"English major and other literary folks. A question."

I am on hello talk studying Portuguese. One of my language partners asked me "Whenever and when. What is the difference and when should I use those words."

I explained as best I could. Something to the effect of "when" is more specific and "whenever" is more vague. I ddidn't know how to explain right and it still wasn't clear to them.

Any of y'all wanna crack at it?
