Just got on to the XB1 Beta tonight -- right away, it's a big Borderlands knock-off, except with a much more amazing graphic engine and grittier art style. Also, it's taking advantage of all the upgrades of a better network system.
My buddy and I just jumped into an early game, were running through our first game together, both level 2s, approaching level 3. A level 5 character just comes drifting through our area, and he starts drawing out a bunch of level 5 enemies that we have to carefully fight to advance. Right after the 5 passes through, a 7 blows by, so we get more high level enemies to mow down together. We can barely advance we're so under siege just with random enemies coming through. And you can interact and/or party up with any player coming through. I performed a wave, a point, and whatever else to a random public member when he came through my area, then I pulled up the invite menu and got him into my game with the press of just a few buttons during one round. It's extremely impressive how smooth the multiplayer is. In the end, I got one character up to level 6, and there were rich and rewarding unlocks at every level, enjoyably changing the way I play with each one.
And that was just one evening, I think just one map with the objectives re-arranged. It's extremely impressive.
I did run into (and started troubleshooting) some weird problems where I started a party and invited my friend to game, then the only way I could hear him (he could hear me the whole time) was if I kept the party open in a Snap sidebar. Dumb, probably an Xbox Live issue, probably fixable with some different ways to match-make, but annoying all the same. Also some of the experience scaling seemed incomplete (didn't matter which we were killing, all XP the same), but presumably it's just the beta.
Overall -- looks STUNNING, plays great, extremely forward-thinking network play options. If you're a fan of Borderlands, this is already a must-own, but overall this is really the cutting edge of next-gen gameplay, I dunno why we're acting like it's just another day playing games. ___________
