the 360 and PS3 exclusives are pretty close, but i personally would lean to favoring the PS3 because i never got into Halo or GoW.

From the games mentioned I don't think ps3 has a clear lead on exclusives at all. Pretty even.

LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
PixelJunk Eden

Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 3
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (Pick any of the three, they shit on the 3 franchises XBOX has).

Yakuza 3
Yakuza 4 (this series is not my cup of joe, but otherwise universally liked from what I've seen)

Can't lie, I don't like super-scary games lol. I don't like feeling constantly on edge.

REALLY fucking impressed how different a playthrough of this game can turn out, and how the A.I. fucks with you and communicates with each other.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qguDnY0C_Sg&feature=plcp

This very well might be one of my favorite games ever and I haven't even played it yet. I suppose I should reserve judgement, especially since the Uncharted games were always great until their third acts fell off horribly, but so far this game is looking like some real next level shit.

I just reserved my copy today. I was on the fence because honestly, I was planning on GTAV being my last game played ever and was content to not playing anything else in the interim. All those positive reviews along with the youtube clips I saw of the demo swayed me. I wonder if GTAV will top this game at all now.

I think in terms of what they cover, where they go and what positions they hold in the community, Jeff Gerstmann and Andy McNamara are probably the Siskel and Ebert of video games. Sessler was just one of the very first people to be talking about games, consistently, on TV for a living, and he's consistently held a strong market share in the video game videos arena as a result.

Its been interesting reading all the reviews. Polygon gave it 7.5 but you could tell its just not her type of game. Everything she mentioned as a negative is exactly why you play a game like this.

Then there are reviews like at wired...

"The Last of Us is an impeccably well-made game, but while it puts on the appearance of breaking the mold with what would appear to be unorthodox characters and gameplay, it actually takes great pains to never introduce anything into the design that might turn away the millions of gamers who won’t play anything that doesn’t have at least ten different types of gun."

Not really sure what more they want? I didn't get the impression that this game was about guns at all. What more can a developer introduce? its a game driven but a story.

Uncharted is just a poor experience buoyed by great characters and set design seven years later. Uncharted 2 is a crazy thrill ride with a TERRIBLE conclusion and some of the most annoying enemy types I've ever encountered (and that's BEFORE the final act).

Uncharted 3 was the first time they got the whole thing right since the Jak series, and even THEN the enemies are mostly bullshit near the end-game, but at least I beat the game on Normal (and am even replaying it on Hard and having a relative blast).

My big worry is, if the spectacle is removed from the Uncharted games, you've got a sluggish Gears game with bullet sponge enemies and that's no fun at all.

I was amped as hell going off that first reveal trailer, but after finally playing the three Uncharted games this past spring (just finished 3 this weekend), sure I whizzed through all of them in 1-2 days but they were incredibly frustrating marathons aside from Drake's Deception. Now I'm not entirely positive they'll make a game that's good enough to keep up with what I anticipate to be a much slower burn story-wise in Last of Us.

Never played the first uncharted but 2 and 3 were great shooters, adventure, and puzzler all wrapped up into one.
Even on the hardest difficulty if you shoot an emeny in the head they go down, unless they are wearing heavy armor which some of them do. Naturally a guy wearing head to toe kevlar is gonna be harder to drop then a guy that isnt.

and I get this isn't how games are made, but my natural instinct is always to go for the center mass as if it were real life. In Uncharted, where every enemy is a bullet sponge and I'm only hitting 35% on head shots, that's a real buzz kill. In Uncharted 3, half my kills were run-and-gun / melee kills just because I wanted to use guns as little as possible.

Oh we'll
The only question is do I go to work Friday or not lol

The opening is def on par with Uncharted 2 but both games are so different in terms of tone that it feels weird comparing them. This is a legitimately depressing game (so far anyway).

Three weeks ago before this game was on my radar, I was fully planning on GTAV being my last video game purchase ever. Now I'm as antsy as a little kid on the night before Christmas. Beyond being upset I have to work, I'm a little irate I have to run some errands after work before I get home. I hope I have the discipline to get out the house on Saturday and get my hair cut after I sink my teeth into this game tonight.

so i put it in the shop for $100 thinking i'm have it back in 2 weeks
to tide myself over for those 2 weeks i just went and bought a new xbox
thinking i'd get my PS3 back eventually.....
they couldn't fix it
so i wasn't bout to buy a new ps3 after spending $400+ on a new xbox set up
that's my L for being hype tho
should have just waited to hear back from the bol before copping the xbox
been regretting that decision ever since
hopefully this comes out on ps4

When the game auto saves it glitches up and makes it to where it no longer auto saves and you can't manually save it.

There was a patch and it may be the culprit for this glitch

I hope this gets fixed soon. An hour went down the drain for me.

Disable your Internet on the ps3 so your auto and manual saves will work.

Also for those that haven't installed it yet it'll prevent the patch causing this glitch until they can fix it.

and I won't spoil too much, but last night I reached a portion of the game that is slightly Resident Evil-ish in terms of the ambiance. When I saw what was going down, I cut the game off and turned right to the NBA Finals. My house was a bit too dark for me to go down that road.

And I'm certain I'm going to have to re-play this game simply because I missing all the safe/safe combinations since I'm running and gunning for the most part.

I'm leaning more towards a 8.5 or a 9.0

Don't get me wrong, love this game. As a horror movie fan this is exactly what I'd want in an infection movie. However I feel like this may be a tad TOO stealthy... And I fuckin love Metal Gear.

I don't want a CoD style shooter and I even chalk up the clunky gun control as some real world shit because everyone isn't a marksman. Maybe it's the enemy placement that does it for me. Some sections are downright frustrating although challenging.

Feels like an escort mission made into a game. Sometimes the A.I. seems retarded because the other characters are damn near bumping into the enemies but they can't detect them. Then again this may be a good thing because normally the person you're escorting fucks things up and gets you killed.

About halfway through so I'll see how I feel towards the end. Dunno if its nit picking or not but I don't think a 9.0 is bad at all. Just dunno if I feel like its a perfect 10. Still love it though.

O gave it a real shot

don't like being on rails

the enemy AI(perhaps my fault, I was playing on normal) is not very good.

it's not as good as half-life's ai at the default setting.

I kill a guy, other soldiers find his body, they're alert for a sec, then they basically go back to their samepatterns so I cna kill them

the SUPER IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING told a story that was just a rehash of five other stories with no new twists whatsoever (I didn't get very far, basically after the point where you find out whatshername will not be making the entire trip with you and you go to meet whatshisname for a ride)

my joe everyman character bests trained soldiers in ultra realistic hand to hand combat because I mashed the square button.

this happens a lot.

oh yeah, and because the game wants ammo to be rare, most of those soldiers ALTHOUGH CARRYING GUNS don't drop ammo.

there is no story explanation for their lack of resources, just that the game wants me to not have bullets.

etc.

I don't like this type of game

hopefully they can devise a way so you can control your partners to make them either attack full out of sit back in cover and not move at all; what way if they are discovered by enemies, it will be your fault and not the fault of the AI moving about randomly.

10 on ambition, sure. They told a great story. But the video game felt way too much like a video game alongside it, at least on Normal (and, being a Naughty Dog game, I'm out on Hard). There were some fun little set pieces but for the most part they made the most fun part of the game, the stealth, also the weakest part of the game. It's also hard to get over the admittedly high expectations set by the original gameplay demos, which much like Bioshock Infinite displayed a far more cinematically interactive experience than we ended up with.

Also, and this isn't a knock on the game so much as a note: this game shows off just how BADLY developers like Naught Dog need the PS4, like, yesterday. So many of the environments were hard to look at coming off of Uncharted 3 a few weeks ago, likely due to how many environments there were (and also how dark most of the game is) but it was still extremely noticeable. Particularly the scene of all the giraffes walking.

Im digging it so far. I do hate the AI issue tho with the NPCs not being noticed but i can forgive that as I can see the went the extra mile on so many other things. but then again I like things like level design and the subtle things in games. yes the story has elements that have been seen before but its a zombie world type game. I think thats a little to be expected. If you are of a certain age, most if not all stories are gonna be similar to something else you've seen before.

Baring any huge fuck ups, of course. I imagine I'm in the last 1/4th of the game but I'm not really sure. The again, that isn't saying too much. Not a lot has come out this year other than Bioshock and Tomb Raider (and I've not played the later).

It reminds me a lot of Deux Ex: HR in that it seems to want you to use a lot of stealth, but still lets you get by without it if you don't suck at video games. I'm playing on normal though; maybe I'd have to be more stealthy if I was playing at a higher difficulty level.

It also reminds me of Resident Evil 2 with the occasional "puzzle", scarcity of ammo, and enemies who worry me just by hearing the sounds they make.

I'm REALLY interested to see what the multiplayer is like but I'll wait until I finish the main game.

Oh, and I also like how the game seems to have an overarching theme so far. I'll be interested to see how they end it.

Now I'm near the hospital, in particular I just came up to the tunnel near the hospital. I was actually thinking I was a new minutes away from the game ending cut scene since escaping from the cannibal guys was so drawn out, but I guess not.

Spoiler for those that didn't play the game to completion yet, but if the PS4 weren't coming out so soon, I could see a DLC for this game consisting of Ellie surviving before she ran in the the Fireflies and Joel, since that part of the game was glossed over.

As bitchmade as this will sound, I was on edge while playing as Elie, in particular the parts after you escape from the head cannibal guy. I think that's mainly because the game chose to turn off the accompanying music to add to the suspense.

i think Ellie was relatively safe before she linked up with Marlene.

she was in military school and living in the QZ or whatnot.

she only got bit because she snuck out with Riley.

i'd like to see her a few years down the line. late teens, early 20s. living in Jefferson City, still immune. still no cure.

maybe what's left of the Fireflies tries to track her down.

her section of the game was intense, though. i played it very stealth and use nail bombs and my bow a lot more than i did with Joel. anytime i tried to go head-up with dudes they'd smack me around, so wiping out a room of them on the slick was much more satisfying.

-I loved the gunplay. Loved it so much that I didn't bother with stealth too much and just slaughtered everybody. I played on Normal though; I think at a harder difficulty the way I played would have been impossible.
-The way you take some people out is straight up brutal, but I felt like everybody I killed had it coming to them. This was also the first game I think I've ever played where people who got killed or fucked up in cut scenes got it exactly the way I would have done it if I had control. Bunch of fucking assholes.
-One of the main themes of the game is survivor's guilt and I thought that was very well done.
-The ending was really, really good. Ike summed it up perfectly (although I'm hoping there's a sequel to this even if it means no new Uncharted for a while).
-The music was great. The sound in general was. I think it's the first game since UC3 where I rocked the headphones the whole time.
-Definitely my game of the year. Game of the generation was thrown out in a review but I don't know about that one. It's up there, though. Definitely top 10 of the generation. Maybe top 5, even. I'd have to think about it.

There are few video games that get me THIS invested in all the characters. In the beginning I was all about the cause. I wanted to get this girl there to save humanity. By the end I was so attached when I found out she had to die so others could live I really didn't want to go through with it. Was so happy to get her out of there.

Other things fucked me up too. Tess dying hurt, but when Sam got infected and turned the next morning and then his brother shot him and then himself I was completely fucked up.

That scene when you're escaping the science building at the university after he too that fall and he was blacking out. Yo, that was emotional as hell.

I opted to play very stealthy. I really only used the guns when there was no other option. Even then I choose the bow to silently snipe some moving enemies because I could collect the arrows after. So many tense moments. Other than a few issues with the gameplay I really dug the hell out of everything else. I'd be happy with a sequel but I'm satisfied if this is it.

Yeah when that happened, initially I was like, maybe he was like Ellie...and then he snapped in them morning....I was done when that scene went down...

>That scene when you're escaping the science building at the

That was insane! From that point on, the story took a huge twist when Ellie took over...

I rarely want to go through a game again...but i'm strongly considering it for this one...

ALL the black characters died? Damn, man, we can't even survive in 2033?

>wanted to get this girl there to save humanity. By the end I
>was so attached when I found out she had to die so others
>could live I really didn't want to go through with it. Was so
>happy to get her out of there.
>
>Other things fucked me up too. Tess dying hurt, but when Sam

>shot him and then himself I was completely fucked up.

Very fucked up. Tess dying didn't bother me as much. She went out like a G.

>That scene when you're escaping the science building at the
>university after he too that fall and he was blacking out. Yo,
>that was emotional as hell.

Holy shit, I thought he died. Especially when the next scene is you playing as Ellie.

>I opted to play very stealthy. I really only used the guns

I started using the bow when you played as Ellie and were running from that cannibal group. I didn't realize it was giving me one hit kills. In general I played stealthily as Ellie because her melee sucked.

how were yall affected emotionally by Tess' dying? The game's been marketed for a year as a journey of two people.

It starts with three.

Was I the only one who said "yeah., tess is going to die"

and was a bit disappointed that it was just like every zombie movie ever?

just, I guess.

Tess dying was expected.

So was Sarah's death.

People supposed to die in a zombie story.

It's not only that the deaths are expected, it's that we weren't acquainted with them long enough to really care for them. Which is fine. Their deaths were supposed to be more important to Joel (and Ellie in Tess' case) than us.

What moved me about The Last of Us was the reluctant bond between Joel and Ellie.

I wasn't as personally involved as I was with Lee and Clementine in The Walking Dead, which pulled my heart strings like no game before.

But I was left more unsettled by the end of the Last of Us, because there was a lot left unresolved with those two. The final scene is one of the maturest and most carefully handled endings in a video game. And probably THE most tasteful of any story involving zombies aside from maybe Zone One. I wouldn't be the first to draw comparisons to Cormac's The Road, but that shit is completely warranted.

545 according to the in game stats but I'm sure that's counting infected, too.

Slight spoiler but I also totally killed some unarmed people towards the end of the game because fuck them that's why.

in addition to wanting to see how far i can go without killing anybody, the black and white mode is some ill shit.

if they had nuts they would have just made the game in black and white from jump. would have been ill for a game with this sort of graphical fidelity to go full monochrome.

i played a couple rounds of the multiplayer. i probably won't play much (even though i played the fuck out of uncharted multi), but it's interesting. spawning with only 16 bullets in your assault rifle makes sure that nobody is running and gunning.

Anyone here beat the game on Hard or Survivor modes yet? When I beat the game on Normal, you get to see Elie pocketknife stashed on the dilapidated windowsill in the beginning of the game, what do you see when you beat the game on Hard or Survivor mode? I'm planning to start playing on Hard this week, but just curious what I get as a reward other than the trophy and the extra in-game currency to unlock more extras.

You know how you feel when someone that sucks at games tries to play at your house and you just want to scream at them? That's how I feel watching him play. Still funny though

That they make you download an installer but then it's not any faster of a process. At first I was excited they might be testing the ability to play a game while the backend of it keeps downloading. Or maybe it is? 27GB at about 2 hours seems a little faster...maybe.

but the main thing about that app was that it didn't double the disk space needed to install the game (only 27gb instead of 54).

I was SO frustrated whenever combat popped up again; this is something I've been feeling a lot in these later generation games that come loaded with character. Uncharted series, Bioshock series, this game. Of them all I'd say Infinite was the only game I was excited to get into a fight even if it meant waiting for some more atmosphere/story. Last of Us' combat isn't terrible, but it got incredibly janky towards the end.

Checkpoints were brutal, and in each of the last few set pieces I'd get loaded in with A.I. that was in either a constant mad scramble or all standing totally still, already pointing their guns at me. One checkpoint even had me spawning in the middle of a camp of dudes (that was hell to get out of) and another during the David fight hit right after the second stab (it looked like he was already dead, and then he cut my head off) that had him running around like one of those glitched Cougar Man videos from Red Dead Redemption. Carrying Ellie out of the hospital, I got lost running from the guards because I thought they'd be able to see me and shoot me and then realized they can't see you at all until you bump into them which is instant death (accompanied by the entire background flipping to blue screen). Compared to the other cinematic gameplay moments that was a bummer.

I will say the game got a lot more fun once the Bow was introduced and you had a steady arsenal of weapons (and godDAMN did I need 'em, I think I finished the game with like 15 bullets total...plus 100+ flamethrower), and once I got some of the rules of the Clickers vs. Runners down. But the first three to five hours of this game were dare I say average as hell...still, a part of me wonders what that half would feel like on a New Game + without all my weaknesses and confusion.

I need a break though. This game is mad exhausting. The only tears were for Sam and Henry, but like someone said up top this is the most honest ending to a game I've ever seen, and probably one of the most honest endings I've seen in any media for a while. It was very Sopranos-y. It's funny because right as I was climbing that last hill as Ellie, I was thinking to myself...man, for all my complaints, this really could be like like a fantastic 30 hour game, couldn't it (my playtime was 14:27:29)? Also interesting stat for me, I'm generally like 35-45% accurate in first person shooters, maybe around 40-50% in the Uncharted games...but I shot 75% in this game. That's a testament to their mechanics, IMO.

OH, also, this multiplayer makes me REALLY daydream about Naughty Dog making a ridiculous SOCOM experience now.

Great game. I dont know that I was ever this tied to the characters in any other video game. And as someone said here, its was exausting playing through it. So intense. Especially Ellie's part.

I was going to buy this at whim since I was a fan of the original game. Lo and behold, I am hit with the YLOD. Mainly due to the fact I don't love playing games that much these days, I think my video game playing days are over. Unless the games are top-notch these days, playing games feels like a chore to me as I get older.

The only unfortunate thing about the YLOD is that I have to go out and get another Blu-ray player now. I think I'll go out and cop one when True Detective drops on Blu-ray, which probably won't be until near the end of the year if I'm guessing/hoping.

I missed the photo booth.

I really liked it but don't think it was great. Most of the humor was a bit of a swing and miss for me, they definitely reminded me of the awkward sense of humor my sister and her friends had when they were 11-15, so kudos for that, but I mostly appreciated it just on those terms. I also felt like the girls were written a little too smartly at times, even for the harsh militarized world of the Last of Us I have to imagine 13 year olds wouldn't be so...eloquent? I don't know.

Between the long, long break and tight corridors/monster closets, I have to say I was not a fan of the combat scenarios either. I thought the main game had some revolutionary stuff and when some old friends were in town over Christmas I jumped back into a couple of the battle puzzles just to show off how intense it can get with just a little trouble. But between the scarcity of items, weapons and space (along with what seemed like some much more aware, not necessarily smarter, enemy AI) - couldn't you knife people from behind a corner before? - the last three scenarios got incredibly old fast. I started the game on Hard, switched to Normal for the second-to-last fight and Easy for the last one. I followed basically the same progression during the main game, though that was partially just because the urgency of the story didn't match how often I was dying and because A.I. on checkpoint respawns appeared horribly broken to me.

Every Naughty Dog game - except Uncharted 3, which I beat on Normal and then went back and beat on Hard with relative ease - has that problem for me, something unique to their games. At some point, the story is so good and the combat scenarios are so hellish I can't help but hop in the bulldozer and plow through.

That said, even though Winter was when most(all?) of the combat took place, I was really happy to see that it was in there. I found the tension of wandering through that mall during the first hour incredible, partly because I was playing with some stellar headphones in and also just because of the surprise they'd decided to fill in some holes between Joel getting hurt and their arrival at the cabin.

Contrary to the pre-release hype this is NOT DLC that is intended purely for fans of the Last of Us' storytelling, there are only four or five combat scenarios but three of them are among the most difficult I've encountered in a game in a long time, not just the Last of Us. But I think it does a good job satisfying both Last of Us camps, those who are here for the narrative and those that are here for the mechanics. Neither are quite up to the quality of the main game for a variety of reasons that mostly come down to scope, I think - they put a lot of big ideas into a very small package, literally and figuratively - but the effort deserves to be attached to a PS3 masterpiece.

watched it last night and it's a pretty damn good documentary, takes you through all the phases of the game (most of the time is spent on casting the lead roles and the inception of the game, obviously, but there's a good 20-30 minutes on game design and sound design as well).

I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in making big budget, narrative-driven games like this in general, not just Naughty Dog. I haven't seen Area 5's other documentaries but if they keep making these gaming-centric documentaries for a while we might finally have some really good behind the scenes stuff on our hands.

on PS+.

I haven't played Last of Us since that summer other than one play of the bookstore section to show it off to some out of town friends over Christmas and then the DLC in February.

This game and GTA V more than anything are the games I want this year. My interest in actual next gen stuff is basically the Batman game and that's it right now as far as what's actually on my radar heavy. If I could just get these two games at 60fps without the texture pop-in and jaggies, something Tomb Raider delivered on EXCELLENTLY on a much shorter timeframe, I'd be a made man.

I am playing the PS3 non re-mastered game.

I had a broken PS3 for a few years and missed out on all the last gen greats (Bioshock Infinite, GTA 5, etc etc) so I am finishing up what I missed. I think I got another 30 min to an hour of game play left but I just wanted to say playing this game has been an experience.

Because now that I'm back into gaming, this game seems like
a landmark event for the genre, whether you like it or not,
it's clearly an important game

I'm thinking about copping myself

Took me a try or two to really get into it; at its core it's a survival horror game.

After awhile though you kind of see it's genius; I don't think ive ever played a game has been as concerned with characterization and story so strong(usually it's one or the other even in the best games).

This game is masterfully done. Please make sure you do the following while playing.

- Play with a 5.1 speaker system or some good over the ear noise cancelling headphones. Turn the lights off. Noise is and lack of noise is actually used in a smart way in this game. You can hear people's footsteps and breathing if they are trying sneak up on you or hide. The monsters sound creepy as fuck.

- Play it on the hardest setting you can right from the jump. You can lower the difficulty during the game if you get stuck and bring it back up once you are past a hard part. You still beat the game on the highest difficulty you selected however (good for trophies and gameplay)

- Search everywhere and craft often. Make sure you are full of crafted items at all times. You got limited room and you should maximize your parts.
