he said that he'd had the idea for this film in his head for about 20 years and that he felt the animated format would better represent what he wanted to get across in the film...that it could convey a dream state better than trying to use special effects with live actors...and it also just makes it more believeable

he also didn't like the idea of simply creating it as an animation...he wanted the actors and their body language and their expressions to use as a jumping off point...
