Wisdom that a wise man attempts to impart always sounds like foolishness to someone else. Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom. One can find it, live it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it. (c) Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
that said, I still think it is important to give a good lecture to your kids. I try to not make it personal or attacking, as that can defeat the purpose, but I am also extremely blunt at times and do not try to shroud anything I need to say.
I remember lectures my parents gave me -- whether I followed them or not, they helped me understand my parents' ethical beliefs and shaped how I think of them. my kids should know what I think of the world as well, even if they disagree. if your kids are fucking up or potentially fucking up in a major way, although you cannot stop them, you should let them know where you stand. I'm not going to give my silent approval of an impactful, terrible decision.
here's one last quote for parents:
When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. (c) Mark Twain --------
