or at least ones with loyal fanbases don't need to be signed to a major label in order to be succesful and make a living off of music.
I'll admit the model works better for hip-hop artist: sign a distribution deal to a small to mid size distributor, get a bigger vut of the pie, sell anywhere between 40,000 to 200,000 CDs (for someone like Ice Cube) to your core audience, make the rest of your money off of touring and merchandise.
I'd imagine fans of Radiohead and NIN want a little more, but again, those artists have larger fan-bases and they can make even more money off of touring and selling merch directly. Hey, it could work.
