the trump administration had to prop them up as a boogeyman to get them noticed by americans at large. despite them existing here for 4 decades.
but they are a basic gang with connections to central america. murder, drugs, sex trafficking, etc. they really rose up in cali back in the day to protect themselves from other gangs on the streets and in prison.
like i mentioned above...most of their activity is taking place in the immigrant communities they are a part of (illegal immigrants are hesitant to cooperate with law enforcement).
a lot of this is the result of the reagan and bush1 policies in el salvador and honduras. it isnt really a failure of our immigration system as much as it is another failure of our foreign policy that pushes some of the worst elements from chaotic violent failed states (which we helped to create) into other countries.
