IE 9 and 10 are very good

XP supports neither so upgrading the OS to at least 7 would be best

type "ping google.com"

if nothing returns then at least try pinging 8.8.8.8

also verify that your computer is getting a valid IP address with "ipconfig /all" (e.g. you're not getting 0.0.0.0 or an address that begins with 169.)

Just a wild guess but if your machine is getting a valid IP and u can't connect with any browser your host file may be bamboozled.. but I'll go on that assumption depending on what else you find..

Resetting the router doesn't hurt, but I doubt it will fix things when the rest of your connected devices don't have issues.

The fact alone that you reset your tcp/ip stack and it didn't fix anything makes an even stronger argument (it could also mean a bad nic)

You can access your router admin console and if it has the capability, release the IP in the dhcp pool from the workstation, reboot and allow the pc to get a new ip address from the router.

Going back to malware, download combofix on a usb thumb drive and run it

If it is malware this usually cleans it 99.9% of the time

Once done you can download and install malwarebytes as a supplement

1. Reset IE.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

If that doesn't work.

Check your IP configuration in network connections.

Get those setting as close to default as possible.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-tcp-ip-settings

click the advanced button and make sure you do permit all TCP/IP filtering.

Delete whatever your network is from the preferred wireless network list and reconnect manually
Also, on most modems you also have to hold down the reset button for 10 seconds and let go
After that, if it doesn't work, I would contact your service provider
But maybe try another device in the house to see if something else will connect
If so, then its a computer issue and you have to take it to an actual computer tech

*poof*

In response to Reply # 17

Any time updates fail it cranks out an error code

Need that to determine the actual problem

Make sure the WinUpdate service is running: Start>run>services.msc

9 times outta 10 updates don't run because windows is not activated (pirated copy), make sure your windows copy is legit

Still need that error code though, the windows update site will display it

If you can’t access the Windows Update website when you try to scan for Windows updates, try these solutions.

If you don’t have the latest Windows service pack

If you are running one of the following operating systems, make sure that you have the latest service pack installed. If you don't have the latest service pack installed, use one of the following links to install it.
Windows Server 2003: Install Service Pack 2 (SP2) here.
Windows XP: Install Service Pack 3 (SP3) here.
Windows 2000: Install Service Pack 4 (SP4) here.
If you already have the latest Windows service pack

Turn on Automatic Updates

You can do this automatically by clicking here. Or, to do this manually, follow these steps:
Exit all the programs that you have running.
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Automatic Updates tab, click Automatic (Recommended), and then click OK.
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type wuauclt /detectnow, and then press Enter.
After you turn on Automatic Updates, wait an hour, and then scan for updates again.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update Agent

Exit all programs that are running on your computer, and then download the latest Windows Update Agent here. Then, wait an hour and scan for updates again.

If these solutions do not resolve your problem, contact Microsoft Support.

when I "ran it" and it tried to "extract files"
it would stop at 100% - then a window would come up and say something
lie previous update not found in your system...
or something like update not compatible

like series of downloads of updates need tohappen before I try to install a service pack?
is it any sense to do that??

or do the service packs carry the actual downloads to prepare my comp for the service pack update?

ughhh

Did you buy the pc with an OEM copy of windows or did ya homie give you the hook up with a burned copy?

If it's a legit copy I would follow the MS kb article

Also like I said before service packs are cumulative so sp3 should be the only one you need to install then you can run security patches afterwards

To possibly fix the problem tho you can reset windows update components

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

The Fixit window will pop up just click "Run now"
