"The Tim Cook Era"

With all the rumors swirling about a bigger iPhone and a smaller iPad for this fall season (both items that Steve Jobs was explicitly against), it seems like Tim Cook is putting a tangible stamp on his reign from the get go. While no one doubts that Jobs had a singular knack for foreseeing and setting consumer tastes, I do feel that both moves put Apple in a much better position competitively in the marketplace. And I'm genuinely curious to see what other developments will take place in the future (there are rumors that iTunes is also being rebuilt from the ground up).

Where does Apple go from here? Any predictions on what other developments Cook & Co. might have going forward? Jobs was pretty adamant about having groundbreaking projects in the pipeline before he passed; the expectation is an upgrade to Apple TV, but that's probably not the only thing, right?

Genuine discussion please... check your fanboyism at the door.

(The Royal YOU)

iPod = too small, no wireless, this sucks. I'm getting a Digital River.
iPhone = never gonna work, they can't compete with Crackberry.
iPad = A bigger iPhone that doesn't make calls (and sounds like a tampon)
MacBook Air = fail.

Apple will thrive or die with their products.

Other PC makers will mercilessly copy the successful products (while pretending it was obvious, --or that they had been planning to launch the same product even before Apple did) and mock Apple for their failures (and successes- think Karl Rove making John Kerry into a coward - or Samsung making Apple buyers into posers.)

I think they should liquidate the company and give the money to the shareholders. \\\

Not you you.

To answer your question: Who fucking knows what they'll do? There are thousands of tech bloggers, and tens of thousands of analysts at companies trying to predict it - and they are wrong about 99% of the time.

You think the haters and the goobers (only two types here) have a clue?

It's fairly well documented that he was a psychopath:
http://www.realfreemarket.org/blog/2012/02/16/steve-jobs-fbi-file/

Anyway, that's aside from the point. All I'm saying is that Apple consistently did things that it said it would never do. There's no evidence that Tim Cook has "Gone Rogue".

I hearded that Steve was a PYSCHO, but it's not personal. Its well documented on a blog.

And Apple changing there mind HAS to be part of some sort of mental disease. The only way things should work is to pick a single position and stick with it forever - no matter if reality is tracking with it.

That's why I support abstinence only education, I know AIDS is god punishment to the gays, Mardi Gras causes hurricanes, and Grover Norquist is the only person in Washington who is honorable.

Have you ever considered getting a show with Leo Laprote on TWiT?

And yeah, I'm definitely aware of Jobs contradicting earlier statements he's made regarding "impossible" products (like how he stated they would never make a phone because of the stifling environment created by the major telecom carriers).

Thing is though, these aren't smaller concessions like video ipods or ebooks. Changing the fundamental hardware requires the participation of basically every major developmental arm of Apple. And Jobs didn't dismiss the smaller iPad in an offhand manner; according to this article, he was pretty emphatic in his denial:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/10/18/steve_jobs_squashes_rumors_of_smaller_7_inch_ipad.html

There's no question that Apple feels the pressure from larger Android phones selling well (4"+ is pretty much a standard now... I can't even remember the last Android phone to release smaller than that), and the smaller, cheaper Kindle Fire was the first Android tablet to actually have significant sales. I do agree that it's entirely plausible Jobs had a hand in changing his previously-adamant views on hardware changes, but the timing of all the events is what piqued my interest.

Jobs died Oct of last year and, knowing the incredible leverage Apple holds over their supply chain, it's entirely conceivable that the company moved forward on something that Jobs himself felt strongly against. Apple already had their new ipad release event earlier this year, and it's curious that a smaller ipad is also being rumored when their usual MO is one major release per product per year.

This could all be a moot point if there is no such thing as a smaller ipad, but if the WSJ's sources are on point (about a larger screen being manufactured for the iphone) then I think it gives a bit more credence to the usual wild Apple rumors.

It's a tough call, but I don't doubt Cook & Co. have some cool shit in the pipeline.

I had the galaxy nexus earlier this year and it almost won me over. That's not a good thing for apple. Google is really getting at them in the mobile space and the iPhone is definitely due for a revamp. The UI is getting a bit long in the tooth.

That TV may turn a few heads, but unless they get buy-in from the content providers, it's gonna be a big ass apple tv. They had to climb the same mountain on the music front so if anyone can get it done they may have the best shot.

They were just awarded a patent for a Head mounted display type product, so I expect to see something in the pipeline there in a few years...

it's really a toss up, but this battle with the goog is exciting.

something about how he "solved TV."

The talk out there is of an actual Apple branded television set, but it's hard to see what additional utility customers could get out there from the Apple ecosystem. Integration with the various products, sure, but that already exists with Airplay and Apple TV. I don't see consumers being as enthusiastic for paying Apple's brand premium for an already-high-priced consumer product that doesn't offer too much more than the tv's next to it in the store.

I was thinking it could be something content driven (say, something similar to the Netflix service), but that doesn't seem like Apple's MO either.

But yeah, outside of the patent shit, I'm really intrigued by this tech war unfolding before us.

To me, that's the only way they can really push the envelope. If they can bring about an Ŕ la carte type situation to the tv, it may bring about a seismic type shift to the TV industry. Comcast, AT&T and the other cable operators will instantly have to rethink their strategy. I know it may be wishful thinking, but i'd welcome this. Just give me an internet pipe and i'm good. FOH with your bullshit ass triple play. Let me pick the channels I want to watch, control it with Siri, stream music from my computer, play a game or two for a reasonable monthly charge and i'm straight..

Every new TV, and many old ones via PS3, etc., is web-enabled nowadays. The UI's are clunky, but I don't see how it doesn't come to pass in a few short years that virtually every tv network makes available their content over the web on an alacarte basis, in a reasonable facsimile of the current experience. If they don't do this, they have completely discarded the market of those who have a web-enabled TV but no cable service (a growing number). There may be strategic factors for the networks that prevent them wanting to go down this road, really not sure about that part of it.

The UI has been in need of a revamp for a couple of years now. And I was hoping that iOS 6 would bring that revolution with it, but it's still the same old thing. Some of these releases seem more like simple upgrades as opposed to major OS releases.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

Pretty much. That "buy-in" that apple facilitates is strong man. Had I not been so heavily invested in the apple ecosystem and the nexus had a better battery life + retina display, i'd have been all in. There are still a few quirks to android, but it's getting harder to ignore the disparity between OS's.

Jobs said a lot of things that he eventually came back on.
Also, if analysts are to be believed the next iPhone was the last big project Jobs worked on before he died.

It's a tad disturbing how emotional and full of hyperbole that guy is whenever the subject comes up.

Like, this guy acts like the Steve Jobs book never came out, and wasn't authorized by Steve himself- in fact, the book was REQUESTED to be written by Jobs, and somehow whenever any of his psychotic tendencies get brought up, this lunatic responds with childish shit like "HE ALSO EATS BABIES!!!".

In fairness to him, he's not the only psychotic Apple fanboy out there- all the Apple zealots trot out the same "geez, did Jobs fuck your wife or something?" rhetoric. It's as if his antics, methods, and overall personality wasn't brutal and heavy handed and downright shady going all the way back to Atari, and not a single shred of his life has been well documented. It's wierd how these guys come riding to his defense with defelctions and complete ignorance of the wealth of documentation out there on the guy.

I mean, calling his a PSYCHOPATH is totally NOT hyperbolic - in fact - it's PATRIOTIC!!!!!

.....ok. Nobody is saying this. You're just a zealot. That requires no brainwashing, merely simple, blind allegiance.

>I need to get an android phone, a colonic, and SEE THE LIGHT!!

I dunno what this has to do with anything. Nobody is telling you to get an android, or to hate apple products, or to hate Jobs. That's literally not happening. You're just flat out defensive on the subject in a rather disturbing way.

I've never seen a single rebuttal that had an ounce of actual thought. You don't even defend them, you just deflect criticism and argue with the scarecrows in your head.

Thanks for the performance though, I just knew I could count on you for a melodramatic appearance.

If you don't see that then there is no hope for you. (Unless you were Steve Job's psychiatrist - or have access to his medical records.)

Now, Calling Steve jobs an asshole? Sure.He was a businessman (assholes) - a computer geek (assholes) and a owned a UNIX computer company (the worst type of assholes.)

In his personal life he sure seemed like an asshole too.

But the armchair psychiatry here is sickening. When he said things like "No one would want to watch video on a 2 inch screen" he wasn't lying - he was wrong. Then he changed his mind - or let other folks in the company who offered a different point of view implement a plan he was against initially. And then sometimes he took credit for it - like an asshole. (And like every person in management I've ever worked for.)

This makes him a pyschopath?

People (like NoPayne) *hate* Steve Jobs because they think he's SMUG - in the same way people hate Al Gore, or John Kerry.

LOL!!! BWUAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

Look at you, jousting imaginary windmills an shit.

You cited something that clearly wasn't an example of him exhibiting psychotic behavior as the basis for your argument in defense of him not being psychotic. You then said "This makes him a psychopath?"?, as though it was an example I myself cited.

In other words, you're arguing with yourself.

You created an argument that I never made and provided an easy response to said argument and presented it as though it was a response to something I said- and did so with a straight face.

Thanks again for a brilliant display of stupidity that would deeply shame every teacher you've ever had if they'd seen it, because they've so clearly failed with you.

Without all that other diversionary bullshit, like this wierd "USA!" mantra you've picked up on (like... really... where the fuck is that even coming from?).

I mean, rather than offer up a well thought out rebuttal, or form an actual opinion with a solid foundation, you do this nonsense again. Your previous argument was an argument with yourself, and when that gets pointed out, it's "WELL I GUESS HE'S A PSYCHOPATH THEN!!!!!".

So... are you just covering for your absolute lack of debating ability, or are you really this petulant (look it up if you have difficulty grasping the meaning of that word)?

Can you articulate a reasonable thought for once, calmly, rationally explaining an actual stance, without all the theatrics? Is that possible? Do you know how to discuss this topic without coming across as deeply offended on a personal level?

Or are you really this childish, petty, and incapable? You communicate with all the eloquence and clarity of a mentally retarded 5 year old trying to eat a candy bar through the glass of a vending machine.

all the 'leaks' i saw had the new iPhone the same size except the screen is enlarged. The excessive black space on both ends now seen on the 4/4S is reduced as well as the home button's size.

it is also thinner as well if i remember correctly (but not crazy noticeable)

From what I gathered, it's not gonna be THAT much bigger, just big enough.

You guys need the screen size, seriously. I try to go from my 3.9 inch screen to an iPhone once in awhile and that extra bit is a killer for me, retina resolution and all. If you like your iOS, you'll love the screen upgrade - trust

But.. if it lures you to the dark side that is Android... I for welcome you with open arms.. muwahahaha.. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *cues thunder storm effects*

If it's like the guy above said and it's not actually bigger than the iPhone phsyically, just a bigger screen? I'm fine with that. Otherwise, I'll be looking around.

I don't know of any smaller Android phones that run stock Android (if I did go Android, it'd have to be stock. Def don't want Samsung determining when I get my OS update).

Hopefully by the time the next iPhone drops there will be a new, 4S sized Nexus (hopefully made by HTC and not Samsung, too).

... is worth using the unproven and app-dry OS? I'm assuming you're waiting for Win8 and not the dead-in-the-water Win7.

I went from a 3.7" Droid Incredible to a 4.65" Galaxy Nexus and this is definitely the ideal size for me (I'm 5'11"). There was obviously an adjustment period but once I got used to it, I could never go smaller... even in my pocket the Nexus is fine. I still use my ipod touch for the car and it's still such a jarring transition to go to something so small.

My wife (with an iphone 4) prefers using my phone when watching videos on the go and it makes viewing desktop-version websites so much more feasible. On top of that with Android you have access to various launchers that lets you change your homescreen grid to customized sizes up to 7x7 (I think).

Unless you've got really tiny hands, there are really minimal drawbacks to a larger screen size. There's a reason why the iphone is going bigger and why you no longer see flagship Android phones going any smaller than 4.3" (and it looks like ~4.6" is becoming the new standard).

I wear dress pants often and the iPhone already is noticeable and somewhat annoying in those. I can't imagine what a Galaxy Nexus would be like.

How comfortable the phone is in my pockets is honestly a bigger concern than the app store for me since it'll be in my pocket pretty much 24/7.

I'm on contract til 2013, so it won't matter until then. As long as WinMo8 has Instagram and Eye-Fi support by then I'd be fine with switching. I'd be downgrading in terms of apps if I moved away from iOS regardless. Of course, that's assuming Nokia is still making sleek smartphones by then.

In response to Reply # 0

I think TV has got to be what Apple is going to be focusing on next but surely its not going to be about Apple producing the best displays.

It is likely going to be some new form of deciding what to watch.

i think asking Siri what is on TV and then Siri (or something similar) learning your preferences and helping you formulate listings for the future. Isn't TiVos features a bit like this? We all know a huge amount of the channels and shows on TV are never watched so why bother with these subscriptions? Just focus on what you as an individual enjoy watching.

Its also likely to be very social, a bit like Spotify so you can get recommendations and see what friends are watching etc...

The mini iPad and the larger iPhone were following strong market trends, not creating them.

And as underwhelming as Siri eventually became, that was the last real major move we've seen the company make.

If Jobs really had a road map (and if he really "figured out TV"), then something more should have materialized.

The fingerprint sensor is nice, and the 5c/s will sell like bonkers regardless, but it's not exactly moving the needle either.

Granted, it's still early. Going along with Apple's MO the past few years though, I'm guessing there's going to be another announce event in Oct or Nov. I'm curious to see what gets refreshed there.

But until then... he's holding down the fort, but not advancing the line.

So, meh.

"Meh" isn't a condemnation of Tim Cook, just an assessment of what's happened thus far... ie, unimpressive. Average. Holding the front. And this isn't exactly a novel analysis either:

Apple's reputation for innovation is now its greatest liability

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-09/11/apples-innovation

"If the market's immediate reaction is any indication -- and in the era of high-speed trading, it usually is -- the iPhone 5C and 5S unveiled today still don't go far enough. As the new phones were unveiled and tech writers cooed, investors reacted with a collective "meh".

And I agree that it's still too early to determine just exactly how Tim Cook will be assessed by history. But it's been almost two years now since Steve Jobs passed away, and it wasn't like his passing was sudden either. We're well into The Tim Cook Era now, and that era started before Jobs passed.

Ted Gee Seal is right... Apple's brand is so strong that many feel they can do no wrong (not like they did with this event, but that shiny "Apple Magic" has lost its luster) and because of that any minor bit of "criticism" is taken as an affront. It's not. It's assessing a company on their own merits, just like everyone does with every company. (And as I'm typing this, it was announced that four big analysts just downgraded the stock).

And you know what? I take it back... you're right. RDF is still in effect, just not in the same context as when it was originally coined. Before, it was Jobs convincing people that some product or feature was greater than it actually was.... now, it's the blue-blooded Apple fans convincing themselves that things aren't as average as they actually are.

As long as Apple has those die hard fans who don't care because they're brand blind the companies I switch between for my electronics products will work harder for my dollar, and I'll go where the products suit me best and give me more choice in how I live my digital life rather than dictating narrow terms.

It's a beautiful time to be a non Apple consumer, and the people on this board who can't help by troll you make it all the better for me.

Interesting take on The Tim Cook Era from Vox...

http://www.vox.com/2014/5/28/5759330/tim-cook-is-turning-apple-into-a-normal-company

Steve Jobs never would have bought Beats. Here's why Tim Cook did it.
Updated by Timothy B. Lee on May 28, 2014, 8:10 p.m. ET

Apple's $3 billion acquisition of Beats isn't just the Cupertino company's largest acquisition ever, it's the biggest deal by a huge margin. The previous record-holder was the $400 million purchase of NeXT computer in 1996. That deal didn't just bring Steve Jobs back to the company he founded, it also provided Apple with the technical foundations for both Mac OS X and iOS.

Apple was already a big company when Jobs took the reins in 1997, but he ran it as if it were a small, founder-owned startup. All significant decisions flowed through Jobs personally. The Beats acquisition is the latest sign that Tim Cook is backing away from that approach. Under Cook, Apple is becoming a normal company much less focused — and, therefore, much less dependent — on the decisions of any one man.

During the aughts, Apple functioned to a remarkable degree as an extension of Jobs himself. When Jobs returned to Apple, he was ruthless about canceling what he viewed as extraneous products. He pared the company's offerings down to a handful whose development he could oversee personally and took an intense interest in the products that survived his axe. Thanks to his perfectionism, the iMac, iPod, MacBook, iPhone, and iPad became some of the most beautiful and popular gadgets ever devised.

Jobs was equally ruthless behind the scenes. Any function that could distract from Apple's core mission of creating great consumer devices was shut down. Jobs shuttered Apple's corporate philanthropy programs in 1997, arguing that the struggling company needed to focus on returning to profitability. Apple became spectacularly profitable, but Jobs never re-started Apple's philanthropic arm.

Jobs took an unusually hands-on role in Apple's corporate acquisitions. Late in Jobs's tenure, Apple only had one executive whose sole function was mergers and acquisitions because (according to Fortune) "Steve Jobs basically ran M&A for Apple." The result: Apple did relatively few deals, and all of them were small deals by Silicon Valley standards. Jobs wasn't interested in acquiring profitable subsidiaries, he was only interested in buying companies that could help him improve Apple's core products.

Jobs also stubbornly refused to return Apple's growing cash horde to shareholders, wanting to keep all the cash for himself in case he should need it for future investments.

Tim Cook thinks different

When Steve Jobs died, his longtime deputy Tim Cook took over. And he has taken a very different approach.

One of Cook's first moves after taking the reins was to bring corporate philanthropy back to Apple with a matching gifts program. Cook expanded Apple's dealmaking department so that Apple can now "work on three deals simultaneously." Apple started paying dividends to shareholders.

And now, Tim Cook is doing something Steve Jobs never did: expanding Apple by acquiring a company that is already successful instead of trying to build all of its new products from scratch. Rather than folding Beats into Apple, it will operate as an independent Apple subsidiary.

Cook seems to have realized that Apple's highly centralized corporate structure only worked with a talent as extraordinary as Steve Jobs at its apex. And Cook evidently believes that he is not such a talent. So he's turning Apple into a normal company, the kind that depends on collaboration among groups of talented executives instead of trying to impose a single vision on the whole organization.

For example, a big motivation for the Beats deal seems to have been to recruit Beats co-founder and legendary music mogul Jimmy Iovine. Cook realizes that he won't be able to single-handedly produce all the smart ideas needed to keep Apple growing. So he wants executives like Iovine at his side to help.

This is probably what Jobs would have wanted. Jobs specifically told Cook that he shouldn't ask what would Jobs do in managing Apple after Jobs was gone. Jobs realized that his successor would need to find his own model for making Apple a success. And that's what Cook is trying to do.

Bringing in guys like Iovine. If Beats Music becomes what Spotify should be, I'd jump in a heartbeat. After all this time, Spotify's radio algorithm is absolute crap, and I only really maintain my sub for my wife. 97.5% of my music listening nowadays is on Soundcloud, but if Beats can combine the two services (songs on demand + quality discovery) while leveraging Apple's reach, this would be major.

What's also notable is that Beats Music is an understated way for Apple to penetrate Android's ecosystem.... without paying Android any lip service whatsoever. This could be BIG. iTunes for Android has been rumored for a while as a Spotify competitor, but now it looks like Beats is that play. And it's a brilliant play, because it just brought "Jimmy" and "Dre" into the fold. It will take some work, but the pieces are there to make Beats Music a major force.

Well played, Tim Cook.

http://www.vox.com/2014/5/29/5760262/beats-cofounder-jimmy-iovine-is-just-what-apple-needed

Beats cofounder Jimmy Iovine is just what Apple needed
Updated by Nilay Patel on May 29, 2014, 9:00 a.m. ET @reckless

You'd be laughing like Eddy Cue if you just hired Jimmy Iovine

Nilay Patel

Why did Apple spend $3 billion to buy Beats? If Beats co-founder (and legendary record producer) Jimmy Iovine is to be believed, it's to save the entire music industry.

"It's a simple problem," Iovine told the crowd at the Code Conference in Los Angeles, where he took the stage with Apple's Eddy Cue. "The album is going away." An entire generation of music listeners is growing up without understanding the pacing and feel of music, which is what the human curators of the Beats streaming service hope to solve with custom playlists. "You have to have the feel of one song leading into the other."

"MOST TECH COMPANIES ARE CULTURALLY INEPT."

There might be a simpler reason, though: Iovine and his fellow co-founder Dr. Dre are exactly the kind of passionate, fiery advocates for the connection of art and technology that Apple's lacked since Steve Jobs died in 2011. Iovine at his best is a captivating, emotional figure, and he repeatedly emphasized the message that artists and human curators need to be on equal footing with the recommendation engines and personalization algorithms favored by most music services. "Most tech companies are culturally inept," he said. "The record industry is technically inept."

And the gap between northern and southern California is growing as streaming services teach consumers to expect an endless supply of music and movies instantly on demand. "People will pay for service. They'll pay for an experience," said Iovine. "They're not going to pay for access." That means media companies have to find new ways of delivering content to consumers, but innovation has been slow as cultures clash. "A lot of what happens is that Silicon Valley looks at what Hollywood does and they think it's easy," said Cue. "They don't appreciate the artistic achievements because they do it so well." Cue added that media companies have taken advances in tech for granted. "There's been a lack of appreciation for the work that each side does."

"THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IS DESPERATELY INSECURE, BUT THE GUYS IN SILICON VALLEY SEEM A LITTLE OVERCONFIDENT."

Iovine summed it up more bluntly. "The entertainment industry is desperately insecure, but the guys in Silicon Valley seem a little overconfident."

Apple, of course, managed to successfully bridge the gap between music and tech once before with the iPod and iTunes — the beginnings of a massive ecosystem that now encompasses movies, TV shows, and the iPhone's App Store. But Apple's star has faded in recent years as the world waits for the company's first major post-Jobs product, all while other services like Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix have reinvented media consumption. $3 billion isn't a lot if Apple can gain a big chunk of cool by hiring Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine and giving them offices and money and freedom to try and change the music industry for a second time.

Cue rejected that interpretation, although not quite as strongly as you'd expect. "I don't think you can buy cool," said Cue. "You make the best products in the world and customers love them. I think Beats is really cool, and people love them." Iovine said he'd been working with Apple for a decade, and it was his idea to finally sell. "How do you go from dating for 10 years to getting married? It just happens," he said.

"WE DON'T THINK ABOUT COMPETITION."

There's still a lot of work to be done, of course — Beats Music has just 250,000 subscribers in the US compared to Spotify's 10 million worldwide, but Iovine brushed those concerns aside. "We don't think about competition. I'm talking about the creative process," he said. "A lot of what I see in consumer electronics is that you copy what somebody successful did, and that goes against everything the creative process is. It's embarrassing to copy." Of course, that didn't stop him from taking a small shot at his competitor. "Spotify is a good service and great people, but they need to push for curation as well," he said. "We're in America. Spotify should have 10 million people in America, not worldwide."

These are the sorts of snap judgments and strong opinions that have been missing from Apple's public presence since Jobs died. Apple has one of the strongest and deepest executive benches in any industry, but the company has seemed guarded and cautious for the past several year, with perfectly-rehearsed messaging standing in for Jobs' raw emotional genius. Products like the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air are terrific, but thinner shapes and bigger screens aren't magic — they're just what we all expect now. They're the formula. The algorithm.

Iovine and Dre bring the promise of surprise back to Apple — the promise of real people who bring the strength of their real experiences to new kinds of products. "Dre and I come from similar backgrounds," said Iovine. "We shared something; it wasn't music. It was the dream of music changing our lives."

"I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO WORK FOR THEM. WE GOT LUCKY."

It's not clear whether consumers really are dying for human beings to program their streaming music playlists for them — Spotify is doing fine, and most teenagers are getting their music from YouTube anyway. But tech companies have long starved for human connection; for an understanding of emotion. Jobs loved to declare that Apple stood at the intersection of the liberal arts and technology; that his company alone understood it was making art with every new smartphone. Other companies might have chafed at the bravado, but it created an unmistakable aura around Apple.

"I've always wanted to work for them," said Iovine, describing his decade-long courtship of Apple. "We got lucky."

It might be the other way around.

thinking different... yes.

Jobs would keep iterating those terrible buds and "earpods" until they came up with something that a majority of people would like. That didn't happen and as an Apple fanboy that has used ALL of the buds they still haven't gotten it right. Probably never will so they made a choice.

Apple should bought Bower & Wilkens or Hardon/Kardon IMHO. Beats are ok but not what I would call the best quality. I haven't owned a Beats product since the very first in-ear red and black joints. I did listen to a coworkers Beats studio with the noise cancelling... not bad at all.

is now considered "thinking different" for Apple.

But buying Bower or Harmon would never have happened. The Beats *brand* is what Apple was paying for, not their headphones. It's no secret that Beats headphones are inferior (relative to price) to audio/technophiles, but that hasn't stopped the company from owning 59% of the $100+ headphone market in a fairly short amount of time. And I'm sure the margins on what are supposedly $14-to-make headphones are pretty attractive as well.

people keep bringing him up as if he actually does anything outside of brokering deals with rappers
maybe he's more of a mastermind then i know re: the design/tech of beats
but he seemed as much a figurehead as dre
it's like hyping up a george foreman hire because he sold a lot of grills or something
anybody know why ppl are so excited about him beyond his skill of wheeling and dealing (which i think apple could do themselves)

So he is surrounding himself with visionaries of their industry. I'm intrigued to see what Iovine and Dre can do to shake up the culture at Apple. I think the idea is to bridge the gap between entertainment and technology. People are also sleeping on the hire of Angela Ahrendts as well.

and yeah, is indicative of the direction that Apple is going. Cook is a logistics guy, so he's bringing in other people to fill the "culture" gap that he clearly lacks.

I'd imagine possible future albums like Beyonce's most recent which were recorded secretly and then when they are ready to release the new artists album a huge amount of publicity with exclusive access to Beats streaming and iTunes download. Perhaps anything Dre and his stable work on could be exclusives to both Beats and iTunes????

Kind of a shitty way to do so, but that's right in Apple's wheelhouse.

Apple pushing music labels to kill free Spotify streaming ahead of Beats relaunch

Aggressive tactics from the music giant have garnered scrutiny from the Department of Justice

By Micah Singleton on May 4, 2015 08:01 am Email @MicahSingleton

The Department of Justice is looking closely into Apple’s business practices in relation to its upcoming music streaming service, according to multiple sources. The Verge has learned that Apple has been pushing major music labels to force streaming services like Spotify to abandon their free tiers, which will dramatically reduce the competition for Apple’s upcoming offering. DOJ officials have already interviewed high-ranking music industry executives about Apple’s business habits.

"ALL THE WAY UP TO TIM COOK, THESE GUYS ARE CUTTHROAT."

Apple has been using its considerable power in the music industry to stop the music labels from renewing Spotify’s license to stream music through its free tier. Spotify currently has 60 million listeners, but only 15 million of them are paid users. Getting the music labels to kill the freemium tiers from Spotify and others could put Apple in prime position to grab a large swath of new users when it launches its own streaming service, which is widely expected to feature a considerable amount of exclusive content. "All the way up to Tim Cook, these guys are cutthroat," one music industry source said.

Sources also indicated that Apple offered to pay YouTube’s music licensing fee to Universal Music Group if the label stopped allowing its songs on YouTube. Apple is seemingly trying to clear a path before its streaming service launches, which is expected to debut at WWDC in June. If Apple convinces the labels to stop licensing freemium services from Spotify and YouTube, it could take out a significant portion of business from its two largest music competitors.

Apple has an antitrust monitor on its campus, courtesy of the DOJ after Apple was found guilty in an ebook antitrust case last year (Apple is appealing the decision), but it's not clear if that monitor is involved in this latest situation. The DOJ isn’t the only entity looking into Apple’s dealings with the music industry, either. According to the New York Post, Apple is being probed by the European Union’s Competition Commission to find out if the company is working with the labels to rid the industry of freemium services.

93. "Apple Stock Splits 7-for-1, Opens at $92 With All-Time High Just Over $1..."
In response to Reply # 0

This morning, Apple's stock underwent a 7-for-1 split, awarding 6 additional shares to each shareholder of record at 5PM PDT on Friday. Simultaneously, the price of the stock has been divided by 7 and should open around $92 after closing on Friday at $645.

Apple's all-time high stock price, reached in September 2012, is $705 or $100.72 post-split.

Apple's stock has split on three previous occasions, on a 2-for-1 basis, in 1987, 2000 and 2005. Apple has said that it wanted to make its stock "more accessible" to a wider variety of customers, but Apple could also be aiming for inclusion in the Dow Jones Industrial Average index. The Dow is price-weighted, meaning Apple's previous stock price of nearly $700 would have resulted in an significant reweighting of the index and a $92 would put it in the right price range for inclusion.

As the most valuable publicly traded company in the world, with a market cap of more than $550 billion, Apple could be a logical addition for the index. It would join a number of other high-tech companies listed including Cisco, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, AT&T and Verizon.

Apple went public on December 12, 1980 for $22 per share. Accounting for its four stock splits, Apple's stock cost roughly $0.39286 per share at IPO, giving a return of roughly 23,400% over 33.5 years

96. "Now THIS could be big... Apple and IBM in big enterprise partnership"
In response to Reply # 0

http://online.wsj.com/articles/apple-ibm-in-deal-to-create-apps-sell-phones-1405456933?mod=yahoo_hs

Enemies of the early personal-computer wars, Apple Inc. AAPL -1.17% and International Business Machines Corp. said they will cooperate in the mobile era, striking an agreement to create simple-to-use business apps and sell iPhones and iPads to Big Blue's corporate customers.

The deal underscores Apple's push to expand the iPhone's and iPad's reach into the business world—beyond their traditional base among consumers—while IBM IBM -0.72% looks to move more of its business software onto the mobile devices increasingly used by employees.

A partnership between the two companies would have been unthinkable 30 years ago when Apple famously attacked IBM in an iconic commercial entitled "1984," painting IBM as a big-brother-like figure protecting the status quo while Apple's Macintosh provided a pathway to freedom.

But the two companies have evolved since those days. While Apple still produces Mac computers, its main products are its mobile devices. IBM sold its personal-computer business to Lenovo Group in 2005, repositioning the company as a software and computer-services provider.

"In '84, we were competitors. In 2014, I don't think you can find two more complementary companies," said Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook in a joint interview with IBM CEO Virginia Rometty. "This is a really landmark deal."

The two companies said they hope to tap into the expertise of IBM's consultants and relationships with corporate customers to create business apps that offer the simplicity—a hallmark of Apple products—of today's consumer apps. The apps will draw on IBM's computing services such as security, device management and big-data analytics. Under the agreement, IBM's employees will provide on-site support and service of Apple products inside companies.

"This is just the beginning," said Ms. Rometty, citing a statistic that most smartphones inside companies are used only for email and calendar. She said the companies hope to exploit untapped potential to create new, serious business applications.

The companies said Apple and IBM engineers are developing more than 100 apps for various industries. The first batch of apps is expected to be available in the fall when Apple releases the next version of its mobile software, iOS 8.

Historically, Apple has made little effort to sell to businesses. Under Mr. Cook, Apple has started to find success in selling to corporate tech managers. While Apple has made progress in selling to the enterprise, IBM has deeper ties in that world.

"Apple is not an enterprise company, but that's not their DNA. It is IBM's DNA and IBM has had those relationships forever," said Gartner analyst Van Baker. "It's an unlikely combination but a very strong one if they can pull it off."

Mr. Cook and Ms. Rometty declined to comment on the financial terms.
