"Is it time for FPS to be revamped again?"

Past few days I've put back in MW3 after months off and remembered why I stopped playing in the first place. It's all gone stale and have turned back into the same thing again that they've tried to separate themselves from.

While I enjoy Halo I do because its just that, its Halo. It's a space shooter set in a sci-fi theme and I expect that. There is no way a tactical shooter should feel like that. The thing that turned us to the older style Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six was because there seemed to be a bit more thinking to it. It wasn't just run around like crazy and shoot everything in sight.

They really need to work on separation of the two again because this is ridiculous. Now its a huge camp fest with noob tubing that you would expect and almost be fine with in other games. It's frustrating to the point where I almost feel like I'm done with this genre of games until there's a heavy overhaul done.

But on a whim I popped MW2 back in the PS3 and quit after a couple matches. There was a lot of bullshit and chaos going on. Airstrikes up almost nonstop. Hacked lobbies and other bullshit. Playing in pure mode seems to cut down on the bs.

You shouldn't be able to take 20 bullets, survive with a sliver of life, and then be perfectly fine ten seconds later.

Guns should be able to switch from auto, to semi, to auto like they do in real life. In general I am not a fan of 'realistic' shooters that don't behave realistically...as fun as it can be it's odd to have a game like Modern Warfare where you are basically a demi-god jumping out of buildings at 50mph able to have helicopters instantly teleport in to rain down death. Like, Halo is more realistic then COD nowadays, lol.

'SMARTER' play should be rewarded equally with reflexes & aim. In the olden days you could have Quake AND Rainbow Six....now it's basically just Quake. Because of the hyperspeed & power ups available in what passes for military shooters nowadays it's usually the team that plays with a miniscule amount of teamwork that wins.

A few of us used to play RB6 and RB6: black arrow
it was on the OG xbox but that shit almost demanded you work as a team

even when the first Vegas was out we had our group and our spots we'd lock down. trying to do that now is like pulling teeth.

When I wanna play a shooter where its really fast pace and involves a bunch of running around I want to be able to play that

When I want to play a shooter where its a lil slower and realistic and it doesn't take 20 bullets to kill one man I want to be able to play that too

Its too mushed together now with no real separation of the two

up on the d-pad will turn it from single shot to burst shot
seeing the enemy first is 70% of the battle
squad play is a core gameplay element (one of the worst parts is that as a beginner you get FUCKED UP)
there's vehicles which generally required organized defenses to stop

I mean I could go on. the only thing it's missing according to your description is one hit kills and a lifebar that doesn't regen. basically everything else you described is the reason why I play Battlefield and not Modern Warfare.

and to be honest prefer it to CoD

there is still something that feels missing though

huge ass maps and its more objective based and requires more teamwork skills which I love

I'm gonna nit pick a bit and say some maps are too big and the jets need to be controlled more like Ace Combat and start you off with more than just a machine gun making it almost impossible to kill other air vehicles with lol but that's really minor shit and BF3 is the closest thing we have to realistic these days

I think what I'm trying to say is that these games now have made people want to be lone wolf than team player. Often its the style of the game that develops the players and gets them into that mind set. We need something to come along now to force people into adapting a whole different play style.

both of those NECESSITATE team play via their game mechanic. I never understand why other franchises are so slow to pick up on some of the innovations they've created. is it THAT HARD to properly balance different classes?

and yeah, Battlefield isn't perfect, but it's much better than CoD imo

I only copped it to play the DayZ mod, but the vanilla MP is pretty good. Much slower paced than usual, though if you're not into the whole ultra-realism thing then it might not be up your way.

it would take a one of the big boys to make the changes. Right now Activision is printing money with a release every year. They will not slow down that schedule to reinvent the FPS. so maybe next gen.

If you stay in the back of the map laying on your stomach with a sniper rifle 50 miles away from the scrum for the entire game, the United States Airforce will come and drop an actual bomb on your house.

Until that is brought into effect, I wil continue to gripe.

the classes in MW3 and to an extent BF3 are more just palette swaps.

this is why i love TF2.
the classes are segmented as fuck.
and you can still be #1 as an engi or a medic.

the only class that requires finesse, luck and a huge amount of skill is the spy. but you know what? that's completely fine to not have a spy on your team.

and it promotes actual teamwork.

you know i been playing 2fort for the past 5 years and it's still a different game each time?

I miss games like Quake 4 Arena and Unreal Tournament. Deathmatch in those games was great. I'm personally not into all the World War themed games and objective based multiplayer. There seems to be an over saturation of that kind of FPS gaming at the moment. I just want to run around, picking up awesome weapons in cool environments and try to get the most kills in a given session. Bring back simple, back to basics gameplay please.

FPS has been for the birds since Goldeneye/Perfect Dark

I like the campaigns but I haven't been compelled to play any of the FPS that have come out since the original Modern Warfare. That game had a great campaign and the multiplayer was fun for a couple of months, but ultimately respawn is not a very compelling game model unless you're playing live split-screen with friends, which is increasingly rare these days.

All I want is a game dedicated to tactical squad play with live-chat and dead-chat, 8 on 8 action. I'm still amazed at how much SOCOM III screwed up the formula (it was fun for a moment, but I wasn't ever logging the sort of six hour sessions I'd put into S2, especially not for two or so years) and how little Confrontation and S4 did to right the ship.

So just give me SOCOM II HD, and all those other shooters can keep doing what they want, I guess. They lost me a long time ago.
