Prince isn't terribly "sophisticated" (tm) and even his most "sophisticated" music sounds sophisticated more because it contains *indicators* of sophistication than actually being sophisticated. And that's not even meant as a diss because I dig 3-chord 60's garage-rock where the definition of sophistication might have been to actually have a bridge in a tune... Still, some Prince stans make him out to be some kind of Mozart and I don't think that should be necessary in order to "validate" someone. Besides, Bo Diddley will always be cooler than Mozart anyway so why bother propping up "your" artist as some kind of genius when there's genius in simplicity and writing/producing/performing a song like "When doves cry" too? Prince doesn't *need* to be a great jazz-artist and based on the Madhouse records, he's not. Sure, they are better than the worst music-school fusion but at the end of it ultimately barely more happening than your average Candy Dulfer-album where she plays some "funky" sax over "grooves"-Sonny Rollins it's not but was that the intention?
And on that note, I kind of agree with revolution; while it's not said outright, there are overtones of "I know jazz better than Prince" and while I'm 100% sure that is the case, nothing I've heard from Leeds on either Prince or Madhouse or Sheila E. makes him to be some "super-jazzer", more a jazzy R&B saxophonist. Whatever, maybe dude is Coltrane and Sam Rivers combined and was never allowed to showcase it but nothing I've heard indicate that...
