It would be foolish to think that this means the fight is a done deal, but if it does happen I can't imagine it being very entertaining. Alexander hasn't done anything exciting since the uppercut he landed on Urango three years ago.
When he fights offensively against anyone who can time him (Kotelnik, Matthysse) he gets hit a lot because he is so predictable and doesn't move his head when/after he throws. When he just waits and counters all night (Bradley, Maidana, Bailey) he uses his speed more effectively but he also stinks the entire place out.
I don't necessarily think he'd be a safer choice than Guerrero, but he's really one of the few top fighters who I just never enjoy watching fight, whether he's fighting offensively or defensively.
And considering he should probably be 2-3 in his last five fights I don't think he's really earned it either--convincing and boring wins over Maidana and Bailey are not any better than convincing and exciting wins over Aydin and Berto, and the decisions against Matthysse and especially Kotelnik were suspect.
