(surprised this doesn't exist yet. I KNOW Y'ALL SEENT THIS PICTURE.)
First of all, I wasn;t offended. Nor did I see any reason in the film itself TO be offended.
The film is good (a solid B), but only about 1/4 of that film (to avoid spoilers, the third quarter of it) is "Best Picture Oscar nomination worthy"
The rest plays out like one of those old-fashioned star vehicles made since the 1940s to give actors an opportunity to chew scenery. The writing, as I said before, is a bit deliberate and - not ironically for a Disney film I suppose - Disneyesque, at some points dripping into Miller-Boyett sitcom levels of syrup.
Viola Davis and Emma Stone were great, and Allison Janney's character had a nice turn that made her look like more of a person than a caricature (the rest of the white people in the entire picture come off like cartoon villains). But Octavia Spencer is the real standout - she dominates this picture and is wonderful to watch.
