consoles just doesn't make a lot of sense to me anymore, I've gotten back into games more than I had for most of the PS3-era when it was all Rockstar and NBA 2K mainly until PS+ hit, but I still can't justify two consoles. 3/4 of the games I've played the past two years were PS+ freebies; I'd buy about five games a year otherwise.


The only time in my life I feel like it was truly justifiable/affordable was PS1/N64. Probably SNES/Genesis too, but I was young enough that that shit MATTERED back then and I wouldn't be caught dead with a Genesis in my house.

shock 4 tho, that battery life is horrendous. I mean my
goodness. If I play on it today for 2 hours, I guarantee it
will be down to 1 bar after I'm done. I was charging it after
every Last of Us session. I'm like WTF. I charge that xb1
joint like once every month...maybe.

Microsoft Will Publish Rise of the Tomb Raider

Crystal Dynamics is still making the game, but Microsoft's getting deeply involved.

There's been some confusion over Rise of the Tomb Raider's exclusivity status, but Microsoft revealed today it's actually publishing the damn game.

News first broke when Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg responded to a fan on Twitter who was asking about how the game's publishing was being handled.

Square Enix later released a more clarifying statement to several outlets:

"Yes, Microsoft will be publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox. Microsoft has always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the Tomb Raider franchise as one of the biggest in gaming."

This certainly seems to suggest we'll only be seeing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One (and possibly PC), even though previous reports left wiggle room for the sequel to show up down the line.

Of course, all of that could still happen. But in a world where Microsoft is publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider and Sony's locked up Street Fighter V, this generation of hardware might only be getting weirder.

that's why mass effect 1 eventually made it to ps3 ~4 years after its initial release despite being originally published by MS. that seems like a fringe case to me. it did happen though

bioshock was never published by microsoft. it's always been 2k. there may have been an exclusivity contract involved but iirc every developer was having issues with ps3 tech at the time, which may have dissuaded/delayed the ps3 port

It appears as if Best Buy is selling the Tomb Raider 1 TB bundle for Black Friday. $50 off the system and a free controller if I read the ad correctly; $350 altogether. I'm not the biggest Microsoft fan but don't if I'm not very tempted into purchasing this bundle. Get to have both of the recent Tomb Raider releases and a I TB system for below $400.


And from the limited gameplay I saw from twitch last night, looks like the game isn't as linear as the first one was.

Damnit, I think I'm going to pull the trigger. There aren't any overheating issues with the Xbox One system, correct? Looking for any reason to talk myself out of copping this system because I want to hold out for when Red Dead drops so I can cop the PS4 then.

Looks great, plays great.

I really like how it rewards exploring. There's almost always SOMEthing of worth when you go off the straight path (materials, artifacts, a tomb). It has the right balance for me of kinda funneling you forward to keep the story moving, but you can sidetrack a bit with other stuff.

Honestly has even better gameplay mechanics than the first, and I loved the first!

The crafting system is nice as well, the build paths are even better than before. I'm a stealth style player so I'm focusing more on that by using the Bow as my main weapon. Glad it allows me to go towards what fits my play style better.

Looks like they supported a sequel to the reboot when no one else would and that lead to it being a timed exclusive. Sucks for some but I can also see why they did it if it's true that Sony didn't want to help publish it.

I bought it back when it came out but never played it since I'd just finished it for free on PS3 as a PS+ game. I enjoyed it so much I figured I'd throw Square some bones and guarantee myself a way to play the game again if I ever got the itch, and I think that itch is well on its way right now.

I'm glad I did, because they added improved animations on the PS4 port. It's a game I'd probably play through again myself if I didn't have hella games on my backlog.

and Metroid elements of going back to old hubs with new skills. It was just such a well-designed GAME, and all these reviews I've read make it sound like they've mastered that part while greatly improving the narrative end.

similar to the Tomb Raider game on PS3/Xbox 360? I notice on twitch that there's few people streaming the game and it's only been out for two weeks or so now. I know Fallout 4 is big, but even Mad Max had it's share of people streaming the game during the first month or so of its release.

I'm a person that hates overwhelming collectibles in a game, this game I don't mind it as its not too many and they are necessary for your upgrades.

Way more tombs to explore than in the first game as well. They took whatever issues the first had and improved them. IF you stick to only the main stuff then yeah you'll get through it somewhat fast, there are optional missions in this one though.

If you enjoyed the first, you'll like this one a lot more.

But I think I'm going to wait until this drops on PS4. I don't think this game will be worth of me buying an Xbox One since I don't see myself getting another game for Xbox One once I beat this Tomb Raider game. I could see myself maybe getting a PS4 for the new Uncharted next year, but I'm certain I'll cop one once the new Red Dead drops, when ever that is.

My memories of selling Tomb Raider a week or two after I bought it since it took me a very short time to beat the game makes me hesitant to cop an Xbox One bundle this coming Black Friday. It was a great game and all, but it was too short an experience.
