he's got a couple things going for him
1. He's (half-)black 2. His dad is black American--affiliated with a black music legend at that--and regardless of the degree of his father's presence and influence in his upbringing, he gets to construct a "he spent summers in Memphis" narrative--which IS a pretty flimsy explanation, but it's enough to get him over 3. Despite his rap voice, he represents Toronto HARD in his music. He raps like he's from the southern United States but he doesn't pretend to be... Iggy never explicitly pretends to be from ATL either but like somebody said above, she doesn't claim roots *anywhere*. I've always said that "rapper without a country" thing has been her Achilles heel. In hip-hop you gotta represent where you're from, even if you hate where you're from
(on that note... did Tupac really represent anywhere? Yeah, he rode for the West Coast when they were at war with the East. But beyond that, was his place of origin a huge part of his identity? I think he was a very special case)
