Wild but not surprising....
The crazy part is Boomerang kept its "blackness" but still managed to not be tied to lazy stereotypes that fell neatly into tropes....Some movies are just so fucking effortlessly hilarious (Trading Places, Coming To America) that they go beyond whatever tag you put on them...Them shits work EVERY WHERE...
But other movies are a bit more nuanced and requires you to go beyond the same ol' characterizations....Boomerang, Life and Bowfinger all deserved better....I remember the critics being lukewarm to those movies. But some folks like Roger Ebert understood what Murphy was trying to achieve.....
Hell, I think he deserved an Oscar nod for Bowfinger. That was some in-the-zone shit happening on screen....
