44. "Actually, a lot of expoitation directors had highbrow tastes..." In response to In response to 42
Lucio Fulci for example was highbrow as fuck and you can actually kind of feel it in his early Giallo-movies but the audiences were more interested in zombies and eyeballs being poked out... Shit, even Jesse Franco seems to have been a bit highbrow even if his own movies were practically strictly smut and he even acknowledged that...
I have this theory that much of the charm and brilliant visuals and attention to details in anything but storylines and characters and pacing and you know, the type of stuff that USUALLY matters, LOL!, came from the appreciation for Bergman/Nyqvist and stuff like that...
Meanwhile, modern day horror/exploitation directors grew up watching other exploitation and what remains are just post-modern homages that are at best loving and at worst pure irony. I think Tarantino's RELATIVE love (at least in the sense that he's actually *watched* it as in Cassavetes, french new wave etc.) might be a reason his work gets more acclaim...
Not to go too off-topic though, I don't think I have much to add to your actual point, you are obviously right... it was just my instinctual reaction to reading the interview and the general "tone"...
