I'm just pointing out the relative conditions at Musk's companies, and the fact that he's still able to hire people based on their own naive excitement about the mission, excitement that tends to wear down quickly.
But entry-level workers at SpaceX are paid half of what they'd be paid for similar work at Facebook. And those entry-level workers (many of them with PhD education) don't usually stick around long enough to get past the bottom rung. SpaceX has one of the highest burnout rates in the tech world, and that appears to be by design.
I was surprised to learn from this article that I currently make more money *in academia* than my colleagues who went to SpaceX. And they have to pay rent in southern California.
