The same lines can mean totally different things depending on the actor's/director's interpretation and intention. It almost felt like JEJ's objective in the scene was to 'impart a valuable life lesson on his son' while Denzel's was simply 'make him feel dumb for even asking'.
You can tell by the delivery of each actor when they said, 'You better stop worrying about people liking you and just make sure they do right by you'. To me, that was the most important line in the whole scene. James made sure that if nothin' else stayed with his son, that line would. Denzel gave it to him on some, "Don't come 'round here wit that dumb shit no mo". Neither interpretation was wrong, but they definitely gave the scene different flavors and energies.
