"XBOX ONE DRM Guidelines reversed (Kot link)"

Giant Bomb actually broke it but I can't get there from work.

Microsoft Is Removing Xbox One DRM
This could be the biggest backtrack in gaming history: Microsoft will reverse course on their DRM policies for Xbox One, dropping their 24-hour Internet check-in requirement and all restrictions on used games.

Here's Microsoft:

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console — there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.
Original story follows:

Citing multiple sources, GiantBomb says Microsoft has decided to remove a laundry list of Xbox One restrictions that customers considered negative:

No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
Authentication is no longer necessary
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped

This comes after heavy criticism following an E3 in which Sony bragged about their own policies for the PS4, which Sony says will not restrict used games or require an Internet connection.

The Xbox One Just Had A Very Bad Day
In two weeks' time, we may look on this as one of the smartest PR moves of all time. But for now? It's been a bad day for Microsoft. Read…
Since they revealed the Xbox One in May, Microsoft has faced non-stop criticism for announced policies that could drastically change the way we play games in the future. The Xbox One, they said, would require players to connect to the Internet once every 24 hours in order to keep the box playing games. You would have to activate each game by registering it on the web before playing. The console would also restrict the way that game discs are traded, borrowed, and shared, limiting the number of people who could own and play each game, and restricting trade-ins on a publisher-by-publisher basis.

Microsoft has justified these policies by saying that these moves are consistent with a shift to digital seen on Steam, iTunes and other digital platforms.

By reversing on those policies, Microsoft calls a lot of things into question: what will become of the Xbox One's family sharing plan? Will publishers find other ways to block used games? And what of all the rhetoric of how "the bits"—the data on each game disc, rather than the discs themselves—are the future?

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment but have not heard back yet.

It feels like every time there is a consumer vs corporation issue on these boards there's a core segment willing to swallow corporate shenanigans, on some 'It's not a big deal, TO ME'.

I don't buy used games.

It's not like I'm in 6th grade and trading games is such a big deal. MS is also only planning on only having an HDMI connection on these next generation consoles. If I don't complain about that am I still sucking up their corporate jargon if it doesn't effect me?

If I don't
>complain about that am I still sucking up their corporate
>jargon if it doesn't effect me?

It doesn't affect me either.

In the past ten years ive bought TWO used games, Dead Rising and DOA 4...YEARS after they came out..played then 20 minutes tops. It was when I got one of my replacement Xbox's back from Microsoft, realized i loaned my collection out in the meantime, and was itching to just play anything.

I own 30 plus retail games* An additional 10 retail games I paid for and downloaded**. In the past ten years ive been fully offline in the different places ive lived...hrm...MAYBE five, six times total (hurricane Sandy withstanding)

But I like options. I remember when I was young Reggie and traded in my SNES and games (dummy move in hindsight) to buy my first PS1. When im fucking forced to go to gamestop because I want a game NOW as opposed to waiting for Amazon I see those kids shuffling those games in to trade in to buy a Madden or a Mass Effect. Just because it doesn't affect ME, doesn't mean it's good for gaming and will eventually lead to a decision that will affect me. I remember there was a time where Microsoft talked about DLC as if it meant nothing, just an extra revenue stream for developers and it 'wouldn't affect me' because they told me it would only be used to order a funny colored guns in FPS's and shit. Now we've got major plot points (Mass Effect 3) kept away as pre-order bonuses or DLC where if I don't order in the right place, or fork over the dough, I don't get the full experience.

And ultimately Microsoft never pointed out any real positives:

1)Having my 'collection' easily accessible from any xbox would be great if I can stream it...but having to wait for a 5 gig download for each game I chose to play isn't worth it.

2)When they say it's going to be cheaper when they are the primary retailer I don't believe them. Xbox live 'sales' don't compare to the competition meaning PSN. We won't even touch steam.

Only positive thing was the ability to share with your 'friends', but they did a horrible job explaining it. "Do we have to have a family plan together?". But they had no problem explaining that if I loan my friend a game, and he sticks it in his Xbox, he would have to pay the full fee to play it, LOL.

*probably 50 games, half unplayed, that backlog fucking scares me. A job good enough to buy whatever game I want is a 12 year old Reggie's dream, time never to play them is a 12 year old Reggie's nightmare.

**You know it took me overnight to download the PSN plus free game Vanquish, lol. That's why I laugh at RJCC's 'WHAT IF I WANNA PLAY IN A HOTEL' argument. Nigga, carrying a half ounce DVD is easier then waiting five hours.

happens to be the same game im at the beginning of (so its a small download) and is ALSO something broken down code wise so that way it loads the engine first and levels second.

Because that's how games are nomally coded

Also because microsoft says so, despite giving developers full control(supposedly, they never were straight with this)

Even tho I think it's still a pipe dream, streaming better(cause at least MIGHT work, ill hold my reservations tho) , because you truly CAN play the game independent of actual downloads...it just streams what your up on.

But dig outta dat hole!

Shows companies actually do listen to consumer feedback... This is a good thing.

And although I was skeptical to begin with, I think this implicitly confirms that MS had no plans to create an online marketplace similar to Steam... The retailers would have dictated the prices and always on DRM would NOT have been worth it.

than you trying to claim that vacuum and car patents have the same impact as software patents... using ad campaigns from those same vacuum and car companies as evidence (lol) of such.

What's funny is that even the president shat on your position just a week ago.

Besides all that though, I already detailed my reasons in other posts. The only way always on (or 24hr) DRM could be justified is if Microsoft wanted to introduce a highly competitively priced digital distribution market like Steam.

People HATED Steam when it first came out, but when they recognized the service it provided everyone jumped on board. Same shit here... if Microsoft envisioned providing a quality platform that gave gamers more GAMES, then the always on DRM would be ***justified***. Gamers wouldn't give a shit about it if it meant they could get games they wanted for cheap.

The X1 would have sold like crazy at launch regardless if they had the DRM or not. The game exclusives are worthwhile, their core franchises have massive fanbases and the Xbox brand is arguably stronger than the Playstation brand in the home territory. If they debuted a console game marketplace even somewhat similar to Steam they would have CLEANED UP. Sacrificing some sales in the short run to establish a viable long-term vision is well worth the PR hit.

So yes, it's good they listened to consumer feedback... it's what good companies do. And they could still provide a Steam-like service... but since this era of consoles is still heavily disc-based then not having some DRM service to police digital distribution becomes extremely difficult.

it's remarkable how little you know about patents despite writing so many posts about them.

you should actually sit down and have a conversation with someone who's worked in the industry some time. like your friend Nilay.

yet pretty much everything I stated early on in that post basically came to pass.

And I love how you keep adopting this hoitey toitey attitude about how much you know patents, yet you can't type a single relevant sentence backing up your position. But, like I said, the fucking president himself said that software patents need to be handled separately. So what's your position again, that supposedly is right yet you can't articulate?

But who gives a shit about patents... you called me out on my position on the Xbox One's DRM strategy and I backed it up. So either explain why I'm wrong or shut the fuck up.

A whole Lotta "YOURE GODDAMN WRONG" without a single reason behind it.

You were talking VACUUMS, dude.

But let's keep this on topic shall we?

You called me out when I stated that Microsoft had no plans to provide a Steam like service. Or, as clarified in the Ars article, Microsoft had no plans to provide ANY benefit to the consumer to justify the DRM. Just the next in the long line of failed DRM schemes built solely to police the consumer. Just like I stated above.

You want to try and stay on topic now?

The only issue I had with Microsoft's approach was their messaging. But since they fucked that up they had no choice but to back track.

Now we're back to next gen = last gen + better graphics.

No digital game sharing and you have to have the disk in the tray to play games. No wonder the industry is stagnant.

If they had a plan justifying the DRM (ie, lots of legal games bought for cheap) then the fanboys going crazy shouldn't have bothered them. Instead, giving up this quickly means their DRM is what DRM typically is.. A worthless (and expensive) way to stop piracy.

Edit: and here's some examples...

http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/19/4446032/square-enix-gamers-bundle-offers-five-games-for-under-20

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/06/xbox-one-eighty-microsoft-fails-to-sell-the-future-retreats-to-the-past/

"Maybe Microsoft could have created a Netflix style "all-you-can-play" deal that gave players access to a large portion of the system's library for a set monthly price. Maybe a more limited, digital GameFly could allow for a rotating, user-selected game downloads that changed every month. Maybe they could have allowed players to loan any of their digital games to anyone around the world for a limited, 12-hour test run as a way to spread the word about an excellent title. Maybe they could have announced a set pricing structure that encouraged downloadable games to drop down to a percentage of their original price months or years after their release."

These systems are under such a microscope I wouldn't be surprised if they dont change a million more things. But this is the one thing I was anticipating and am glad I will stick to XB, Im very comfortable with their setup. This is a direct result of listening to the public. Smart move by MS never the less. Ill probably end up with both eventually, depending on what OG games PS will drop that will interest me.

So much of their vision was based on always on. Like, switching between games and TV on the fly. I'm wondering how does that still work when they have to abandon the core of what the box was going to do. Those launch titles that took advantage of those features, are just done now?

I think this announcement was to stop the bleeding, but they still have a lot of work to do before the launch in Nov/Dec.

In response to Reply # 0

So now that they ditched the online requirement, I dont see how developers will be able to maximize the Cloud usage. MS had stated that with their cloud servers, it would enable developers to "infinitely increase the size, scope and scale of gameplay elements." This would cripple the PS4's already better GDDR5 RAM. But now I suppose devs now have to put all the game data onto the disc/download instead of having the option to stream content from the Cloud?

This could be a huge blow to MS' strategy and hurt the GPU power of the console. Maybe some games like Titanfall, which are multiplayer only, can still use it?

Respawn (Titanfall) summed it up as dedicated fucking servers(basically complaining that for other platforms they would have to foot that bill), like dedicated fucking servers don't exist now.

Fucking Socom had the 'power of the cloud'.

Respawn - "Digging deeper, Emslie says Respawn can calculate all of Titanfall's AI and physics on the cloud. "It's not peer-to-peer any more," he says. "We just wiped that away. In the past, when you were playing multiplayer games, you had to make sure the party leader had an open NAT. It was just this big hassle. We don't have to worry about any of that any more. It's fantastic. When I say the cloud I'm talking about dedicated servers as well and how they interact with each other. We're really happy with it.""

It's just DEDICATED servers. Don't get me wrong, it IS huge. Just not worth the buzzword speak

1)Companies don't have the excuse of arbitrarily pulling the plug on an online community, a la EA, to force them to upgrade a product

2)Dedicated servers offloads the stress of each console having to worry about possibly having responsibilities of doing double duties as the server, freeing up memory and processor cycles.

Both of which are huge...ultimately we get smoother online that will presumably last this whole cycle. But it's not 'THE POWER OF THE CLOUD', and fucking disengenous to push that angle as if that and DRM are one and the same (Ie, their claim that for every game it always needs to be online as opposed to focused multiplayer titles.). If you like multiplayer games it should be much easier to find a server, that server should be much smoother, and the graphical dropoff some titles have to suffer(because it has to serve as the server) when it comes to the online vs singleplayer portion should be non-existent.

But it's not a magical fucking cloud, and while Microsoft touts it as being able to calculate graphics and shit, that info flying into your console at like 100MS aint going to make a fucking difference (and won't be used in 99.9% of titles).

Just dedicated servers

Your ssl based vpn is the freaking cloud

Graphical acceleration on remote servers itself already been around awhile

Citrix been doin this shit for a minute now

Hell I run hyper-v and remote fx at home so I can game over a rdp session

There are YouTube videos showing crysis running in an rdp session

This is all because of hyper-v and remote fx, Azure brings it to the masses on a cheaper grander scale

Lets not front that taking enterprise virtualization tech and integrating it mainstream gaming ain't some real forward thinking shit

There's a shit ton of possibilities because the Azure platform is so scalable (think VMware or hyper-v in a global operation just doubled or tripled in size)

Arguably its Song's line with their promise of having their entire classic library available for remote sessions. You've got services like Onlive, etc.

Dedicated servers in a traditional MMO will maintain assets and multiplayer netcode and all that shit.

What titanfall was going to do was actually stream assets and actual hard engine features directly through some dedicated servers designed to augment your console's capabilities. The more interesting of it is that it runs off of the source engine and I've never seen something like that with the source engine.

Yeah. Gaikai and Onlive (and to an extent, Phantom) had that same capability but there hasn't really been a console game that would be able to put that in their product.

And Respawn is right, they didn't want to foot the bill for this. They aren't Valve. Hell. Valve couldn't go into something like that, right now at least.

Titanfall gets their game out.
Microsoft shows off it's Cloud Computing tech (they really need to catch up anyway)

Gamers win.

The "power of the cloud" can only be used for non latency-dependent calculations, such as background effects like fog over a lake. Note that Sony has also stated that they can also leverage the "power of the cloud", using Microsoft's definition.

For anything like texture resolution or AI or immediate functions like that, the internal CPU is used. And it's confirmed that PS4's CPU/GPU combo is more powerful than X1's.

Nope, Titanfall and Forza 5 are using it for AI.

Yes, but if you believe what MS showcased about cloud servers powering graphics, it's no longer a memory in the box issue and it nullifies all of this.

they are taking about devs designing the games so that textures, AI and a lot of components of the graphics you see are loaded via the cloud. essentially, you need to be connected to the internet otherwise the game is broken as you arent going to see the elements they offloaded. that was fine when you needed an internet connection for the box to work... but now you dont.

Oh hey look, Microsoft had a chance to build the marketplace but decided not to. They chose to provide zero benefit to the consumer to justify the DRM then they desperately pulled it when the small rabid fan base got frothy. You CAN conduct business while still looking out for the consumer's welfare.

And Microsoft doesn't give a shit about the consumer.

Gamestop found that broke gamer market and came off like fucking fat rats, man.

I accept all your old games, even games you just bought, like Black Ops 2, give you 25 bucks, then sell that shit back to another sucka for like 5-10 dollars less than the original price?

Man. It's such a legal scam. As a new games spot, that's cool and all. I sometimes find some cool stuff with no box for like 5 bucks (God of War 3) and I'm good.

But I never can trade in games. Even the small local spots are heavy into the used games market. That shit has a huge profit margin.

i'm out.

GameStop teeters on the verge of bankruptcy, closing hundreds of stores each year. And I'm to believe they made a huge impact on dictating MS' big decision?

they might go bankrupt with the tablet and phone trades though...they give way too much for some brands...

they gave me 350 for an iPad 2....on eBay, my version sold for no higher than $300...lol

*Serves you grilled Crow*

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-spec-analysis-xbox-one

In terms of the GPU hardware, hard information was difficult to come by, but one of the engineers did let slip with a significant stat - 768 operations per clock. We know that both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are based on Radeon GCN architecture and we also know that each compute unit is capable of 64 operations per clock. So, again through a process of extrapolation from the drip-feed of hard facts, the make-up of the One's GPU is confirmed - 12 compute units each capable of 64 ops/clock gives us the 768 total revealed by Microsoft and thus, by extension, the 1.2 teraflop graphics core. So that's another tick on the Durango leaked spec that has been transposed across to the final Xbox One architecture and the proof we need that PlayStation 4's 18 CU graphics core has 50 per cent more raw power than the GPU in the new Microsoft console. Now, bearing in mind that we fully expect PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to launch at similar price-points, how did this disparity come about?

that won't be a problem with the PS4
peep how awesome all the naughty dog games have been(studio exclusive to PS3), imagine if every studio could effectively get the most out of the console the way they have from the gate
