Never let it be said that Nintendo isn't willing to experiment. Take the just-announced Nintendo 2DS — a cheaper version of its 3DS handheld console that does away with the 3D features and, more notable, the familiar clamshell form factor in an effort to hit a lower $129.99 price point. That's a good $50 cheaper than the 3DS, but the wedge-shaped, tablet-esque form factor is a huge compromise over the original 3DS. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime called the 2DS "an entry-level handheld gaming system" in a conversation with Kotaku, noting that it'll give families a more affordable option come the holiday season.

On the plus side, it does play any 3DS or DS game, just without the 3D effects, and it includes wi-fi, multiplayer games, and the Nintendo eShop. Overall, the only major change compared to the current 3DS console is the redesigned form factor and the lack of 3D. It'll come complete with the same stylus that the 3DS uses, a 4GB memory card, and even the cameras will still shoot in 3D (despite the fact the 2DS's screen won't support it). According to Kotaku, the console will be available on October 12th in red and blue versions, although Nintendo's own PR didn't give a firm launch date.

It’s essentially a digital version of the book that you’ll be able to access through the GamePad, that you’ll download onto the system. It’ll be resident on the system. It’s really cool.”

Granted, I've been playing Pokemon Black2/White2 for months, and haven't been able to use 3D. But, Luigi's Mansion, SM 3D Land, Castlevania, etc. look stupid as fuck in 2D.

I keep checking to see if this is an Onion article. It feels like I'm being made fun of.

and wow is that thing ugly. and impractical. gonna be lots of scratched up/cracked screens...

as part of the gameplay. I know Pullblox/Pushmo does something cool with it, but out of the 3DS games I've played, only Super Mario 3D Land took advantage of the depth perception stuff. It's kind of like how the first wave of DS games tried to be innovative with using the stylus, but after a while developers seemed to not care anymore.

A device that plays 3DS games that is cheaper than a 3DS and has a better battery life is commendable. The 3DS was conceived during the height of the 3D fascination when Hollywood and TV manufactures were forcing 3D down everyone's throats. It makes sense that in 2013 the gimmick gets removed for some meaningful improvements.

The problem here is that the 2DS looks like a piece of shit and has a battery that doesn't outlast the XL (I'm guessing it's the 3DS battery with time estimates accounting for a lack of 3D). The price might be somewhat tempting for some parents though.

Guess we'll see how it does.

$50 price drop on the Wii-U doesn't seem like enough in the face of the PS4. $100 more still gets you much newer tech.

That being said, showed it to my daughter,she lost her shit and wants one. Explained the lack of 3-D, now wants it even more, she hates the 3d on her brother's 3DS. Easy as that, it's for the kids, not for us jaded old men.

If the Wii U continues to fail...they will release the next system and be fine...

The fact that the handheld market is so profitable will keep them in the black...

People forget the Virtual Boy - Nintendo Gamecube run...there were loads of fail...but they had Game Boy to keep them going and a few successes in their games...as long as they keep making great proprietary software, Nintendo won't be going anywhere...

As long as they have Mario, Zelda, DK, Metroid, Pokemon, and Kirby...they will be making systems waiting for the next opponent...

While I believe they'll be around for the next next generation of consoles, this Wii U business is going to really hurt if they don't have the games. So many companies have now gone on the record about not putting games on the Wii U (or are wary of doing so), and I don't think the tide has stopped either. Even though N64 and GC lost those generations, they still had huge third party support with games like Goldeneye and Resident Evil 4.

It's still too early to tell though, and (yet again) their first party titles may be enough to sell systems until third party publishers jump back on board. What will really dictate their fate will be 2014, when X1/PS4 are in full swing and they'll no longer have the "advantage" of first mover.

Mario Kart 8 isn't until Spring 2014. Super Smash Bros. isn't until 2014 which probably means Holiday 2014. There is no 3D Mario or Zelda announced. They are banking on these remakes to push them over. I played Wind Waker HD and the game is beautiful. If people never played this on GameCube, it could push the system with that bundle.

This is a massive issue. The lack of system sellers along with the severe branding issue meant that Nintendo's early mover advantage was negated by themselves. In comparison, the 360 leveraged every bit of their one-year advantage to basically lockdown the NA market through the life of the generation. The PS3 eventually caught up through global sales, but the 360's early advantage was significant.

We're not seeing that with the Wii U now, when it needs it the most (with the next two, very-hyped competitors coming out next season).

Great, and I'm positive these games will push units. But is it enough? One big reason for the Wii's precipitous decline (after gangbuster sales) was the shitty attach rate. No one bought games for it after buying the system because good games weren't being released for it (in large part due to the hardware and lack of real online support). And what third party games *were* released for it sold poorly.

One key difference between the Wii and Wii U though? Publishers were fully on board with the Wii... but with the Wii U they can't jump ship fast enough.

It's still way too early to really tell, but my early prediction is that the Wii U will end up a very distant third (by an even bigger margin than the GC) and Nintendo will end up doing a lot of soul searching regarding the home console race.

With Xbox One and PS4 damn near being the same system at this point, Wii U could utilize that to gain marketshare...but once again...they needed the games 6 months ago...the Wii U could be the complement...alot of my casual friends typically had a Wii and PS3/360 combination...

It will be interesting to see how brutal the Wii U can get saleswise....that price drop isn't enough...I think they will be forced to do another price drop once the PS4 and One are released and the first few months pass by...Nintendo seriously dropped the ball this holiday season without having a NEW game that can hold them down...

Nintendo has never had a 3rd party or sales problem in the handheld market
every nintendo handheld console has run rings around every home console
and they come with a load of 3rd party original games

its really not shocking that they'd sell more of these than 3ds'

I've heard it's good for kids, in terms of not destroying developing eye sight with the 3DS. I don't know if it can play those games that are designated for the "new" 3DS.

and talked to a guy at the game store yesterday and it can play everything but he simply said that the 3DS' screen was better. The selling point for me was when he told me I could get them stuff like Super Mario Kart but only buy one game because they can play against each other. I found a deal that's equal to the 80 dollar one here and am looking at where to get used DS and 3DS games right now.

If anyone has any game suggestions for 7-9 year olds feel free to let me know.
