It was solid and enjoyable. However, I didn’t learn anything new or earth shattering. And while the doc mentioned Shabazz Palaces, they skimmed over Ish’s Cherrywine era and his unreleased album, Ish is Coming. I feel like there was a big gap in covering their creative pursuits between the post Blowout Comb era and the beginning of Shabazz Palaces. And did Cee Knowledge & The Cosmic Funk Orchestra even get a mention? What about Ladybug’s Trip The Light Fantastic?
I went to the bathroom so maybe I missed it?
I also think it would have been nice for them to flesh out how the hip-hop community reacted to their music. I could have sworn ATCQ threw some shade back then but I could be completely wrong. I vaguely remember reading something about that years ago but it could have been speculation. I have a Internet acquaintance that once referred to Ish as a “poor man’s Q-Tip” (in a positive way) and Ish even said he was heavily influenced by Tip, that he was trying to sound like him early on...
I was too young to really understand their music when it came out. I remember digging “Rebirth of Slick” as a little girl, but I didn’t get into their music for real for real until my early teens.
