"Rock Band 2 post of hype"

11 days till this joint drops. I can't wait for this shit. $5 to import your Rock Band 1 disc songs into Rock Band 2? I'll gladly pay that. I've heard rumors of some Parliament making it to Rock Band 2 as downloadable content sometime. Sheeit

^ I think I was that rumor monger.

But I'm hella excited for RB2. The new drum set sounds like a huge improvement in durability and feel, and I'm glad they've added drum solo sections too.
Hopefully the stock samples won't be so cheez this time.

Also, for all those clamoring for some hip-hop, this week did see the release of some bullshit nerd-rap that you've never heard of. (Think Sage Francis, but worse.)

But, uh, at least it proves that if there's some guitar in the mix, they aren't totally resistant to putting it in.

i'm perfectly happy with my current guitars, but i have about $100 in gift cards that i'm hoping to drop on that limited edition Ion drum set. any news on when they are dropping that joint. i know the game comes out in less than two weeks, but i don't think even the regular instruments will drop till next month with the special edition.

i think the Ion drums can only be ordered direct which means i can't use any of my gift certs. i'll compare to the new drums and see whether the special Ion ones are worth the $300.

"September 4, 2008 - Today, MTV Games is set to release a title update for Rock Band. This required update allows users to import 55 tracks from the original game to the upcoming Rock Band 2 (shipping September 14). The update adds an Export Disc tab under the options in the Rock Band menu. The service is not free, however. Gamers who want to export the 55 tracks will need to pay 400 MSP ($5).

An online connection is required to export the tracks. All tracks from RB1 will be exportable with the exception of the following songs:

* "Paranoid" as made famous by Black Sabbath
* "Run to the Hills" as made famous by Iron Maiden
* "Enter Sandman" by Metallica

Harmonix didn't include information if the bonus tracks (all from Harmonix bands) would also be exportable.

Obviously, you won't be able to send these tracks to RB2 until the game is actually in your hands."

i wonder why the 3 tracks mentioned can't be exported. not that i care much about those tracks anyway. Harmonix are geniuses for including this export feature, even if it is 5 bucks, for RB2. damn i can't wait for the new game. plus i wanna see how the new drums are improved, i'm still eyeing the Ion joint too.

They dropped the commercial with the announcement for the 360 price cut. They got this shit running nonstop on Comedy Central, I've watched it like 10 times, no joke.

They have the ACDC song playing and it sounds FUN TO PLAY.

I had bought a 2nd guitar used from Gamestop and it started acting funky. I went back to gamestop and got another used one and it had the same problem. I went to their support website and requested a box to send it to them in. Got a brand new guitar after having sent them my used one from Gamestop.

remember that any usb microphone will work. they can be found used at game stores for pretty cheap. also, check for ps2 ones before the 360 and ps3 ones, cause they are usually cheaper.

Review:

http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/689300/Exclusive_ION_Rocker_Drum_Review.html

The difference between playing Rock Band 2 on the ION Drum Rocker and on the set that comes with the game is like the difference between driving a new M-Class Mercedes and a 1982 Honda Accord—both will get you from Point A to Point B, but the ride is truly magnificent in one, and lackluster in the other. Like any substantial upgrade, though luxury and performance don't come cheap.

While the guitar peripheral in music games is only slightly analogous in feel to playing an actual guitar, the drums are a different animal. When toy-drumming, you use many of the same motions you use when you actually drum, so the temptation is to ask how the ION stacks up to real drum kits. Perhaps not a fair question—while you can use the ION as a midi drum controller if you buy it a new "brain," its real purpose is videogames. While a videogame drum set will never take the pace of the wooden kit you keep in the garage, if you’re interested in a game peripheral as opposed to a musical instrument, the ION Drum Rocker is exceptional.

When it came out last year, Rock Band's drumming game provided the only truly new experience with the title. We’d all played Guitar Hero and various Karaoke games before, but the drums were something else. But, after our initial fascination with playing drums in Rock Band died down, we found that the drum peripheral that shipped with the game was disappointing—it’s very loud, it’s flimsy, and, worst of all, it tends to randomly not register drum hits—bad for scoring 100% or gold star status. (In fairness: We haven't played around enough with Rock Band 2's set to really compare it.) The ION solves all of these problems.

After an initial set-up that was surprisingly intuitive—if you’ve ever put together an IKEA bookcase, you’ll find the ION assembly a snap—we sat down to give the kit a test drive. The modular nature of the drumset allows you to customize your drums in any way you like, including stacking the ride cymbal to the left of the snare, like a real kit, and unlike Rock Band’s drums. It’s also sturdy; in fact, it’s all but unshakable and feels unbreakable if you set the thing up correctly.

Once it’s assembled, the first thing you’ll notice upon sitting down behind your ION is the three cymbals facing you. It’s a little daunting at first, but each cymbal corresponds to a pad, so if you want to ignore them and play with the standard four round pad set up of the original Drum peripheral, you won’t have a problem

Firing up Rock Band 2 for the first time and playing some songs is a revelation. You get the impression that you’re playing a real instrument as opposed to a plastic toy. It’s truly a different experience to play on the ION set than a Rock Band set. With the Rock Band traps, you either have to deal with the loud “click” of the stick hitting the drum or cover the head with felt, which gives your drumming a “dead” feeling. The ION heads take care of this problem with a spongy, sproingy head that mimics the feel of real drums. Your sticks rebound, but don't feel “bouncy.” Also, it registers every single time you hit your drum, including fast rolls, so you can’t blame your crappy score on the peripheral any more.

Banging a trap is quiet, so you’ll hear a lot less clicking and a lot more of what you’re “playing” coming through your speakers. This is a definite improvement—it forces you to listen to the game’s drums as opposed to your own clicks, and it especially great for other members of your band, who will be a lot less likely to be thrown off by a bad drummer’s rudimentary rhythm.

The steel reinforced pedal feels much more sturdy and responsive than the chintzy pedal from the original kit, although it’s still not counterweighted like a real kick pedal, so you won’t mistake it for the real thing. Sadly, the ION lacks a port for a second pedal, so no Van Halen style bass rolls for you.

As far as the cymbals go, we found that anyone who had played Rock Band before pretty much immediately abandoned the cymbals in favor of the tried-and-true set up from the first game. New players might be more inclined to use the ride cymbal for its intended purpose, of course. While the cymbals don’t “feel” much like the real deal, slamming the crash cymbal after a drum fill is an entirely satisfying and mandatory experience with the ION. We likey.

The constant Rock Band problem of the pedal sliding all over the floor is taken care of too. The ION’s pedal is heavy, and there are a couple screws sticking out of the bottom: Put it down on a carpet or a mat and the thing will stay put. Just watch the hardwood floors. The screws leave marks; trust us.

So if you’re serious about fake drum playing, and have $300 bucks sitting around, we highly recommend an ION kit to you. Whether it’s “worth it” or not depends on your financial situation of course, but the ION is, without a doubt, the best music game peripheral we have ever used, and perhaps the best video game peripheral we have ever tried. It’s that good.

For the perpective from a real rocker, check out Cockpit's Rachael Rine reviewing the kit. The ION Drum Rocker is available now.

Good questions, the ION "brain" is not available separately. Yet, anyway.

I think there are MODS out there for people can use for their own kick pad as well as use say a Roland kit, I think someone I spoke with said it was like $600 for the "Frankenstein" kit though.

So, yes, if you already on an Alesis E-Drum set you could use that brain.

But you could also just use that set for rock band, so if you did it like that, you've wasted $300.

Alternatively, you could just buy an Alesis drum module, which are already available.

See, the thing is, the module is so you can use the ION kit as a electronic drum kit WITHOUT the video game. he is asking if you can use any electronic kit with the game. The ION module is not standalone.

compared to the original drums, how are the new pads? actually this question may be better when the cymbals actually come out, but i guess if anyone has upgraded or had experience with both please chime in.

I've heard that they are in fact quieter, have better rebound, and can be triggered with a lighter touch.

I've also heard there have been some issues with pads triggering other pads, but that may have been a problem confined to using the RB2 set with RB1.

But no, I haven't played them myself.

one gripe i have is how when doing a setlist and you get a song with a female singer the lead singer doesn't switch and vice versa. so you end up with a male singer on screen with a female voice. uhh, that's kinda dumb.

In response to Reply # 105

i'm not talking about male and female human players, i'm talking about the game character. like when i'm playing guitar on solo tour and the computer character is singing, let's say he's male in this case, and the second song in the set is a garbage song, the computer vocalist stays the same so its still a male character, but theres a female voice. its just funny to me is all. i would have thought that maybe harmonix would have programmed in something where a second vocalist of the opposite sex would step on stage for these circumstances.

I think what you're talking about would conflict with the Stand Ins, which is what Rj's talking about.

If you were to set up your gender specific stand in and then the game kept wanting to switch in the correct gender vocalist maybe shit would get screwy?

Really they just need to make a second auxiliary vocalist character on stage that's always the opposite gender of the correct you place, so you people thinking too hard about the logistics of men singing "We Got the Beat" can rest easy.

They say they want to break the 1 year cycle on releases to focus on bringing a more robust Rock Band 3 probably in 2010 instead of just making minor tweaks and releasing a new joint this year. Sounds cool. Especially since they have so much DLC anyway.

i was pretty skeptical when guitar hero was first out, but once i tried it i was hooked. RB just took it to the next level and even at the 180 dollar price tag i can't think of a single game that has a better value for entertainment.

the ion is great. i didn't understand the console thing on it, i was just jammin at a party.

the GH WT one i was playing on was :\. the hi hat never seemed to register my hits properly. it wasn't just that i wasn't used to where it was located, i got that pretty quickly. it seemed to resonate and pick up double hits when i just hit it once.

Snoop Dogg Partners With MTV for Talk Show, New Album, “Rock Band”

Just hours after revealing that he has split from Interscope/Geffen, Snoop Dogg has mapped out his next conquest: A 360-like deal with MTV that includes a new album, television show and a Rock Band tie-in.

Snoop’s new album, Malice in Wonderland, the follow-up to last year’s Ego Trippin’, features “seemingly unlikely musical guests” and tracks produced by Dr. Dre and Pharrell. As part of his new MTV deal, a selection of songs from throughout his career will be added to Rock Band, marking the first time an overtly hip-hop artist has made the game’s rock-heavy track list.

The variety talk show, dubbed Dogg After Dark debuts Tuesday, February 17th. “Screw ya wigz on tight and tune in on Tuesday nights for the first step to the next level of Snoop D-O-double-G,” Snoop said in a joint statement with MTV. “Dogg After Dark is the only nightclub TV show hosted by you know who. So take a journey with me through the mind, body, soul and musical mind state of the most prolific, authentic game spitter. And tha shit is funny, so show me da money!” The show will run for seven weeks and feature the Snoopadelics as a house band. Of course, Snoop is no stranger to TV, having starred in both Father Hood and MTV’s DoggyFizzle Televizzle.

“As the world of entertainment keeps changing, we felt it was the right time to let Snoop Dogg back on MTV so we could continue to run thangs with music, movies, DVDs and bring hip-hop to Rock Band,” Snoop Dogg added in the third person. As many complain that a Live Nation and Ticketmaster merger would eliminate any competition, who would have thought MTV would appear out of nowhere as a possible music industry contender.

i just got a new bass pedal for $30 from best buy this week. i haven't had a functional drum kit since getting rock band 2.

i did all the drum beat training, and halfway through the fills. some of these are hard as hell! i have no idea how i made it through some of those beats at 100 bpm.

but yeah, invite me to play if you see me on, i'll play any part.

i already did the rb2 one a few weeks ago, it was much easier since i just did vocals. this one damn near killed me. i'm doing bass and vocals and most songs weren't so bad, until green grass and high tides. i don't know how i pulled it off but it took almost 3 hours of trying. now i'm home free, no song can be that hard. check my achievements in an hour or so. no one can see my rock band gamerscores.

She's like really wanting to be a musician because of this. So she asked for a real drum set for Christmas, so we looked around and talked to some people and got this fly drum set. Got her lessons lined up. Here comes little 9 year old Sheila E. To the garage she goes tho.

that's great just as long as you've already explained to her that playing the drums for real is not like the game. be a shame you put money out and she bails out in a month.

on the same note, i've really wanted to learn the guitar largely due to these games, but time is always the issue.
