and some IGN thing about Elizabeth recently; I've played the intro to Bioshock and I own Bioshock 2 thanks to PS+ giving it away...

my question is, I've always head the combat is NOT what you come to these games for, and so I've always hovered over the "Buy It" button on the PSN and then decided it wasn't worth it. But with them giving away Bioshock if I pre-order Infinite, and the art design of the world looking so incredible...could I get over the way the camera moves and other FPS things for this series?

I wish. But I can't tell.

http://www.greenmangaming.com/bundles/

The original Bioshock and XCOM are included, plus your choice of Spec Ops, Civ 5, Bioshock 2, Mafia 2 or Darkness 2. On top of all that, you also get $15 GMG credit.

Green Man Gaming is basically UK's digital distribution service, and is trustworthy. I preordered Borderlands 2 from them with no issues with price or distribution on Steam.

From what I've seen, most GMG games actually *require* Steam to use the game.

If you want more info, GMG has an official rep on reddit here (username: radaeron):

http://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/1ankg6/all_prepurchases_for_bioshock_infinite_will_now/

And here's a short FAQ on the offer:

http://blog.playfire.com/2013/03/bioshock-infinite-xcom-you.html

Edit:

Heads up, Amazon's running a similar deal, except instead of Bio 1, another game and $15 credit, it's $30 credit for a 2k game and Infinite's season pass (XCOM is included with both deals):

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/91620/amazon-bioshock-infinite-preorder-pc-digital-download-xcom-enemy-unknown-30-2k-games-credit

Tax return won't be in until next week or the week after, and payday the week after. I really want to try XCOM, I'm recently addicted to Civ IV but would love to try Civ V and I was already debating the PSN pre-ordr that was JUST Bioshock for free (since I have Bioshock 2 for free via PS+, but never played it in antcipation of deals like this...)

Nevermind, I've got to assume this is only for PC; I run an iMac from '08 and a PS3. Natch. Jealousy averted!

Takes a little while to get going but the world they built here is INCREDIBLE. Conservative bloggers are going to shit themselves over this one. Ken Levine is SHITTING on the Tea Party here.

and I don't even have Elizabeth yet. I got over $1,000, 4 pieces of gear, three or four vigors (I think 3)...

but like the game hasn't even started. I feel like some asshole private detective (that's what Booker is, right?) that randomly ended up in this utopia and is tearing it apart, lol. It reminds me of Spec Ops: The Line right now except that I actually like this game.

He shits on blind patriotism (jingoism), racism (labeling Lincoln as the "Great Apostate" like conservatives did back in the day), Nazism (it's there), capitalism (the Fink part sealed it), the post civil war/pre WW military complex and even included Daisy Fitzroy as a representation of the resistance corrupted by power.

So much is being shit on.

Yall peep the Jewish tailor machines with HEEB written over them?

I love this whole thing.

Doing this all wrong I'm sure, I played about four hours of Bioshock waiting for midnight only to remember I had to wait for PACIFIC, but then I really wanted to see what this game is about and I can't put it down. So I've got a save that's barely into Bioshock because I spent all those hours just hacking machines, and one in Bioshock 2 just after the first enemy room, and I'm gonna beat Infinite before any of them.

This game is pretty badass (and GORGEOUS) though.

One thing I miss from my limited time with both of those games, though, was the way you could keep pouches of health and salt (or whatever it was...plasmids?) in your thing and re-up on the fly; it's a lil' more stressful having to drop everything and run around looking for food and salt.

I will admit I turned the game to Easy for the final battle, though. I was drunk and high and really getting tired of just barely losing.

with a PC you can get a not-insignificant upgrade to either your CPU, GPU, Memory and other things like, what...every 6-9 months on average?

Unreal Engine is the coding rule set that I'd say about half the games you play rely on, and this is what it looked like in 1997: http://dragon.mixrmedia.com/wp-uploads/wirebot/blog/2010/05/ijhbm.jpg

The year before that picture was released (and two years before the game dropped), the Nintendo 64 came out. That means that the hardware inside the N64, no matter how much developers could learn how to pull out of that system, at the end of the day it was NEVER going to look better than that first Unreal game. And over that same lifespan, from 1996 to 2001 or whatever it was, PCs probably go through three or four iterations graphics cards and processors.

This generation the differences aren't AS striking because the PS2 created such market dominance for consoles that PC companies have been accused of purposefully holding back upgrade increments by the PC community so games can still look comparable on the consoles.

You could watch this comparison video if you want, but My PS3 version looks a lot like the PC version they have in this example. The main difference for me is that the draw distance is much less, the blacks just don't pop like they do here, and all of the various little details that make PC games so mesmerizing like shading, water effects and all those atmospheric texture things. On a big enough TV with HDMI, the PS3 version definitely isn't suffering for stunning scenery.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-bioshock-infinite-face-off

Digital Foundry is always great at explaining what makes a game run, and how it compares across platforms. Love the series.

you can google image search "*insert x game here* pc vs console" to get a better idea but in short:

-everything is more detailed

-the lighting is better/more realistic

-the game runs at 60 frames per second and is therefore smoother and more responsive

one thing to consider is that the ps4 and/or xbox720 will probably start out with graphics roughly equivalent to a mid-range pc you could build today for about $650-700

i'm enjoying this game a lot more, aka it feels like a bioshock game

there remains an "amusement park" feeling to this game that i'm not particularly into (the way the doors automatically open for you, the "ride this actual roller coaster" mechanic in the sky rails, etc.) but it feels like the game has opened up a bit more and i'm no longer just being shoved down a corridor. for a while i was genuinely not enjoying playing this game because of its "hey look at this shocking imagery! now walk down this path!! BOMBAST!!!!" nature. it felt more like a call of duty game

the story seems ok so far, having become more interesting with the "grass isn't always greener" beat it just pulled. we'll see how it wraps up but i'm intrigued for the moment. i have some thoughts about the opening of the game but i'm reserving judgment until i actually beat it. maybe this game is a commentary on video games or something

i have major issues with elizabeth being sold as both a believable character and as a series of game mechanics designed to make your gaming experience easier. it's just dumb. there is also a bit of a disconnect when she casually explores a given area, acting like she didn't just witness booker murdering dozens of security dudes. in fact, i think there is some dissonance between the down time (exploring areas populated by non-hostile citizens of the city) and the action sequences. i know both of those things taking place in the same game but sometimes they feel unrelated to each other. maybe that's a result of how believable this world is. i think i'm having trouble reconciling the video-game-ness and the overall believability of this game space. sometimes they blend perfectly but sometimes they stand in stark contrast to each other

it goes without saying that this game looks and plays like a dream. the art design and gameplay design are uniquely stunning and the controls are just about perfect

There's actually a whole conversation about it. It's also a theme that continues throughout. Of course a lot of this slowly disappears through the story.

One of the most beautiful games I've seen in a long while. I can kinda see that Ken Levine and Irrational have this weird thing for really huge statues.

On console, the controls feel the same as before (which I've complained about the whole series): stiff. analogue. Almost last gen level controls. But it's cool because it'll never get to a point where you start losing because the controls suck or something.

9 out of 10 on my end.

SPOILERS PART

The story did a really good job of leaking out these crucial plot details throughout the story instead of unfurling some huge plot twist at the end with a bunch of exposition. By the last fourth of the game I knew exactly what was going on but my jaw still dropped when you realize how Elizabeth lost her finger.

The Comstock stuff was pretty telegraphed. If you picked up all the Voxophones (which you really should be doing if you're a Bioshock player) then you probably figured it out the second you find out that he was sterile.

I REALLY liked the new enemy types. I wanted more fighting sequences with all of them. Especially the Boys of Silence. Once you realize you can sneak past them, it makes the game a bit more interesting. I'm not sure why they didn't choose to include them until the last part of the game (And there's only one part they show them).

i'm out.

I was writing this up this morning under a THC haze and got a little too tired to finish it and I may just wait until after a third before I really want to nail these down into a more compressed thought stream, but...man, if nothing else this is a fun game to write about. I haven't felt like writing how I feel about a game in a long, long time.

(Please note that I write for/to people who have already had the experience, and while this won't be spoiler-ridden I don't try to be coy about anything, either. Being that this is a story-heavy experience, this text should be avoided if you're looking for general thoughts.)

Disclaimers on disclaimers on disclaimers: This is the only Bioshock I've played to completion. I now own the entire series, thanks to Bioshock 2 having been offered for free to Playstation Plus members and the original Bioshock coming along with this new one, but I hadn't played much more than an hour of either. A good deal of trepidation was owed to my general distaste for the First-Person Shooter genre...hard as it might be to believe, either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Killzone 2 was my last FPS experience. Hell, I hadn't even seen the much-hyped E3 trailers until sometime this month - that's how tuned out of the gaming conversation I was before I came across Giantbomb. Essentially, a lot of the cultural connotations folks bring to this game don't exist for me.

Bioshock Infinite was sold to me mostly on its own merits. I loved the look of the art, I loved the ambition of the in-game culture and after seeing the ambition of those trailers (more on those later) I was certain at the very least I would be more in awe of Ken Levine's new world than anything I'd experienced since probably Grand Theft Auto IV. And for a large part of the game, that was certainly all I needed to marathon through the game in a pair of sessions that totaled between 10 and 16 hours if I had to guess. From a purely artistic perspective, the world of Columbia is a fascinating place. If you watch the Quick Look on the site they'll reveal what's likely the game's most transfixing environment/oil painting - the Fraternal Order of the Raven's tribute to John Wilkes Booth's assassination of Abraham Lincoln, complete with Devil Abe Lincoln - but my first playthrough was consistently filled with sensory curiosity.

From a gameplay perspective, my signature moment came at the climax of the first Songbird interactive cutscene, when you leap out of the airship onto a sky-line as the Princess' Tower crumbles and that intense, drum-filled soundtrack kicks in. For a moment, you may as well be Tom Cruise suspended from wires in front a green screen, there's that same sort of sensory rush that just doesn't get old. The sky-lines in general provide an intriguing element to combat, particularly a pair of fights before boarding Lady Comstock's airship that consist of several tiers and tears. Zooming up and down four or five stories of floating architecture while Elizabeth is warping in turrets, salts and weapons is just ludicrous enough that I'd become grateful Irrational Games had created a world in which all of this seemed fair game.

How they do that is apparently quite a Bioshock thing, so I'm not sure how it'd go over for people who've already rode the ride. But those first 12 or whatever hours I was totally down for loot-addiction; give me any excuse Ken Levine could find for me to stumble upon some more weird art, a new Voxophone (major props to the sound guys on these, by the way), Infusion or gear, I was in. I think that if you were to just play through this game as a cinematic experience interrupted by the occasional combat sequence, this game could possibly take half the time it does. Even with so much scrounging, I'd missed about 20 voxophones and never known telescopes were part of the same trophy as the kinetoscopes. If you're a looter, this game's got the looting.

I'm not sure I was ever quite able to reconcile my lack of training in the FPS genre as its evolved through this generation, sadly. During my second playthrough it would become less of a problem, but the first time around I played so much of the game constantly worried that Vigors were a scarce commodity that I never realized the benefits of traps, or Vigor combos, or even just switching Vigors in and out of the rotation on the fly. As the game became more and more difficult this became very frustrating for someone like me who's used to playing games exactly that inventively in series like inFamous and the Arkham games; I would just see the gun and think the gun.

As the game rounded into it's final third and became essentially all about warfare, I constantly found myself being snuck up on, and the game's lone pair of boss battles are possibly two of the worst tropes in all of boss-dom which were done no favors by my relative futility. The first is against a ghostly foe that flies around the arena (there is a moment in this game where most of the combat begins to take place in what feel like Create-A-Rooms for modern shooters; how you respond to that might say a lot about what you're looking for in video games) summoning minions that are merely distractions as you try to focus fire on an over-buffed nuisance. In and of itself this one fight isn't so bad, it's more the fact it's one of those introductory battles where you realize the next hour of gameplay is going to be dedicated to taking this thing down. The second is a defense mission disguised as an epic showdown, an idea resting on the oft-proven wrong idea that there's any excitement or fun to be gleaned from a defenseless object with a health bar being berated by tunnel-vision A.I.

I'm not going to talk much about the story because that's it's own discussion separate from the game, but I will say that it's possible to spend all of the first playthrough confused about what's going on. The Voxophones tell considerable chunks of the story, and while you could go back to relisten or read helpful transcripts, the game's momentum (even with all the riff raff dumpster diving I got up to) doesn't really foster that mentality. Likewise, the menu offers helpful information about how much you've upgraded your weaponry, what Gear you've collected (this is also, as some friends never came to learn, where you equip them) and some other things but due to the game's constantly intriguing happenings out in the game world I may have pressed the select button less than six times during my time with the game.

How a lot of this game floats through your head turns out to quite possibly be very intentional, though. In a sense the way Bioshock Infinite wraps up allows for a lot of little quibbles to be written off - I'd liken it to MF DOOM's supervillain gimmick, in which it's hard to criticize a man who actively considers himself an antagonist. I don't get any sense that Ken Levine sees himself that way but he's certainly created a game that can and will treat its player that way. There is something very interesting to me about an artist that wraps up their creation with an admission that it was just some silly fun in the end. It's definitely "in" right now to make a game that feels like a commentary on its own lineage, but this is about as bonkers a way to do it.

It's the second time around, when Bioshock Infinite becomes nothing but a game forever more, when the dream falls apart in some unfortunate ways. As it turns out, it's not as easy to get excited about rifling through trashcans for bananas, caramel boxes for machine gun ammo and barrels for cash the second time around. The process isn't exactly avoidable, either: without a New Game Plus option, the cost of weapon and vigor upgrades remains frustratingly restrictive. By tying these upgrades to such a scarce resource that's also used to restock ammo, salts and health in a pinch is just a little too sloppy for a game that initially feels so fully realized. Unless I'm just terrible at shooting games, it's disappointing that this game's difficulty ladder seems unfairly daunting for someone who'd rather play this game at the pace that the mainline story implies.

The illusion of Columbia also becomes much less impressive the second time you buckle in. There's a very carnivalesque quality to the process, a feeling first person games have always been good for in my experience but it's amplified here by just how enjoyable the first few hours are. Without any threat of combat, you're free to roam around as a stranger and soak in how intensely creative the Irrational Games people are. But when you realize that whole sequence is essentially an animatronic tour of a city that essentially doesn't exist, it becomes more like an excuse for some early cash/XP-hoarding and podcast listening, by voxophone or otherwise. It's still a great triumph, but considering a lot of the game becomes warzones and forts by the middle point that whole "original" Columbia experience feels like a bit of a novelty.

Too distracted with moving and real life drama to put them all together. Almost everything is explained and there are no loose ends. Tight narrative and fun gameplay.

the ending is jaw dropping... the more I read and the more I think about it, there are so many more parallels to the bioshock franchise as a whole that were lost on meat first.

also, dont forget to stick around after the credits for a post-credit scene.

I'm at the airship ride to Comstock house where you fight off the Mosquitos and other airships with RPG heavies. Dying while on board is pretty much game over because you get reviived so disoriented to where the enemy is and get just fucking waylayed by gunfire as sun as your crack your eyelids.

Almost finished though.

Lady Comstock was fucking UNBEARABLE to fight.

So you either get killed super fast or run out of ammo. Then if you die she gets all of her health back and you have no ammo so you're fucked if you don't beat her in one go. She's impossible to beat if you die. IM.POSSIBLE.

The trick is to stack your gear with all melee buffers and have the explosive Charge upgrade. Use charge and melee and really just get lucky.

In response to Reply # 72

is absolutely invaluable for 1999 mode.

The best 2 vigors to make sure you don't get super fucked up is Charge and Murder of Crows.

Once you upgrade both they really help out. Murder of Crows keeps enemies from shooting you to shit and then with the upgrade they make vigor traps when they die under the vigor's effects.

Charge is perfect for gettingout of line of fire, disposing of a common enemy or more with explosion affect (not a heavy) and recharging your shield with the upgrade.

Charge is the BEST way to get rid of the Handyman too. It stunts him and gives you chance to peg at his heart while he's stunned. Even more damage if you buff your melee attacks with gear.

Best way to get rid of Patriots is with Undertow water blast and Shock Jockey combo and then dumping clips into them while they are stunned.

Check it.

- She raises the dead if there's bodies around, right? So...
- Make sure there's no bodies to resurrect.
- Combine Murder of Crows + Devil's Kiss. The crows will be on fire and spread easier throughout the group of soldiers.

You'll have an easier time concentrating on her alone.

Ya dumbasses.

and MAN, I'd played the first hour or so before (up to when you first get into the Medical Pavilion) and thought the combat was...ok, but NOPE. So much re-injecting plasmids and getting hurt. Just fighting three or four people with a turret around I can go through four or five health kits.

Since I've had a good bit of the story spoiled for me thanks to Bioshock Infinite essays, podcasts and just stumbling across things I'm thinking I might just kick it to Easy and cruise through, because this combat doesn't really cut it. Mad props to the team for shaping everything up, from the weapon swapping to aiming to musical cues.

It handles like a PS2 era FPS and follows some really really REALLY antiquated FPS tropes.

It's in that way that GTA is a great series of games but in spite of the shitty combat controls.

Killzone 2 and the original Modern Warfare were my last serious forays into first person games, so I'm not as serious about dead zones and etc. Bioshock Infinite definitely felt like a series of combat arenas at times but it's just a lot better about balancing things out.

I wasn't prepared at all for the horror nature of this game (and it's VERY scary to me, so far) and how that'd effect combat; ie. no musical cues at all. There's also that weird hacking mini-game that I spend a considerable amount of time in, and I really can't stress how smart it was to move from reserves of health and EVE to a one health, one salt ecosystem.

It's SO frustrating in battle to A) have to switch from your gun hand to your plasmid hand and then B) find out your plasmids were low so you have to spend 4 seconds re-injecting yourself with EVE. In some fights I've gone from 8+ health to 2+ health just due to reloading ammo and re-injecting EVE. Also, having the health reserves is misleading because it seems like sometimes the game pumps health packs in for you, other times you have have to press a button to do it manually or else you'll die even though you still have 3 or 4 packs on you.

I just encountered my first Big Daddy/Little Sister in the wild, and I couldn't figure out how to let this turret hack me or do any damage at all to the Big Daddy, and I got fucking PLOWED by that dude lmao. I'm almost guaranteed to flip it down to Easy later this week when I try to get back into it because this game feels as cumbersome as, yea, like Timesplitters 2 or Quake 3 were still setting the standard.

Set traps and a strategy. I was fucking up at most parts because I thought I was still playing Borderlands 2 when I could easily set a trap and use that to buy a few seconds to regroup, change weapons, reload, etc.

The first bioshock it's very evident. Infinite there's some parts where you're forced into these room full of enemies but for the most part, it's like a weird playground of "here's what you can do".

i'm out.

EVERYONE gets plowed by that first Big Daddy, haha.

I would venture to say that, since you don't have a large suite of weapons/plasmids to choose from yet, he's actually the toughest one you'll face all game.

With that said... shotgun to the face, mang. Shotgun to the fucking face.

I'm still dying all the time, I'm still hating the combat, I'm still way too terrified walking around to appreciate the combat in any way, shape or form.

maybe I'll try to come back to it on Easy after I run through this Saints Row 3 and XCOM, but I've already had all the major story beats spoiled for me ad nauseam on the Bombcast so it's really not on my priority list if it's not very fun to play.

I will say the ATMOSPHERE was incredible, but every time I enter a room with a Big Daddy I get really scared it's going to see me, and then inevitably it sees me, and then I die five or six times slowly chipping away at them. I can't get on top of it.

Again, I may be misremembering, but I could have sworn most enemies in that game were fighting you with melee weapons. I also remember just wrenching fools except for the Big Daddy's. It didn't seem like there was so much focus on firefights like there is in Infinite.

To me, that was where it fell apart. Fighting things like the Handyman were fun but the regular grunts with guns were annoying, especially when there were a lot of em.

>It handles like a PS2 era FPS and follows some really really
>REALLY antiquated FPS tropes.
>
>It's in that way that GTA is a great series of games but in
>spite of the shitty combat controls.

Unsurprisingly, GTA4 was the only one I really put any hours in and beat. The old ones did play like shit and I could never get into em because of it.

All that said, pretty much everything besides the actual gameplay was great.

Copped it on steam summer sale and holy shit what a fantastic game

Spoilers

For those that stuck around after the credits you see Booker and you hear a baby's voice in the next room presumed to be Anna. We know that Booker and Comstock are the same people just from other realities but we are lead to believe that by drowning him before he can either accept or reject the baptism it stops everything.

Think maybe this still goes on no matter what or somehow after they both died another version of the girl went back and stopped even more from happening? We've seen other tears happen like the one from 1985 I believe with "everybody rules the world" playing through the portal.

Love that the game makes me think that much after the fact

which, even more than The Last of Us (since TLoU has online play and an entire sections of the storyline we're not privy to, I can see half the DLC being on one end and half the other), I have no idea what it might entail. I totally forgot a season pass for this game even existed until these Steam sales.

SLIGHT SPOILERS....

It's MGS: Infinite
It's all stealth. Playing "one-two punch" style will get you killed, often.
And when she dies she's dead. She lost her "rift" powers at the beginning. It goes into the fall of Rapture. It has "Atlas", Suchong and Ryan. Hopefully you've beaten Bioshock because it ties up most of the loose ends and mysteries. It tells you where the Big Daddy and Songbird come from. I'm near the end if this one is as short as the first episode.

Very fun and genuinely creepy because you aren't some soldier.

Sad to see Irrational go...

A week later, I'm still thinking about the ending and the overall story, which I think was great. Not many games keep you thinking about the story days later.

I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay, but I'm not a big FPS guy and admittedly, I severely under-utilized the Vigors. Maybe I'll try playing it again with a bit more attention to Vigors.

I'm wondering if I should buy the Season Pass. The problem is I already know what happens in both Burial at Sea episodes (got so wrapped up in the Bioshock Infinite story that I read all kinds of stuff online and Burial at Sea kind of got spoiled).

Is it worth picking up for 19.99 even if I know how it ends?

Great game though. I hope we get another instalment with Levine's fingerprints on it.

I tried playing the first one, and enjoyed it some, but I realized after a little while that I don't love the gameplay as much as I love the point of the story and the world-building.

Those two first games aren't even in the same realm as Infinite in those areas. It's supposed to be that way, but it's hard to go back from the end.

I think that means I can go forward into the Burial stuff okay, though.

over the past two years both of the old games were free with a PS+ subscription and I tried both of them, but especially the first Bioshock having already heard all the big story beats and great quotes there wasn't much suspense to the story, and the gameplay was just overly frustrating to me. I REALLY did not enjoy fighting Big Daddies.

Infinite however I can probably credit for getting me back into FPS, at least as into them as I can be.
