I worked for an agency that handled GM business, then GM went bankrupt and I lost my job in 2010.
From there, it was a hard row trying to get a solid ad gig because the market was so saturated and there were like 5 people applying for all the same jobs.
Luckily, two things happened:
1.) I started working on a project for Obamacare and that pitch brought me a shit load of money and exposure (thanks, Obama!). It was also the thing that let me know just how expensive health insurance was gonna get and so I buckled down on the freelance gigs and started looking for full time.
2.) The stimulus expanded Medicaid and Unemployment benefits in such a way that, while I wasn't working, my family still qualified for assistance that kept us afloat for five or six months when we might've been totally out of the game.
But now, I'm four years in on the same gig, making significantly more than I expected to be at this point and I attribute some of it to the policies of the past eight years and some of it to just how shit is.
