"new Windows phone (Lumia 900)... Yay or Nay?"

Thinking about getting this as a present for someone and maybe myself as a backup if its a solid phone. Generally are they horrible phones? Reviews seems to be positive so far for it

First of all, let me be clear.

If you are already invested in a ton of iPhone/Android apps, you need to realize that there are only about 70000 apps on the Windows Phone marketplace. So you might find yourself in a situation where one or two particular critical apps you use on the iPhone/Android don't have an equivalent on the Lumia.

Most of them are there, but there are some missing, like "InstaPaper" or "Draw Something" or "Instagram" etc.

Having said that, the honest truth is that the Lumia, as a total package, takes a royal shit on the iPhone and any Android device. I've used them all. This is the slickest, fastest and best designed phone on the market today. I say that both from a hardware perspective and from an OS perspective.

The other phones have better hardware specs though. For example, the iPhone4S has an amazing camera. The Lumia, not so much.

It's also nowhere near as customizable as Android devices are.

But give it a week and you'll love the thing.

I have the Cyan Lumia and I covet it.

PS...the social integration on the thing is best of breed. If you like to keep up to date with twitter, facebook, email in a seamless way...this is the phone for you. It's all built in and done really slick.

I have a first gen WP7 phone (LG Quantum) that has been upgraded to Mango, and I love it. Mango runs very well even on this older hardware, so my reasons for upgrading to the Lumia at this moment don't trump the possibilities that are on the horizon with WP8. I suspect that Nokia will be coming out with the best WP8 phones though, so I'm almost 100% certain my next phone will be a Nokia.

I seriously love the design of that Nokia, but since I came from WebOS (which I STILL say kicks Android, IOS and WinMobile's ass) to Android, I really don't feel like learning a brand new OS again. I know it's a far cry from WinMo 6, but I still don't believe M$ can come up with a mobile OS that I'll want to deal with.

Now, if that 900 ran Android, I'd kick this Evo Shift to the curb and deal with the virtual keyboard (I need a physical keyboard, but they are going the way of the dino, and the Shift has a SERIOUS memory leak that I'm not going to deal with past my upgrade period

Not even so much the apps differential that scares me away from WinPhone, but the limits such as the SD card issue, not as customizable as Android and the 800 x 400 resolution. Given some tweaks WP would be the one platform that would pry me from Android, and while I like what I seen playing with the Lumia 800 I'd wait out to see how much nicer WP8 does.

The integration of shit is very lovely though. And with it being a Nokia I imagine the camera is pretty damn dope. Priced at $99 it's probably worth checking out.

Upgrading from Nokia N8, I am excited, I havent ever been disappointed by Nokia. I know SymbianOS was doomed in the US, so hopefully Windows can draw some developers. I guess time will tell, but for $100, I figure its as good a time to try something new.

WM7.5 looks so different than all the other UIs, and it's more functional to me.

The price is right, you know Nokia is excellent on the hardware side, and the OS works well. What's not to like?

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

Its a physical button, and not on the screen, so it feels funny in landscape mode, also the lack of landscape mode for some apps and the homescreen is strange, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/10/nokia-makes-lumia-900-free-to-all-att-customers/

Now through April 21st, any AT&T customer who purchases a Lumia 900 will receive a $100 rebate from Nokia -- effectively making the device free. Ostensibly a gesture of goodwill from the Finnish manufacturer, which confirmed that a small number of early handsets shipped with faulty software that caused memory management issues and eventually data connectivity woes. It insists this problem is now fixed, and that come April 16th, all affected consumers may swap their device at any AT&T store or merely download the update. Previously, AT&T had announced a $100 mail-in rebate for new subscribers that'd purchased the Lumia 900, but thanks to Nokia, it's now effectively free for all. You might wanna jump on this one.

you should only get this phone if you can do without certain apps you're used to on iOS or Android.

It'll take time before the app store has as many apps as that.

Such beautiful hardware, but the OS makes it completely, totally, utterly, out of the question.

This phone makes me hope Nokia survives long enough to switch to Android, like they should have done in the first place.

I'm sure a lot of people think the OS is great. But I'm confident those people will eventually change their minds.

I say this as someone who steadfastly defended the Palm Pre despite its hardware problems. It's annoying having half of a phone, and it's not something I want to do again anytime soon.

The hardware is there it seems, and the software while not quite up there with Android or iOS in capability just yet.. it's not nearly as bad as the Palm Pre's hardware crappyness. Given it's proving to be more capable then the likes of Blackberry and positioning itself as the 3rd most capable mobile OS while having a lovely minimalist design that can lure in a heavy crowd, it's really just up to the next version to address the very-huge-bullshitty-slutty-crappy-shitshittybang-bang limits that limits this thing e.g. resolution (lulz @ 800 x 480 resolution on a 4+ inch screen), multi-core, SD storage.

But WP8 tho? Should be a good show worthy of some Orville Redenbacher popcorn with a touch of butter, pepper & garlic powder. Will still be fighting an uphill battle against the likes of Android Jellybean & Krimpet along with iPhone 5, but M$ actually bodying the likes of RIM's remaining chunk of market share should be a good consolation prize in the end of the day (and SHOULD be a bigger target in their campaign since M$ is already friendly with corporate heads all over)

It's a good phone.

Had a 800 for the past 3 months. I love it.

I think that remains to be seen.

HP thought they needed a left-field player, but it didn't work out too well for them.

I left blackberry and iphone because I loved the idea of the customizaztion abilities of Android but I am kind of over it now.

I just want a phone that works well at the things I want it to do. I want a phone I can hand to my girl or my mother and they can operate it.

I want it to handle outlook exchange like a pro.

Who gives a ish about a 50 million product app store when 95% of said apps 90% of the people have no interest in.

My Droid 3 takes 8 clicks to do anything. I am ready for a change. I was ready to head back to blackberry but I think I want to give winmo a spin.

...and as complicated as Android can be, I found one can REALLY dumb it down to being a phone that "just works" so even my "WTF THIS BUTTON DO?!" moms can do phone calls right from the lock screen itself.

The complicated nature of Android is grossly overplayed IMO.

Will this phone receive Apollo?

I need a phone to recommend to users who aren't into iphones and scared of Android OEMs' release schedule. Is this the one?

This phone is $100 on ATT. This phone's done exceptionally well in the states.

and the Galaxy Nexus is probably still the best Android phone on the market right now, about 5 months after its release.

The Razr/Razr Maxx just got 4.0, and the Galaxy S II is slated to get it real soon too... this may be a good time to get into Android honestly.

very nice phone. i was impressed by the way it felt in my hand. the windows mobile interface was smooth and polished. i really liked the camera button and quality of the images taken by the camera. unfortunately they didn't have data set up, so i couldn't test the web browser or connection speed. also i don't think att has lte where i'm at, which sucks.

lol @ best buy, their sign said nokia lumina 900 and it was hidden on the backside of an aisle. trying to make people associate it with old shitty chevys.

still steamed that Elop ditched maemo/meego/meltemi/etc to put all it's eggs in the Windows phone basket. The hardware form factor of that is even slicker than the lumia's and pretty much birthed it.

After using the N9 swipe interface on more or less the same hardware footprint (despite the larger size of the 900) I don't want to use a phone with buttons again, and it's really a shame Nokia hamstrung it. Presumably Nokia are gonna port aspects of that interface to the future windows phones even though they are all but through with Meego.

oh and anyone flirting with picking up the Lumia 900/800, they announced this week that there will be no upgrade path from Windows 7 to 8 later this fall, if that sort of thing matters to you.

i mean it was basically free after I got that credit for buying those first phones with the network software problem.

I definitely would recommend windows phone. I'm however going to wait for the WinMo 8 handsets before I buy another.
